Poetic Justice“I’m telling you that the best decision I ever made was keeping that baby! Yes, absolutely. Guy was a delight from the start — so good, so bright, and I can’t imagine my life without him.”
– Maya Angelou speaking of the birth of her son.

Maya Angelou touched the hearts of millions through her poetry, her wit and her wisdom. Our hearts go out to her son, Guy Johnson, and to all of her family and friends.

Not only was the poet laureate a powerful writer, artist and thinker; she was also a woman of matchless compassion and an eloquent humanitarian activist and champion of the poor and oppressed of all nations.

During the 20th Century Civil Rights Movement, she served as a fund-raiser for the cause and was a SCLC organizer. She was a close friend of my Aunt Coretta Scott King. They became “sisters” for justice. Maya and Aunt Coretta were contemporaries, and had many things in common.

For example, they were both mentors of the dearly beloved media personality Oprah Winfrey.

I admired her mostly from a distance. I did have the opportunity to meet her and greet her through the years when she graced our family with her presence. She shared her poetic gifts at memorable events that helped to support the work of the “Movement,” and later the King Center. I was blessed to be present during some of these times, and even shake her hand and receive the blessing of her smile bestowed upon me.

Sometimes we think we know a person. Then some information about them surfaces that helps us to love that person all the more. This is the case of my discovery of a life saving decision she made years ago.

I never knew until now about her personal decision to birth her son Guy who was conceived when she was a teenager. She described her decision in her first autobiography. She could have sought an illegal abortion but, instead, decided to keep her baby.

While her circumstances are not so uncommon, what is unique about her decision is that her courage, compassion and conviction that we know and love in all of her poetry enabled her to publicly share her experience which she shared in an essay published in FAMILY CIRCLE years ago. In that essay, she called her actions the best decision of her life.

“When I was 16, a boy in high school evinced interest in me, so I had sex with him — just once. And after I came out of that room, I thought, Is that all there is to it? My goodness, I’ll never do that again! Then, when I found out I was pregnant, I went to the boy and asked him for help, but he said it wasn’t his baby and he didn’t want any part of it.

I was scared to pieces. Back then, if you had money, there were some girls who got abortions, but I couldn’t deal with that idea. Oh, no. No. I knew there was somebody inside me. So I decided to keep the baby.

My older brother, Bailey, my confidant, told me not to tell my mother or she’d take me out of school. So I hid it the whole time with big blouses! Finally, three weeks before I was due, I left a note on my stepfather’s pillow telling him I was pregnant. He told my mother, and when she came home, she calmly asked me to run her bath.

I’ll never forget what she said: “Now tell me this — do you love the boy?” I said no. “Does he love you?” I said no. “Then there’s no point in ruining three lives. We are going to have our baby!”

What a knockout she was as a mother of teens. Very loving. Very accepting. Not one minute of recrimination. And I never felt any shame.

At 17 I got a job as a cook and later as a nightclub waitress. I found a room with cooking privileges, because I was a woman with a baby and needed my own place. My mother, who had a 14-room house, looked at me as if I was crazy! She said, “Remember this: You can always come home.” She kept that door open. And every time life kicked me in the belly, I would go home for a few weeks.

I struggled, sure. We lived hand-to-mouth, but it was really heart-to-hand. Guy had love and laughter and a lot of good reading and poetry as a child. Having my son brought out the best in me and enlarged my life. Whatever he missed, he himself is a great father today. He was once asked what it was like growing up in Maya Angelou’s shadow, and he said, “I always thought I was in her light.”

Years later, when I was married, I wanted to have more children, but I couldn’t conceive. Isn’t it wonderful that I had a child at 16? Praise God!”
Yes. Praise God! We thank God for her courage, her love, her gifts, and her joy of being a mother, a grandmother and a great-grandmother. Beyond what she leaves to her natural family, Maya Angelou leaves a great and memorable blessing in the hearts of the millions whom she touched with her artistry; and, she leaves behind a luminous vision of hope that will inspire millions more for generations to come.”

For Generations to Come by Dr. Alveda C. King

Our family tree means more to me, Than silver or gold, or a Rolls Royce.
I can rejoice and be glad, that Mother and Dad loved each other— and God;
Who blessed their union. From one to another, we are linked to each other…
Through the blessings and mercy or our awesome Creator; Our Creator, the Artist,
Who reminds us of Eternity; In the smiles of our children, who have the
Spirit of our ancestors—Twinkling out from their eyes . . .
Reminding us of the Generations to come.

Fr. Frank Pavone Praises Governor Fallin and Oklahoma Legislature for Law on Abortion Patient Protection

Thursday, May 29th, 2014

PriestsForLife

Staten Island, NY – Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, today praised Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin for signing into law a bill that says abortionists must have local hospital admitting privileges and abortion clinics must have equipment to handle medical emergencies.

“I remember singing in the choir in grammar school, ‘You’re doing fine, Oklahoma! Oklahoma, OK!!’ Today I am singing this again, because Governor Fallin and the Oklahoma legislature are to be commended for placing the safety of women above the profits of abortionists. This legislation ensures that a woman will receive immediate treatment in the event of a medical emergency during or after an abortion and will have continuity of care if she needs to go to a hospital,” said Fr. Pavone. “One would think that goes without saying in America, but in America’s abortion industry, it doesn’t.”

Spreading the truth that #Abortion has nothing to do with #WomensHealth

NEW YORK, NY — Priests for Life and Gospel of Life Ministries are firing on all cylinders today as it takes part in a Twitterstorm on women’s health and abortion in developing countries.

Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, is sending out Tweets from his account, @frfrankpavone, as are members of the Pastoral Team, including Youth Outreach Director Bryan Kemper, @bryankemper, and Dr. Alveda King, Director of African-American Outreach, @alvedaking. Janet Morana, executive director, is sending Tweets from @recallabortion and @regretabortion.

Through her work at the United Nations as PFL’s Special Representative, Marie Smith, director of the Parliamentary Network for Critical Issues, part of Gospel of Life Ministries, learned that today, #May28, a coalition of pro-abortion groups would take to Twitter to promote abortion as essential healthcare for women and for its inclusion in the next set of goals being created at the United Nations.

Mrs. Smith brought the event to Kemper’s attention last week. Since then, he and Andy Moore, director of online communications for Americans United for Life, have been publicizing the event across the social media universe.

“Pro-life Tweeters gave a major push back to the global promotion of abortion as part of women’s health as pro-abortion activists marked May 28 as the International Day of Action for Women’s Health,” Mrs. Smith said. “May 28 was supposed to be a day when a cacophony of pro-abortion organizations and radical feminist groups came together to advance global access to abortion, but their plans was interrupted.”

Kemper commented: “Once again the pro-life generation has risen up and taken over the Twittersphere as we have dominated #womenshealth by as much as 15 to 1 during the pro-abort Tweetfest. The youth are always called the leaders of the future but they are showing they are the leaders of today by flooding Twitter with the truth that abortion is not #womenshealth. Stand True, the youth outreach of Priests for Life is dedicated to educating, activating and equipping this generation and we are excited to see today’s successful takeover of the pro-abortion Tweetfest.”

“We really can’t underestimate the value of this kind of social engagement,” said Father Pavone. “We are directly reaching people all over the globe with important, informative messages about how abortion is not healthcare in any circumstance. To have such a global audience is exciting for us.”

Fr. Pavone: New polls show voters will demand more protection for the unborn

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

STATEN ISLAND, NY — Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, issued the following statement today about two polls on abortion attitudes that were released this week.

“The new Gallup poll on abortion, released today, and the Politico poll released earlier this week contain much good news for our nation’s unborn because they show support for additional measures to protect babies in the womb.

“The poll by Politico shows that support for measures like the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act will be strong this November,” said Fr. Pavone. “When 80 percent of voters in highly contested states and Congressional districts say they want babies protected from late-term abortions, if not most or all abortions, it’s pretty clear who the extremists are – those who support abortion on demand.”

He continued: “The Gallup poll shows that 50 percent of Americans want some restrictions on abortion, with 21 percent of those saying it should be illegal in all circumstances. These are good numbers. Half of all Americans clearly understand that abortion on demand through all nine months of pregnancy is wrong. It gives me hope that, at the very least, we will soon be able to protect babies from the brutality of a late-term abortion.”

Father Pavone noted that both polls showed a minority of Americans – 28 percent in the Gallup poll and 19 percent in Politico survey — favoring legal abortion at any time and for any reason.

“These findings are consistent with what we have seen for many years,” Father Pavone said. “Most Americans reject most abortions. It is simply false to say that most Americans support Roe v. Wade, because that decision brought us the extreme policy of abortion on demand, which most of the public rejects.”

Let the Truth Be Told.

Here’s a real life rescue by a pro-life advocate. Abby Johnson means business when it comes to exposing the truth about abortion, and ending the decimation of the lives of babies and mothers. Here’s what happened.

A 15-year-old pregnant girl who went to the Buffalo (NY) Women’s Services center for an ultrasound exam, was locked in a room by the abortion clinic and not allowed to leave. The girl’s mother, who did not want her daughter to have an abortion and who was removed from the facility after she “freaked out,” called Abby Johnson, who had been counseling the girl. Mrs. Johnson called the police, the girl was freed, and she is keeping her baby.

Abby is a former abortion provider turned pro-life advocate. She is one of thousands of women, myself included, who realize that the abortion industry has been lying to women about abortion and carcinogenic fertility blockers misnamed “birth control.” Abortion and carcinogenic birth control are not healthcare, they are injurious to the lives of women and children.

I’m reading two eye opening books right now, RECALL ABORTION by Janet Morana, and COMPLICATIONS: ABORTION’S IMPACT ON WOMEN. These books are informative and should be read by women everywhere.

I wanted to blog about my trip to the movie theater to see “Moms’ Night Out,” but this story about the young mother and her brave mother, the grandmother of her unborn child inspired me so much that I decided to blog about movies later this week.

Please, if you know a woman, a mother who just needs love and support in the midst of being coerced to abort her child, please… For Christ’s sake… Do something! A moment of decision trumps apathy. There are countless of young women like the one in this blog. They just need another hero. The pro-life movement is here to help you!

In Time For Father’s Day, A New Focus On Men And Abortion

Monday, May 19th, 2014

SNMAC

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 19, 2014

347-286-7277

Turning the Hearts of Fathers is a new initiative of the Silent No More Awareness Campaign to enlist church leaders to share the good news of forgiveness and recovery to men who have experienced abortion loss. Silent No More is a joint campaign of Priests for Life and Anglicans for Life.

The new project has been launched in time for Father’s Day, because men who have lost a child or children to abortion are often more acutely aware of that loss on the holiday that celebrates children’s love and gratitude for their fathers.

“We have learned from fathers who have taken part in an abortion that their experience damaged them as men,” said Kevin Burke, Pastoral Associate of Priests for Life and coordinator of Turning the Hearts of Fathers. “Abortion attacks the fundamental nature of the gift men bring to the family: a father’s love and protection of the children entrusted to his care. Violating this fundamental law of God can later weaken men in their vocation as husbands, fathers and spiritual leaders at home, in church and in their communities.”

Burke said priests and ministers are often wary of addressing the subject in their ministry and preaching for fear of hurting or alienating those in the congregation who have lost children to abortion. Turning the Hearts of Fathers addresses these concerns with information and resources to reach out with sensitivity and effectiveness. At the website FatherhoodForever.org, clergy will find resources to help them preach about the topic, announcements that can be included in the weekly bulletin and information on abortion recovery programs.

“What a great blessing it will be for our families, churches and nation when the millions of men involved in abortion decisions turn to Christ for healing and restoration,” Burke said.

Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life and Pastoral Director of the new initiative, noted that the participation of priests and ministers across the country is vital for the project to succeed.

“Many aspects of abortion are very sensitive, but that doesn’t mean they should be ignored,” Father Pavone said. “The impact of abortion on the lives of our people is all the more reason a shepherd must pay attention to these wounds. Ministry involves confronting problems that provoke emotions. Ministry regarding abortion involves nothing less than life and death.”

For interviews with Kevin Burke, Father Pavone or a father willing to speak on the record about his abortion loss, contact Leslie Palma at 347-286-7277 or leslie@silentnomore.com.

Since the launch of the Silent No More Awareness Campaign in 2003, 5,715 women and men have shared their testimonies publicly at over 1,325 gatherings in 48 states and 17 countries. More than 14,979 people representing 77 countries are registered to be Silent No More. Raising awareness about the hurtful aftermath of abortion and the help that is available to cope with the pain are two of the Campaign’s goals. The Campaign has over 2,014 testimonies posted here, with over 293 that are shared via video!

A Travel Guide to Life: Don’t leave home without it!

140514 blog image

A good author should recognize the gift in a colleague, and also acknowledge that gift. I’ll let you be the judge of my penmanship when my newest book KING RULES hits the stand on June 10.

Meanwhile, please read the latest offering, A TRAVEL GUIDE TO LIFE, by my friend Anthony DeStefano. The book, one in a series of TRAVEL GUIDES, is filled with insights and how to’s straight from the pen of one who successfully navigates the ups and downs of life with candor, humility, repentance and humor.

To date this new release becomes a favorite, although all of Anthony’s books are super. My grandchildren adore his children’s books. We recently read A TRAVEL GUIDE TO HEAVEN FOR CHILDREN. Delightful!

On a personal note, I remember praying for Anthony when he was preparing for his father’s transition from this life. He stoically bore it all while helping others to navigate their way through such a trying season.

I also remember Anthony tolerating my monologue about why I’m a Star Trek fan. I was lamenting about how my critics consider my Sci-Fi passion to be sinful. After all, they reason, “Christians don’t have time for fantasy. Jesus is the real deal.”

Yes, Jesus is real, and thank God for His Blood, His Love, His Mercy and HIS Grace. I’m not perfect, and we all need prayer.

I remember Anthony saying: “Alveda, we’re not perfect in this life. You pray for me, I’ll pray for you.”

On that note, I’ll close here with a prayer that you’ll read our books and enjoy them. We all need a good TRAVEL GUIDE. Don’t leave home without this gem. Blessings.

Priests for Life: Gosnell Anniversary Links Pain-Capable Bill and 2014 Elections

Tuesday, May 13th, 2014

PriestsForLife

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Date: May 13, 2014

Contact: Leslie Palma
347-286-7277

NEW YORK, NY — Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, issued the following statement this morning:

“Today marks one year since the conviction of Philadelphia abortionist Kermit Gosnell, who killed children before and after birth, and killed their mothers as well. I remember vividly the arguments in the courtroom, and how consistent these crimes are with what we see in abortion clinics throughout the nation, as detailed in the book Lime 5.

“Today we also join the voices of many in the U.S. Senate and across America in calling for a Senate vote on the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. This legislation, which would protect children in the womb from 20 weeks forward, is the next key step in reaching our ultimate goal, which is the protection of every unborn child — all of whom, without exception, we acknowledge as persons. Even among those who do not share that ultimate goal or belief, most agree that a policy allowing abortion after 20 weeks — when these children feel pain — is too extreme.

“Along with working for the passage of this legislation, Priests for Life is also implementing a project whereby each member of the U.S. Senate will be asked publicly whether he or she believes that the lives of children after 20 weeks of development should be protected in the womb. Priests for Life will see to it not only that this question is asked, but that the response — or lack thereof — is widely publicized in the state that senator represents, and across the country. Like it or not, the painful dismemberment of children in the womb is going to be a key issue in this year’s midterm elections.

“Finally, Priests for Life is planning a national memorial service for the babies and moms who were killed by Kermit Gosnell. These babies were given names in a special ceremony last year at the headquarters of Priests for Life (see www.KermitGosnell.com). The Philadelphia Medical Examiner refused to release the bodies of these children for burial. But we can have a funeral service nevertheless, and we will be calling upon the support and participation of Churches, the pro-life community, and all citizens of good will.”

Mothers’ Day Begins In The Womb: Pray For At Risk Mothers And Babies.

Friday, May 9th, 2014

140509 blog image

Tomorrow my daughters, Mother and I will attend a “Mother Daughter Tea.” We will celebrate our joyous relationships. Then, on Sunday, I will participate in a Mothers’ Day Celebration at church. There will be good singing and Bible teaching. Yet many mothers and daughters will have a bittersweet weekend.

Over 300 girls in Nigeria won’t spend a happy Mother’s Day with their families due to terrorists kidnapping them. Across America millions of aborted baby boys and girls will not feel a mother’s touch because they were silenced by abortion’s sting. Lament and weep for mothers and their children.

This year I am praying for these losses; including those of my dear friends and even family members who have lost mothers and children who are deceased by natural causes; as well as some by sickness, accidents, crimes; and yes sadly, by abortion and carcinogenic birth control.

Sadly still, just days before Mothers Day, we have received shocking news of a misguided mother who is celebrating her abortion on video:

Emily Letts tries to hide the Scary Truth

Recently Emily Letts, a former professional actress and current COSMOPOLITAN Magazine contributor advertised her “not scary” abortion which fails to show the brutal dismemberment of her baby. She posted it on YouTube. Now that’s a sick and scary thing; a very sad Mothers’ Day testimony.

Father Frank Pavone, national director of Priests for Life counsels post-abortive women who have had abortions. In the midst of hearings regarding infringement of our religious freedoms by the strong arm of the HHS Mandate, he has taken precious time to lament the pre- Mothers’ Day travesty triggered by Emily’s video:

“Actually, Emily did not film her abortion. She filmed her smiles and sighs during a procedure which we are expected to take her at her word was an abortion. But to really film an abortion, you have to film the arms and legs of the baby being ripped apart and the head being crushed,” he said.

I agree with Father Frank. I and hundreds of other women have posted our abortion testimonies at silentnomoreawareness.org. Also, more stories available at AbortionTestimony.com witness to the truth; abortion hurts women and kills babies who die horrible deaths. Emily is missing something in her video; the truth.

s Righs Begin in the Womb

At standtrue.com, my colleague Bryan Kemper writes:

“I don’t hate Emily; my heart actually breaks for her. I am just like her, a sinner who can only find the Hope I need in Christ. I know that Emily is someone’s daughter and as a father I hurt for the lost grandchild her father will never hold. As a Christian I grieve for the state of her soul and her eternal path. I will commit to praying for Emily and for her to find the Hope that is only found in our Savior, Jesus Christ.”

Father Frank, Bryan, many other colleagues and I spent yesterday at a Rally for Religious Freedom. We gathered outside the courthouse in DC to raise our concerns about the injustice of the HHS Mandate which has resulted in our PFL lawsuit. All the while I was either standing outside with the faithful, or sitting inside the courtroom at the hearing, I was remembering the pain of babies marked for slaughter and their mothers marked for deception.

In a few weeks, soon after Mothers’ Day, and followed by Fathers’ Day, on July 2, 2014 we will be celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the US Civil Rights Act. Two days later we will celebrate July 4, Independence Day. Yet the war on the wombs of women and the decimation of the natural God ordained family structure continues to tear away the very foundations of our liberty.

For those who will be celebrating Mothers’ Day with your beloved mothers, God bless you. Please remember to say a prayer for those who are not so fortunate; that God will heal our land, our wombs, and our families; and bring an end to the scourge of abortion which is at the heart of the war on women.

Please Join Us In The Struggle

Wednesday, May 7th, 2014

140507 blog image istandwithpfl

Tomorrow, Thursday, May 8, 2014 at 9:00 am, I will join Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, in Washington, DC. Standing with others in my role as Director of African American Outreach for Priests for Life, we will join our brothers and sisters at a Rally for Religious Freedom at the US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit, 333 Constitution Ave., NW Washington, DC 20001. Many will be standing with us. Please join us! If you can’t be there in person, please joins us in spirit and prayer!

Hobby Lobby is standing with us as we face the next round of challenges to our stand against the unjust HHS Mandate. On April 29, 2014, Hobby Lobby CEO David Green expressed his solidarity with Priests for Life and the other religious, non-profit groups who, like Hobby Lobby, are challenging the HHS Mandate. In support of PFL, Mr. Green released the following statement:

“The religious freedom of believers of all denominations is under attack. Our family therefore joins in prayerful support of the Priests for Life case against the HHS mandate. As our Hobby Lobby case represents the concerns of businesses, so the Priests for Life case represents the concerns of the religious non-profit groups. Together, we stand against this injustice, and for the law of God.”

Please visit www.priestsforlife.org/hhsmandate to review links and supporting information and commentary about the HHS Mandate and in particular, the Priests for Life case against the mandate.

Also, oral arguments will be heard in the US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit on Thursday, May 8, 2014. Ours (PFL) is the first of the religious non-profit cases to have oral arguments heard at the appellate level on the merits.

Priests for Life Attorney Robert Muise, Co-Founder and Chief Counsel of the American Freedom Law Center stated:

“This case with Priests for Life is the lead case for the non-profit religious organizations challenging the mandate similar to how Hobby Lobby is the lead case for the for-profit companies challenging the HHS mandate.”

Meanwhile, global attacks on the lives of infants in the womb and their mothers continue to mount. From their seats of power, some are continuing to distort truth by calling fertility rights torture.

The latest example is that of a U.N. treaty monitoring body distorting truth with a treaty to advance abortion at the Committee on the Convention Against Torture (CAT) during its 52nd Session in Geneva.

This time around, committee members-officially called experts-chastised the Holy See for its opposition to abortion during its review of the Holy See’s report on compliance with the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman, or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (Convention against Torture, CAT). Committee members stated that pro-life opposition to abortion results in torture for women. Actually the opposite is true. Abortion and carcinogenic birth control methods continue to torture and harm the lives of babies and the women who are their mothers.

So truth and liberty are at risk at home and abroad. As an African American woman, the threat to my freedom is under siege with the threat of the HHS mandate looming over my vocation at PFL, and over the plight of my people whom abortion threatens to depopulate because of our skin color.

The CDC’s latest Abortion Surveillance report (Nov. 29, 2013) found that between 2007 and 2010, nearly 36 percent of all abortions in the U.S. were performed on black children, even though blacks make up only 12.8 percent of the population. Another 21 percent of abortions were performed on Hispanics, and an additional seven percent on other minority races. A total of 64 percent of all abortions were on minority groups.

A disproportionate number of Planned Parenthood abortion mills, 79 percent, are in black and other minority neighborhoods; further evidence of the targeting of minorities by the abortion industry.

Women like Tonya Reeves and Lakisha Wilson are dying in these abortion mills. Abortion has also robbed men like boxer Floyd Mayweather of fatherhood.

Dangerous carcinogens contraceptives are harmful to women and are negatively impacting our society. The effects of these contraceptives lead to increased risk of various cancers, infertility, depression, suicidal ideation and suicide attempts, psychological problems, relational problems, and a host of other issues including death.

Abortion has also been linked to cancer and other female disorders.

Please connect the dots. Abortion and applied use of carcinogenic fertility blockers masquerading as “birth control” are acts that repeatedly result in the often painful deaths of a children in the womb and which can inflict lasting negative emotional, physical and psychological consequences on women is real torture. Yet some officials and experts – at home and abroad – continue to chose to ignore these facts, focusing instead to challenge the Prolife Community’s respect for the right to life and opposition to abortion.

The fight for religious freedom, the battle against the unjust HHS Mandate, the UN crusade against fertility, the decimating impact of abortion on the Black community; these are not isolated incidents. They are all part of a war on the rights of children, women, families and the global communities. God help us! This is war! Please pray with us and join us in the march towards victory.
