I’ve been paying close attention to the murder trial of late-term abortionist Kermit Gosnell, both by going to Philadelphia and be reading about the proceedings and watching the news, such as it is. And like so many others, I have been angry about the atrocities Gosnell perpetrated on so many women and babies, and rightfully so.
But I have also watched and seen how so many people are SO angry that they want vengeance, payback, an eye for an eye. The horrible things that Gosnell did to the poor defenseless babies and their mothers has stirred the emotions of so many that we see some people lashing out before they can even pray.
Last week on Facebook I posed a question asking people if they thought that Gosnell deserved the death penalty if found guilty of murdering the mother and babies. Most said yes and not only yes but ‘H’ ‘E’ double hockey sticks yes. Some thought he should have his own spine ‘snipped’ as he did to hose babies.
And then there’s my good friend Bryan Kemper who keeps saying that we need to ‘pray for Gosnell’s soul.’ These prayers help bring everything into perspective. Father Pavone is even asked if he could see Gosnell to talk to him and is willing to pray with Gosnell if it is allowed.
If we profess to be people of God and we believe that life is for God to give and to take, then we must also believe as it is written in Romans 12:19 Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord.
It is a hard thing to do, to love someone like Gosnell. But remember that even Gosnell was made in the image of God. He may have turned his back on God. He may have hardened his heart. He may not even want to repent. But that is between him and God. We are only called to love him and pray for him.
I want justice for the babies and the mothers that he hurt and killed but I also want mercy for his soul. Life in prison will give him an opportunity to hear about the mercy of God and give him a chance to repent of the evil he has committed.
”This is what the Lord Almighty said: ‘Administer true justice; show mercy and compassion to one another. – Zechariah 7:9
Dear Lord, I pray that Kermit Gosnell gets the punishment he deserves. I also pray for the soul of Kermit Gosnell and that, through the love he is shown, in spite of his lack of showing love to others, he may repent of all his sins and beg for forgiveness which we know you will grant him. And I pray that when it’s my time to stand before You for judgment, that You will show me the same mercy You show to Gosnell. I ask this through Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, Amen!
