Cardinal DiNardo Urges Support for Law Preventing Federal Funding of Abortion

Law would apply Hyde amendment policy to all federal fundsWould protect health care providers from retaliation for not assisting with abortions

WASHINGTON—Cardinal Daniel N. DiNardo, chair of the U.S. bishops’ Committee on Pro-Life Activities, called on members of the House of Representatives to support the “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act” (H.R. 5939), introduced by Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) at the end of July. He called for support in an August 20 letter. The bill already has 166 co-sponsors including 20 Democratic members. The text of the letter can be found at www.usccb.org/prolife/DiNardo-HR5939.pdf “H.R. 5939 will write into permanent law a policy on which there has been strong popular and congressional agreement for over 35 years: The federal government should not use taxpayers’ money to support and promote elective abortion,” Cardinal DiNardo said. “Even public officials who take a ‘pro-choice’ stand on abortion, and courts that have insisted on the validity of a constitutional ‘right’ to abortion, have agreed that the government can validly use its funding power to encourage childbirth over abortion.” He said some people assume this position already is fully reflected in U.S. law, and noted, for example, that “some wrongly argued during the recent debate on health care reform that there was no need for restrictions on abortion funding in the new health legislation, because this matter had already been settled by the Hyde amendment.” However, he noted, the Hyde amendment, which precludes money for elective abortions and health plans that provide them, is only a rider to the annual Labor/Health and Human Services appropriations bill. It has been maintained essentially intact by Congress over the last 35 years, but it only governs funds appropriated under that particular act.

Federal funds are prevented now from funding abortion by riders to various other appropriations bills as well as by provisions incorporated into specific authorizing legislation for the Department of Defense, Children’s Health Insurance Program, foreign assistance, and so on. Gaps or loopholes in these protections have also been discovered at various times, requiring Congress to address them individually. Thus, “while Congress’s policy has been remarkably consistent for decades, implementation of that policy in practice has been piecemeal and sometimes sadly inadequate,” Cardinal DiNardo said.

H.R. 5939 would also codify the Hyde/Weldon amendment that has been part of the section containing the Hyde amendment in annual Labor/HHS appropriations bills since 2004. Hyde/Weldon has ensured that federal agencies and state and local governments that receive federal funds do not discriminate against health care providers because they do not perform or provide abortions. “It is long overdue for this policy, as well, to be given a more secure legislative status,’’ Cardinal DiNardo said. “No hospital, doctor or nurse should be forced to stop providing much-needed legitimate health care because they cannot in conscience participate in destroying a developing human life.” —

Apology Correction!

Tuesday, October 5th, 2010

We received a message on Friday asking us if we were sure that there had not been an apology for the Tuskegee Experiments so we did some research and found out that Bill Clinton did in fact offer an apology for the experiments. We’re sorry for the error.

Now if only an apology would be offered for the Negro Project which sterilized Black women and which, according to Rev. Johnny M. Hunter, “…has had lasting repercussions in the black community.” And today through Planned Parenthood, our government, through their support with our taxpayer dollars, continues to perpetrate atrocities against this country and particularly against the Black community. Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest provider of abortions, received hundreds of thousands of our tax dollars to help them kill our children, particularly Black children as is evident by the majority of PP facilities being in minority neighborhoods, their taking of donations specifically to kill Black babies, and the fact that, although Blacks make up only 12% of the population, they make up 33% of the abortions in this country.

When will America wake up to what’s going on in our country and around the world. This is a battle between good and evil. Everyone will choose a side. By remaining silent, as so many are doing, is in fact picking a side for as Edmund Burke said, “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” And to quote another great man, my Uncle Martin, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” Abortion is the greatest injustice of our time. With approximately 52 million confirmed murdered babies since the Roe v. Wade decision on January 22, 1973 and millions more unconfirmed through health complications due to abortions and contraception, the moral decline of our society is a true testament of our selfishness.

We need to turn away from sin and turn back to God, to our Creator. We must repent of our sins and ask for forgiveness. We must make God first in our lives, others second and think of ourselves last. We must become unselfish, loving, caring, people. We must care for the least among us, the child in the womb. Without life, all other rights don’t mean anything.

The Tide is Turning

Friday, October 1st, 2010

A while back, yours truly released an article entitled “The Church Can Turn The Tide.” Looking back, it becomes very apparent that it is GOD who turns the tide, and that as HIS Bride through Jesus our Lord and the Holy Spirit’s leadings, we are used in this process. At any rate, the tide is turning. There are several news articles of date, including the buzz regarding Alice Walker’s daughter, Bishop Eddie Long and so many other things that let us know that people are coming forth with issues that have heretofore been “hidden.” The time now is more for prayer, crying out to GOD that as in the book of Jude, many will be rescued. Let us pray that as the sins of this nation are exposed, we will all obey the mandate in the book of Chronicles, and humble ourselves and pray and turn from our wicked ways, and really be GOD’s people, so that GOD will truly heal our land! GOD bless you today dear friends!
