Priests for Life HHS Lawsuit Moves Forward; Latest Government “Accommodation” Is No Accommodation at All

Staten Island, NY – Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life (PFL), today announced that Priests for Life has responded to the Obama administration’s latest HHS mandate maneuver with a supplemental legal brief filed with the District of Columbia Circuit Court of Appeals. Priests for Life’s lawsuit against the mandate is currently before that court, the second highest in the nation. Priests for Life was the first of the religious non-profit cases against the mandate to have oral arguments at the appellate level, back in May.

“The Obama administration keeps trying to put a new coat of paint on a house that cannot stand,” said Fr. Pavone. “The seventh and latest version of the HHS mandate is no different from the others that courts around the country have found unconstitutional. It is a violation of all Americans’ fundamental right to religious freedom.”

The D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals is currently considering the appeal brought by Priests for Life and individual plaintiffs Fr. Pavone, PFL Executive Director Janet Morana, and PFL African American Outreach Director, Alveda King. The lawsuit challenges the Obamacare regulation requiring religious non-profit organizations to violate their religious beliefs by participating in the provision of abortion causing drugs, contraceptives, and sterilizations to employees or face crippling fines.

“Priests for Life will not comply in any way, shape or form with this latest ‘accommodation’ which is, in fact, no accommodation at all,” added Fr. Pavone. “If necessary, we will take this fight to the Supreme Court. No American should be forced by the government to violate his religious beliefs, especially when the government can achieve its policy goals in other ways.”

“They say that the definition of insanity is to do the same thing over and over and expect a different result. By that definition, this administration should see a doctor,” stated Mrs. Morana. “This new accommodation is the same as the old accommodation that the Supreme Court indicated was unconstitutional. Logic would indicate that a real change in policy should be in order, but logic doesn’t seem to enter into the equation here.”

“Why this administration is intent on coercing religious believers to violate their faith defies understanding,” added Dr. King. “The President could easily find alternatives to the current HHS mandate, but he seems intent on imposing his will. If the choice is between obeying God or the Department of Health and Human Services, we will choose God every time.”

GIVERS, GODFATHERS, and THE CONSIGLIERE FACTOR

Monday, September 15th, 2014

140915 blog image Revised2

“Euphemism – a mild, pleasant or indirect word or expression substituted for one considered to be too harsh or blunt when referring to something unpleasant or embarrassing.” Examples: euthanasia or “mercy” killing means intentional bringing premature death to a sick or elderly victim. Abortion means killing a baby.

It’s interesting how fictitious movies can reflect the currents of reality. I often find myself viewing films, music videos and visual arts from the sensory perspective of how reality can actually be stranger than fiction.

In light of these perusals, I find myself meditating on how classic literary and film projects like THE GIVER and THE GODFATHER apply euphemisms that reveal so much about humanity while euthanizing the darker side of human nature. Both films cloak violence in terms like “lose” a person rather than kill a person; “release” a baby or elderly person rather than kill the person; and assigning a “consigliere”(a new word for me) to “eliminate” perceived threats to a system or a dynasty.

During recent morning meditations, I paused to reflect on recent conversations with law enforcement and military personnel. They all told me pretty much the same thing – that soldiers and police are trained not to “neutralize” (as in stop) but to “eliminate” (as in kill) threats.

Reflection on these conversations led me to consider how “keepers of the peace” sometimes use “excessive force.” I remembered facing guns, dogs, bombs, water hoses and billy clubs in the 20th Century Civil Rights Era; which ironically is being replayed in Ferguson today.

Still ruminating… The innocent womb babies flash across the scene. Raw, ruthless power causes them to lose their lives before they can see the sunlight.

Now come young people like Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin, Lakisha Wilson, Tonya Reaves, the beheaded American journalists and British aid worker, the Black on Black killings in Chicago, and on and on and on…

Enter “The Consigliere Factor.” The word “consigliere” comes from the Italian, meaning counselor or advisor; most famously for an organized crime boss.

In medieval times, nobles/consiglieres of a conquered court would make themselves available to the new monarch. Only the most trusted and knowledgeable nobleman could become a consigliere and could serve several generations of ruling families.

Today, some politicians or other public figures might also depend on the services of consiglieres. Since the Godfather movies made the term infamous, though, political candidates don’t use that word for their “advisors.”

Various celebrities also use the services of a consigliere to help navigate their careers. Their agents, publicists, directors and the like may have their own agendas, so it is not unusual for in-demand celebrities to seek the opinion of trusted advisors before signing any contracts.

Often the advisor, whether in politics-land or celebrity-ville, is a close friend or family member. If the advisor is not as wise as he or his patron thinks he is things can become very rocky.

So let me tie all of this together.

Maybe too many of today’s important decisions are being guided by powerful consiglieres who lean on their own limited wisdom instead of God’s. Most likely, this has been the case since the fall of man.

The Founders of America tried to rein in this prideful tendency of human exaltation. Early on, America, with all our faults, was “one nation under God.” Somewhere along the way we have forgotten God and relied on the so-called “experts” who do what is wise in their own eyes.

Have we become a nation guided by consiglieres?

Before I sound too negative toward consiglieres, advisors, or consultants, let me point out that Proverbs 15:22 reminds us, “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.” Yet Proverbs also tells us, “Do not put your trust in princes, in human beings, who cannot save.”

The best course of action, to end sickness, poverty, war, racism and all problems, is to seek many advisors who look to God for wisdom, not to their own understanding.

According to “Consigliere 101” however, the expert alone knows best. She or he believes he is the source of wisdom and he is only too happy to tell us what to do.

So, when the consigliere tells a soldier or law officer to see people as threats, it is easier for the officer to empty a clip or a magazine into a “target” than it is to remember that the target is a human being. After all, it’s easier to use excessive force to kill a target than an acknowledged fellow human being.

Of course, some people really are threats. Police and soldiers face real danger to their lives and safety on a daily, if not moment-by-moment basis. And just as they need to remember that those they serve are created in God’s image, so must we, the public, remember that law and military enforcement officers are made in God’s image, are meant to serve us, and are often willing to give their lives for us.

What I’m concerned about is the mindset that is created when we forget God. Life becomes less significant, less sacred.

Now, I’m wondering if Planned Parenthood and the abortion lobby are guided by the Consigliere Factor. Think about it. According to the abortion lobby, the baby in the womb isn’t a human being, he or she is a “threat” to the mother’s emotional health or finances or reproductive freedom. So, eliminate the threat.

I may be whistling into the wind here. People may think I’m being silly, but it seems that we are putting our confidence in the wrong place these days. We seem to be depending solely on human advisors and weapons of war. We are forgetting that the Bible is the final authority.

We need to go back to striving to be “one nation under God.” We need to “know The Prince of Peace who will meet out truth and justice.” We need to really mean “In God we trust.”

An Open Letter to Tasha Smith, Nia Long, Gabrielle Union, Star Jones, Keli Goff, and other Black entertainers and media:

By definition, an ambassador is “a person who acts as a representative or promoter of a specified activity.” This definition settles the question some of us were debating about whether or not you are aware of what you are promoting when you speak for Planned Parenthood. It deeply saddens and, yes, angers us that you are representing, and actually promoting an organization whose mission is population control and whose goals are to specifically control the Black birth rate even if it results in genocide.

More disturbing is your willingness to ignore the many and varied examples of the devastation this organization has wreaked on your friends, sisters, cousins, aunties and nieces. You are signaling that you agree with the treatment Black women have received at the hands of Planned Parenthood personnel. You are signaling that you agree, for example:

• With the tortuous death Tonya Reaves experienced when she was left bleeding in a Chicago Planned Parenthood for more than five hours after the abortionist botched her abortion. Only after scrapping her uterus another three times and still failing to complete the abortion did they transport her to the nearest trauma center. (http://cbsloc.al/1oolaSc)

• With Planned Parenthood’s failing to report the rape of minors, thereby protecting pedophiles, as was the case in Colorado. A 13 year old who was impregnated by her stepfather, who had molested her since she was 6; was sent back home with him after he took her for an abortion and a birth control shot. They failed to act even though there were clear signs of abuse. (http://bit.ly/1qJfPIv)

• With Planned Parenthood operating substandard abortion centers that put women at risk as was found in Delaware. (http://6abc.cm/1BpHwLd)

• With Planned Parenthood changing its business model and now requiring all of their affiliates to do abortions which has made them the largest purveyor of abortion in America (http://bit.ly/1nJ1ecE)

• With the targeting of Black women as was demonstrated in the 2013 study published by Protecting Black Life (http://bit.ly/1pB0NDL). Seventy nine percent of their surgical facilities are located within a two mile walking radius of a Black or Latino neighborhood. This pattern is continuing as demonstrated by the recent opening of a new 17,000 square foot facility within a two mile walking radius of 5 mega Black churches and within 10 miles of two others in Dallas Texas.

History matters.. Abortions’ racist foundation has been effectively concealed from the beginning and many in the Black community do not realize the war against black family reproduction began in 1916 with the founding of Margaret Sanger’s Birth Control League.

However, as one of Planned Parenthood’s ambassadors, it must be concluded that you do know that by the late 1930s Sanger, in concert with Clarence Gamble (Proctor and Gamble), launched a specific project against the Black family – The Negro Project – that “… sought to bring about a major birth-rate reduction among American Negroes.” (http://bit.ly/1tduQlp) Since Planned Parenthood tells us on their website that Sanger’s early efforts remain the hallmark of their mission, we must conclude that you know and are willingly complicit in the ethnic cleansing that is inherent in their mission and evident by the reduction of the Black population in America.

So we are writing to ask you to cease and desist in promoting this organization that is bent on erasing the Black community. Alveda King (www.kingrulesbook.com) often reminds us that her uncle, Martin Luther King, Jr., warned us about the perils of infanticide. He said “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere”. We invite you to join us in stopping the leading cause of death in the Black community. Speak out now while there is still time to impact and change the course of devastation that is silently destroying us from within.

STATEN ISLAND, NY — Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, announced today that another Centurions Rehabilitation Program has been scheduled for August 7 – 15, 2015 in Victoria, Canada. This is a healing program for those who have worked in the abortion industry and have come out.

“Having met extensively a few weeks ago with my long-time friends Dr. Philip and Marie Ney, who established in 1996 the Society of Centurions, we laid out plans for 2015 and beyond to reach more people with the intensive healing that is needed after one has worked in the abortion industry. I have been privileged over the last two decades to be involved in offering this rehabilitation program for former clinic workers, both in the United States and abroad. Dr. Ney, a psychiatrist, has done the pioneer research in this area and established this program, based on his medical research. There are no quick fixes; the healing is hard work and lasts a lifetime.”

The rehabilitation program for next August involves a week of intense psychological and spiritual self-examination and healing exercises in a small, confidential group setting. Those who want to explore taking advantage of this unique model of healing can go to www.SocietyofCenturions.com to request more information through the online form. Individual consultation with Fr. Frank and others who are familiar with this process is available as preparations are made for the August gathering.

Priests for Life promotes National Voter Registration Sunday

Friday, September 5th, 2014

PriestsForLife

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Date: September 5, 2014

Contact: Leslie Palma
347-286-7277

NEW YORK, NY — The final National Voter Registration Sunday will take place this Sunday, Sept. 7.

Voter Registration Sundays are promoted by Priests for Life and other national pro-life and pro-family organizations to encourage pastors and church attendees to do what they are legally entitled to do – conduct non-partisan voter registration drives.

While this Sunday will be the final official day of these registration efforts this year, churches, prayer groups, and Bible studies can register voters on any day of their choosing.

Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, commented on the importance of registering voters in time for the November elections.

“It’s mid-term election season, and the importance of an active and informed electorate is greater than it has ever been. The moral direction of America is largely in our hands. Our duty is not only to convert minds and hearts; it is to change laws and policies. And we do that by electing those who share our convictions about what those laws and policies should be.

“The first thing to do, practically, is to register to vote, and to call upon our pastors to have non-partisan voter registration drives in our parishes. Then we have to look closely at the races in our states, and find out who can, in our judgment, best advance the Culture of Life.”

New episodes this week on “Defending Life” and “The Catholic View for Women”

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2014

PriestsForLife

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Date: September 3, 2014

Contact: Leslie Palma
347-286-7277

NEW YORK, NY — “Defending Life,” the longest-running and farthest-reaching television series on abortion, and “The Catholic View for Women,” a thought-provoking alternative to secular talk shows, will air new episodes on EWTN beginning this week.

“Defending Life,” which has been a part of the network lineup since 1995, will air at 2:30 a.m. ET on Wednesdays and 11 p.m. ET on Thursdays. “The Catholic View for Women” will return for a fourth season with shows airing at 11 p.m. Wednesdays and 10:30 a.m. Fridays.

Co-hosts Janet Morana, Executive Director of Priests for Life, and Father Denis Wilde, O.S.A., Associate Director, will kick off the 25th season of “Defending Life” with an episode about the importance of the November mid-term elections.

“Pope Francis urged us not to be afraid of ‘making trouble’ in order to advance the Gospel,” said Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life. “What does that say about our approach to elections?”

Future episodes will cover topics including reversing chemical abortions, pro-life successes in closing abortion mills and what it’s like to work for Planned Parenthood. High-profile guests will include Bishop Anthony Fisher, O.P., Bishop of the Diocese of Parramatta, Australia, and Robert Muise, co-founder and senior counsel of the American Freedom Law Center. Muise will discuss the Priests for Life lawsuit against the HHS mandate, which is the lead case of the religious non-profit groups, and the first to have had oral arguments heard on the appellate level. A decision is expected soon.

Muise said this lawsuit “goes to the very core of Priests for Life’s reason for existing as an organization. The ministry is well situated – and perhaps best suited – to challenge the mandate and its application to non-exempt, nonprofit religious organizations.’ ”

The fourth season of the highly rated “The Catholic View for Women” promises controversy, conversion and plenty of Catholic conversation.

EWTN Rome Bureau Chief Joan Lewis will join hosts Astrid Bennett-Gutierrez, Janet Morana and Teresa Tomeo on the first episode for a discussion of two of the Church’s newest saints: Saint John Paul II and Saint John XXIII.

Future episodes will cover topics including care of the elderly and the wisdom we can gain from people in their later years; Pope Francis and the theology of women, and becoming a “24/7 Catholic.”

Other shows in this new season are sure to ignite controversy. A four-part series will take an in-depth look at the Church’s stance on homosexuality and what Pope Francis really meant when he made his now-famous “Who am I to judge” comment.

“As we have in previous seasons, we try in each of these episodes to emphasize everything you can do as a Catholic, rather than everything you can’t do,” said Mrs. Morana, the executive director of Priests for Life and co-founder of the Silent No More Awareness Campaign. “The Catholic Church has so much to offer women, and that’s what we hope to show all of our viewers.”

For more on the show, visit www.thecatholicviewforwomen.com

Referring to “Defending Life,” Father Wilde said: “We know our shows have an impact because people often write to tell us so. One letter, written by a graduate student at Purdue University, said the show ‘has inspired me to become more proactive in my pro-life efforts’ and the young woman thanked Priests for Life for ‘informing me about the awful truth of abortion, and for encouraging me to speak out against this injustice.’ “

Priests for Life urges viewers to promote the show to parishes and pro-life organizations.

“Everything Has a Different “Why,” But the Results Still Make Me Cry.”

Thursday, August 28th, 2014

MLK“The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral, begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy. Instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it….

“Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars.

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness:
only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.”

“Strength to Love,” Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., 1963

A young man is shot dead by a policeman in Missouri. A photojournalist is horrendously executed by Islamists. A dear friend’s niece and her baby are killed and their bodies burned in a family dispute.

Three non-related events have touched me deeply in recent days, each having a different “why,” but each making me cry.

I am on my way to Ferguson, Missouri now. There is grief, anger, and uncertainty there. But also there, somewhere, is the truth of how and why Michael Brown died.

That truth will be revealed in time.

We yearn, of course, for immediate answers and swift justice. There can be no justice, though, without truth. And without peace, the search for truth becomes more difficult.

In some instances, such as what happened to James Foley at the hands of ISIS or my friend’s niece and her baby at the hands of a rage-driven relative, the truth is plain to see. No explanation could possibly justify what their killers did. We know who the wrongdoers are and whatever their rationales for their actions, those rationales are woefully insufficient.

In the case of Michael Brown, we have conflicting reports as to the events that led to his shooting. The jury is not in. Yet, rather than wait for the truth, some have acted from a deep-seated sense that they already know the truth. In the name of “justice,” some victims have inflicted great injustices on themselves and the collective by turning to violence. In their pain and anger, they have brought more harm than good.

Now, I’m not saying we shouldn’t have righteous anger at acts of oppression, hatred, or cruelty that are offenses before God. God’s Word teaches us, though, that we should be slow to anger. And we should be careful to distinguish human emotional outrage over an offense to ourselves versus an offense to God. God’s righteous anger is most powerful; seeking to restore righteousness, not trample upon it by committing more wrongs.

In my book KING RULES I write about how my uncle, the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., and my father, the Rev. Alfred Daniel Williams King, knew injustice. They, like millions of other African Americans, needed no introduction; injustice greeted them virtually every day of their lives. But they also knew peace in their hearts, the peace that surpasses all understanding. And from this peace, they sought and achieved a modicum of justice for the masses.

three headed monster Revised2Yet Ferguson teaches us that the dream is still lacking. Until we slay the three headed beast of racism, reproductive genocide and sexual perversion, we still have mountains to climb and to overcome.

We live in a corrupt world. Yet God’s Word teaches us not to repay evil with evil. Instead we must live to overcome evil with good.

When Jesus was being wrongly arrested by the Romans, Peter took up a sword and cut off a soldier’s ear. Jesus responded, “Put your sword back into its place; for all those who take up the sword shall perish by the sword.” In compassion, Jesus healed the wounded soldier who had come to arrest him.

Wow! That’s a higher frequency that we should tune into our heart. Love overcoming hate.

As men of God, and students of history, Uncle M.L. and Daddy understood that violence begets violence. Violence is often borne of rage. And rage destroys – not only neighborhoods, but also lives. Rage is borne of hate. And hate does not seek the truth, but rather spawns victims. And victims seek other victims to make them suffer as they’ve suffered. Hurting people hurt people. And on and on and on souls fall towards a yawning abyss.

As Uncle M.L. Once wrote, violence is a descending spiral.

But inspired by 1 Corinthians 13, believing “Love never fails,” he also wrote, “darkness cannot drive out darkness and hatred cannot drive out hate. Only light can end the darkness, only love can drive out hate.”

My prayer is for the peace and healing of Ferguson, but also for the peace and healing of those who have recently lost loved ones – the families of Michael Brown, James Foley, my friend, those who have died at the hands of the abortion industry such as LaKisha Wilson and Tonya Reaves, and those who are victims of human trafficking, war, poverty, and other horrors of our fallen world.

My prayer is that we love truth; loving truth, that we seek it. Once finding the truth, that we seek justice. And once finding justice, we enjoy peace. As Uncle M.L. said, “true peace is not the absence of tension, but the presence of justice.”

#heartsoftheparentsreturntochildren

Grieving, but believing, please join me in prayer for all of Ferguson as well as for all victims of violence who suffer in sterile hospital units, in darkened rooms, in abortion chambers, and by tear-drenched gravesites. We need repentance, forgiveness, and love. Let us seek them first.

Church is Free to Preach Her Message — Unless…?

Thursday, August 28th, 2014

PriestsForLife

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Date: August 28, 2014

Contact: Leslie Palma
347-286-7277

NEW YORK, NY — In a hard-hitting series of essays currently being released in preparation for the midterm elections, Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, takes aim at the self-censorship that Churches and Church-related institutions engage in when it comes to speaking up about politics and elections. Called “Politics and the Pulpit,” the series can be found at PriestsForLife.org/columns.

One of the policy memos publicized from a Catholic diocese in a recent election cycle stated the following:

“Indeed, it is the church’s right and obligation to make its teachings on moral ideas known, as long as these teachings do not run afoul of the rules on political activity.”

Fr. Frank comments, “Look at what is being said here. ‘Rules on political activity,’ rules which originated with Lyndon B. Johnson in 1954, and are vague and very likely unconstitutional in the first place, cancel out both the right and duty of the Church to carry out her teaching mission received from Jesus Christ, the Son of God, over 2000 years ago. Are we really going to start balancing human rules with Divine commands? This is offensive and absurd, especially given the context in which the Church is fighting right now to preserve her religious freedom against a hostile Administration. The best way to preserve our religious freedom is to start exercising it.”

Fr. Frank continues, “An obvious question arises here. Unless we are to say that Churches have no freedom to teach on issues that also happen to correspond to political debates, how are they protected from the accusation of being ‘partisan’ simply because the position of the organization, or the teaching of the Church or the Gospel, corresponds to the position that one particular political party or candidate has, and is diametrically opposed to that of their opposing party or candidate? The Church opposes abortion and stands up for the rights of the unborn. The Republican Party platform takes a similar position. The Democratic Party platform, on the other hand, supports abortion as a right. So now, is the Church’s pro-life position partisan, and therefore illegal to assert? That would be both absurd and intolerable, and yet that is what some expressions of Church policy in our country would lead us to conclude.”

More commentary and practical action steps for preparation for the elections can be found at www.PoliticalResponsibility.com. A nationwide election novena begins this Tuesday, September 2, and runs through Election Day, November 4.
