Priests for Life Welcomes Bishops’ Statement on Assisted Suicide

Washington, DC – Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, welcomed today the statement that the United States Catholic Bishops approved this week regarding assisted suicide.

“As the bishops have pointed out, proposals to legalize physician-assisted suicide ‘generally leave in place the laws against assisting most people to commit suicide, but they define a class of people whose suicides may be facilitated rather than prevented.’ Put another way, this is just the latest form of prejudice and discrimination in our society,” Father Pavone pointed out. “To those who advocate the right to die, I always say, ‘Don’t worry; you won’t miss out on it.”

As the world’s largest Catholic ministry focused exclusively on ending abortion and euthanasia, Priests for Life has brought attention over the years to key cases that pertain to what the bishops teach in this document. In particular, the case of Terri Schiavo in 2005, and of Baby Joseph this year, have been opportunities for God’s people to rally on behalf of the vulnerable, and have been a teaching moment for our entire society.

“Building on the bishops’ statement, we will see to it that every priest has resources to preach and teach on this aspect of the Gospel of Life,” Father Pavone said. “The statement has been issued. Now it’s time to exercise the courage to echo and apply its teaching, and to call our people to say to the ill and vulnerable what Jesus says to us all: I am with you!”

For more information and for the statement itself, see www.priestsforlife.org/euthanasia.

Happy Fathers’ Day

Friday, June 17th, 2011

“Behold, children are a gift from the Lord…
How blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them…”
– Psalm 127:3,5

My pastor asked me this week to recall three things my father, Rev. Alfred Daniel Williams King taught me. I quickly responded this way. Daddy taught me that Jesus walked on the water, and he calmed the seas. I believed my daddy, and he taught me early to follow on to know Jesus. Daddy gave me my “sweet sixteen” birthday party, and my first set of pearls. He taught me that I am a pearl of great price, a jewel to be treasured and never abused. He taught me all about civil rights and human rights, and took me on marches and to protests, and taught me to approach civil unrest with prayer, love and nonviolence. These three memory gifts I shared with my pastor and his wife. I didn’t mention that Daddy taught me how to cook, how to swim, how to discern between friends and enemies, and so many more things. He gave me the gift of 23 chromosomes, which are part of my life. Daddy gave me my name. Al (after him) Veda (life) Celeste (to get me as close to Heaven as he could he said). The name King spans generations, from Africa and Ireland, and my mother’s father was part Native American. My Daddy gave me so much during his lifetime, that there isn’t room to tell all. I miss him so much.

My Daddy and Granddaddy saved me from abortion in 1950. My mother Naomi Barber King was a young woman starting her first year in college, and she was approached by the Birth Control League (which later became Planned Parenthood) with literature about “women’s rights.” They were saying that a baby in the womb was a “lump of flesh” and that women didn’t have to stay pregnant if they didn’t want to. Abortion was illegal in those days, so a procedure called DNC was recommended. Mother’s mother, Big Mama Bessie wasn’t buying this, so she took Mother to see my grandfather, Daddy King. Granddaddy told Mother, “Neenie, they are lying to you. This isn’t a lump of flesh, she’s my granddaughter, I saw her in a dream three years ago. She has bright red hair and fair skin.” Daddy King had a dream, and his dream is in my genes. The King Family legacy is filled with dreamers, my famous uncle, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. being the most noted among us.

In celebrating Fathers’ Day this year, I am reminded of another father, American Idol judge Steven Tyler. In his recent book, he tells his story about being there when his son was aborted. I am reminded how much abortion affects not only the babies in the womb, not just the mothers of the babies, but the fathers too. I’m wondering if actor Russell Crowe ever thinks about this? He recently tweeted, “Abortion should always be a woman’s choice, there is no benefit to ‘forced’ motherhood…you got it? don’t like it then bye,” which was in contradiction to an earlier tweet about circumcision in which among other things he said, “…Babies are perfect.” and that he will “always stand for the perfection of babies, I will always believe in God…”

Today I want to celebrate fathers who along with the mothers of their children, choose life. I also want to pray with those post abortive fathers, and tell them about Rachael’s Vineyard and Silent No More Awareness. I’m a post abortive mother, and have found hope and healing after abortion. In his book, Redeeming a Father’s Heart, Kevin Burke says men need healing too.

Anyway, Happy Fathers’ Day to fathers everywhere.

Another Reason To Stay Away From Susan G. Komen for the Cure

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

I wrote a blog about the antics of Susan G. Komen for the Cure last year.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure and Planned Parenthood (Oct. 11, 2010)

Today I read a story in LifeNews.com about Susan G Komen for the Cure referring women to Planned Parenthood for mammograms which they don’t do. Live Action did an undercover investigation where they called Planned Parenthood and ask for an appointment to have a mammogram done and, well, see for yourself.

The article rightly points out that “Last year, Komen spokesman John Hammarley confirmed 20 of Komen’s 122 affiliates have made donations to Planned Parenthood and, in 2009, those contributions totaled $731,303. He also confirmed Komen affiliates contributed about $3.3 million to the abortion business from 2004-2009.” Their excuse is that only some of the affiliates give to Planned Parenthood.

Now, by Susan G. Komen for the Cure referring women to Planned Parenthood, they are further solidifying their relationship with Planned Parenthood who, by performing abortions, increases the risk of those women developing breast cancer, a risk of upwards of 40% by some studies.

I know what you’re thinking. So what? Lots of companies give money to Planned Parenthood. That may be but Susan G. Komen for the Cure’s mission as stated on their website says, “As the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists, we’re working together to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures.” This is all good and well if they weren’t giving money to the largest abortion provider in America especially since abortion has been linked with an increased risk of breast cancer.

Check out these stories to find out about the link between breast cancer and abortion: The ABC Link, Top scientist finally admits abortion-breast cancer link, National Cancer Institute Researcher Admits Abortion-Breast Cancer Link True, and my favorite, National Cancer Institute Must Tell Women Abortion, Breast Cancer Linked, in which Dr. Gerald Nadal explains why abortions increase a woman’s risk of breast cancer. These are but a few of the many articles on the link between abortion and breast cancer, a link that Susan G. Komen for the Cure refuses to acknowledge.

By their refusal to acknowledge this connection, Susan G. Komen for the Cure solicits donations from individuals and businesses to help them find a cure and then they take a portion of those donations and give it to an organization whose mission is to increase the number of abortions they perform thereby increasing the number of women that will eventually get breast cancer. If that was my money being used in that way, I would stop donating to them and encourage everyone, my family, friends, colleagues, twitter followers, strangers, everyone, to stop giving to Susan G. Komen for the Cure until they stopped funding Planned Parenthood.

Billboard Campaign Exposes Planned Parenthood

Wednesday, June 15th, 2011

Contact: Walter B. Hoye II, Issues4Life Foundation, 510-225-4055
June 15, 2011

OAKLAND, CA/Christian Newswire/ — The Issues4Life Foundation and The Radiance Foundation, launch a TooManyAborted.Com abortion awareness and pro-adoption themed campaign, entitled “BLACK&BEAUTIFUL.” This Black American led initiative exposes Planned Parenthood’s racist and eugenics-based history and unaltered course. Sixty (60) “BLACK&BEAUTIFUL” billboards are placed throughout Oakland.

June serves as the grim anniversary of legalized abortion in California through the Therapeutic Abortion Act of 1967. That year, there were 518 legal abortions. Today, California is the nation’s abortion capital with over 214,190 abortions performed each year among its 522 abortion “providers.” The CDC reports that the Black abortion rate is over 3 times that of the majority population — differences which cannot be explained by “health care disparities.”

Walter B. Hoye II, President of the Issues4Life Foundation, a Black American leader committed to ending abortion, has raised awareness nationwide. “The impact of abortion in the Black Community is the Darfur of America,” Hoye declares, citing the 15 million Black American lives that have been aborted since 1973.

The Radiance Foundation’s co-founder, Ryan Bomberger, created the TooManyAborted.Com campaign and is an adoptee and adoptive father. “Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion chain, is a failure. They haven’t budged the national unintended pregnancy rate since 1995 but are relentlessly dedicated to increasing their annual share of abortions. They heavily advocate a singular ‘choice’ that feeds their $1 billion dollar tax-payer subsidized budget,” Bomberger says.

La Verne Tolbert, Ph.D., author of “Keeping You & Your Kids Sexually Pure” and a former Board Member of Planned Parenthood knows about the abortion chain’s tactics. “In California, children are targeted for abortions through school-based clinics and school-linked clinics, which are family planning clinics on or near school grounds. Girls are taken off campus to a Planned Parenthood clinic, where abortions are performed without parental consent or notification.”

The Issues4life Foundation is a nonprofit organization, based in California, dedicated to protecting human life from our biological beginning until death and works with Black leaders to strengthen their stand against abortion.

The Radiance Foundation is a nonprofit organization that seeks to inspire people to live a life of meaning. Through media and community outreach efforts, they illuminate the intrinsic value each person possesses.

The Press Conference will be held June 18th at 1001 Broadway, Room 201, Oakland, CA 94607-4019 from 9:00 A.M. to 10:00 A.M.

The Maafa21 documentary screening will immediately follow the Press Conference.

Priests for Life Mourns Passing of Fr. Richard Hogan

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, expressed sadness today at the death of Fr. Richard Hogan, a priest of the Archdiocese of Minneapolis-St Paul who was released in 1995 to be the full-time Associate Director of Priests for Life. He served in that capacity for five years. He was the first priest, aside from Fr. Frank Pavone, to be given permission to serve Priests for Life as his full-time ministry.

Fr. Hogan was a scholar and author, and wrote on the theology of the body and the philosophical and theological thought of Pope John Paul II, especially as it relates to the cause of family and life.

Fr. Pavone stated, “Fr. Hogan gave witness to the Church’s teachings on life in a persuasive and compassionate way. He enjoyed traveling and speaking on the Priests for Life mission, and was convinced that the Church is the key to resolving the problem of abortion. In particular, his willingness to serve this mission full-time, and the willingness of his Archbishop (who at that time was Most Rev. Harry Flynn) to allow him to do so, was a sign to the Church that saving the unborn is important enough for us to invest money and manpower into that specific mission.

“With the passing of Fr. Hogan, it is my prayer that we will continue to see more priests and deacons seek and receive permission to minister to the unborn on a full-time basis. Moreover, we renew the call for lay people to devote themselves full-time to the pro-life cause,” Fr. Pavone said.

Priests for Life Calls for Probe of La. Department of Health and Hospitals

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Date: June 14, 2011

Contact: Andre Kim
347-286-7277

STATEN ISLAND, NY — Priests for Life has joined a Louisiana pro-life advocate in calling for an independent investigation of that state’s Department of Health and Hospitals (DHH).

Baton Rouge resident Richard Mahoney has uncovered evidence that Delta Women’s Clinic in Baton Rouge has, for decades, falsified medical records and under-reported the number of abortions that result in death or injury to pregnant women. DHH officials have been aware of the practice and have allowed it to continue, he alleges.

Father Peter West, associate director of Priests for Life, is working with Mahoney to expose abuses at DHH and Delta, which has ties to indicted Philadelphia abortionist Kermit Gosnell.

Mahoney has documents that show Delta Clinic submits forms to DHH on which many of the boxes had been pre-filled. On two separate forms, the box for “Complication of Pregnancy Termination” have been pre-printed with an “x” next to the “None” response.

“This practice of falsifying legal documents to the DHH’s Office of Vital Records and the medical malpractice and fraud involved in sending forms to the DHH that were … completed prior to seeing any patients, is tantamount to the largest travesty of justice ever perpetrated by the medical establishment under the guise of women’s reproductive health care,” Mahoney said. “In no other branch of medical practice would this be tolerated. The ramifications of these perjuries to the health of women in the United States is staggering.”

Father West said it is within DHH’s power to close Delta Clinic immediately.

“Under a 2010 law, DHH has the authority to close abortion facilities that violate state standards,” said Father West. “In fact, the publicity surrounding Delta Clinic in Baton Rouge is at least partially responsible for the closure of a New Orleans abortion facility. We demand that DHH immediately use its power to close Delta. Failing that, Priests for Life demands an independent congressional investigation of DHH.”

In the past, Delta owner Leroy Brinkley employed Gosnell one day a week. Eileen White O’Neil, who has been charged in the Gosnell case with pretending to be a licensed physician, also has worked for Brinkley.
“Women in Louisiana need to know the danger they are in once they step inside Delta Clinic,” Father West said. “DHH has the authority to shut it down today, and yet officials refuse to act. It’s time – it’s way past time – to find out why.”

Mahoney said: “The public needs to know the truth about abortion, the atrocities that have been committed by the abortion industry, and the government’s complicity in the skewing of the number of abortions performed and the injuries and complications associated with these procedures. All records that were falsified to the DHH Vital Records Registry need to be corrected and the appropriate information needs to be reported for each patient. We believe that only a Congressional hearing and an Independent Council investigation on these false reporting practices will reveal the truth about these abominable practices.”

Saint’s Daughter To Visit Priests for Life Office

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Date: June 13, 2011

Contact: Andre Kim
347-286-7277

STATEN ISLAND, NY — An image and relic of St. Gianna Molla will be enshrined permanently in the offices of Priests for Life when the saint’s daughter visits the United States next month.

Dr. Gianna Emanuela Molla’s July 11 visit to Staten Island will be part of a tour that will culminate July 23 in a daylong conference in Kansas City hosted by the St. Gianna Physician’s Guild.

St. Gianna Beretta Molla was canonized a saint in May 2004, the last saint to be canonized by Blessed Pope John Paul II. She was a dedicated wife, mother and physician who sacrificed her life when, pregnant with her fourth child, doctors discovered a tumor in her uterus. She opted for a risky operation to remove the tumor that preserved the life of her child rather than undergo a hysterectomy. Six days after giving birth to Gianna Emanuela, she died from complications.

“It is a blessing for any nation to be visited by the daughter of a saint and to be reminded of a life of heroic virtue,” said Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life. “In this case in particular, however, the visit of Gianna Emanuela is a call to America to recapture its own heart, to rekindle its commitment to the right to life, which it was founded to protect. St. Gianna Molla can teach America what true freedom is meant to be – a gift in the service of life!”

On July 12 at 7 p.m., Father Pavone will be the celebrant of a special Mass at the shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa in Doylestown, Pa. Following Mass Dr. Molla will speak about her mother and several relics will be exposed for public veneration.

To view Dr. Molla’s schedule of events, please visit www.StGiannaPhysicians.org

Health Departments Taking Up the Slack Without the Killing

Monday, June 13th, 2011

It looks like Tennessee is on the right track.

They are getting the County Health Departments to take over the health services that have been delivered by Planned Parenthood. By doing this, the state will still be able to offer low-income women access to healthcare without offering abortions, which isn’t healthcare anyway. All but two counties have been providing healthcare in-house and now one of them, Nashville-Davidson County Health Department, “Under pressure from the administration of Gov. Bill Haslam … reversed itself and told the state Friday that it will take over $335,000 in health services that have been delivered, under contract, by Planned Parenthood for several years.” Shelby County Health Department, the other county not offering in-house healthcare “on Friday asked for and received an extra week to decide whether it can take over $748,000 in health and family planning services currently provided by Planned Parenthood of Greater Memphis.”

What a great way to avoid funneling federal tax-dollars to Planned Parenthood. If all state health departments offered the same health and family planning services that Planned Parenthood offers without the killing service of abortion, then pro-choice advocates can stop crying about the poor not being able to access healthcare and those that want to have abortions can visit one of the remaining Planned Parenthood offices that are left after they no longer have our tax dollars keeping them afloat and paying for all their lobbying to keep abortion legal and funded.

As Terrible as it May Sound; White Indifference to Black Abortion Rates

Thursday, June 9th, 2011

By: Kevin Burke and Dr. Alveda King

In The Chicago Tribune (April 25, 2011) Dennis Byrne uses a recent billboard controversy in Chicago as an urgent plea to move beyond the polarizing abortion rhetoric to take a closer look at abortion in the African American community.

The billboard features a picture of President Barack Obama and proclaims:

“Every 21 minutes our next possible leader is aborted.” It’s part of a national campaign that states that “Black children are an endangered species.”

It’s hard to argue with the facts.

According to the Census Bureau, the rate of abortions in 2006 among black women was 50 per 1,000, compared with 14 for white women and 22 for “other” women. In New York City, 6 out of every 10 unborn African Americans are aborted! Since 1973 13 million African American pregnancies have been ended by abortion.

What is the public response to the alarming abortion rate, especially in places like NYC? The response is often indifference… and silence.

However, a response to Byrne’s Chicago Tribune article in the comments section is illuminative, because beneath this silence lie unspoken assumptions:

“Let them exercise their right to abortions. As terrible as it may sound, imagine the crime rates and social services that would be required in addition to all we already provide, if abortions didn’t happen in the black community.”

For many Americans, (particularly among non blacks) abortion is seen as a “terrible” but necessary solution to managing the birth rate of a community where the Family is already on life support and city and state budgets for social services are pushed to the breaking point.

Missing The Post Abortion Connection

The tragic mistake here is the failure to see the high price that minority communities pay for their high abortion rate. There is a dynamic and toxic synergy at work in the after-effects of the abortion procedure interacting with and intensifying the ongoing social problems that plague these communities. How does the experience of abortion make black women, their living children and relationships more vulnerable to ongoing dysfunction, exploitation, poverty and abuse?

In Forbidden Grief: The Unspoken Pain of Abortion, Dr Theresa Burke reveals that for many women, while abortion may initially appear to solve the problem of an unplanned pregnancy, the unfolding consequences of the procedure can be devastating. This is especially true for women who have a previous history of sexual, emotional/physical abuse. Dr Burke found that in her work with thousands of post abortive women, this population with previous abuse/trauma had a higher rate of depression, anxiety, relationship instability, and parenting problems after their abortion.

If we look at the rate of sexual abuse among Africa Americans, we find a group of women that is especially vulnerable to post abortion complications:

* 1 in 4 women, 3.3 million African American women have been sexually abused.
(No Secrets No Lies: How Black Families Can Heal from Sexual Abuse, Robin D. Stone)

How does previous abuse intensify post abortion symptoms and complicate post abortion recovery? Dr Burke shares in Forbidden Grief that the invasive and painful experience of the abortion procedure serves to re enact the physical and emotional violation of previous sexual abuse. After the abortion the women experiences a powerful resurgence of the repressed shame, anxiety, and grief of that previous exploitation. The common coping mechanism for this unleashed traumatic emotion…addictive substances, impulsive acting out in relationships, episodes of rage and grief.

We think that abortion will protect an African American woman from the challenges of single parenthood, or the burden of additional mouths to feed. But this is a suicidal trap for the black community.

Abortion creates emotional, spiritual and physical wounds and vulnerabilities that only exacerbate pre existing abuse and other trauma and makes women more vulnerable to ongoing exploitation, dysfunction and abuse and in their relationships.

We know that this instability and dysfunction in relationships leads to breakdown in family life, leaving children vulnerable to predatory relatives, partners and friends. The cycle continues…more abuse, more trauma, more abortions, more death.

Multiple Abortions

When a woman has her first abortion, and is unable to find emotional and spiritual healing of that loss, she is more likely to find herself on the abortionist table again. The most recent statistics from the Alan Guttmacher Institute reveal that 47% of abortions are repeat procedures. Many see this as callous irresponsibility on the part of minority women (though repeat abortion statistics are consistent among other nationalities.)

But there is a tragic psychological drama unfolding in the lives of these post abortive women. Dr Burke explored the dynamics of repeat abortions in her international clinical experience. She discovered that abortion in these cases becomes part of an unconscious process to gain mastery over the experience and feelings associated with the initial abortion trauma…to feel a sense of control, and over time, detached indifference.
But this traumatic mastery comes at a high price as emotional and relational dysfunction flourish in these women’s lives. (This reveals the importance of emotional and spiritual healing of this loss, for women and men in programs like Rachel’s Vineyard. Obviously we want to prevent abortions if at all possible. However, if there is an abortion, healing resources are essential after that initial procedure to prevent multiple abortions and deepening dysfunction.)

The Cycle of Death

This cycle of death and destruction in the African American community will never end as long as abortion is seen as an acceptable way to respond to an unplanned or unwanted pregnancy. It is indeed challenging to face the scope and complexity of the problems facing our poor minority communities. It is tempting to see abortion as a cost effective and even compassionate short term solution to these problems:

“As terrible as it may sound, imagine the crime rates and social services that would be required in addition to all we already provide, if abortions didn’t happen in the black community.”

As terrible as it may sound ? …it’s even worse than it sounds.

Abortion, far from being a cost effective solution is in effect accelerating the devastating implosion of poor black communities.

Dr Alveda King, Niece of Dr Martin Luther King, Jr. and other influential African American leaders, are pointing to the film Maafa21 produced by Life Dynamics as proving factual evidence that this implosion in poor black communities is rooted in a well planned and orchestrated strategy of genocide by the eugenics movement. Blacks, the poor and other minorities are at the top of the list for elimination, or at the very least reduction of their populations by abortion. If you think this is crazy conspiracy thinking, please take the time to view this powerful film and remember that 6 out of 10 unborn black children die by abortion in New York City alone.

Justice for All

Dr. Alveda King often quotes her uncle Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., when she addresses the issue of abortion:

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. – Martin Luther King, Jr.

Targeting vulnerable minority communities with birth control and abortion services has decimated the black community. But genocide in any form is an injustice to our society as a whole and threatens the fundamental and inalienable rights and liberties endowed to all of us by our Creator.

A just and compassionate society must find solutions that value the lives of African American unborn children and the health and welfare of their parents and communities. Abortion is not the answer.

Dr. Alveda King is the daughter of the late civil rights activist Rev. A.D. King and his wife Naomi Barber King, and serves as a Pastoral Associate and Director of African-American Outreach for Priests for Life and Gospel of Life Ministries. Kevin Burke, LSW is the co founder of Rachel’s Vineyard Ministries, also serves as a Pastoral Associate with Priests for Life and is the author of Redeeming A Father’s Heart.
