Staten Island, NY – Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life and a plaintiff in Priests for Life’s lawsuit challenging the HHS mandate, issued the following statement on the Supreme Court’s decision in Hobby Lobby v. Burwell.

“The Obama administration has repeatedly shown itself to be on the wrong side of religious freedom, on the wrong side of the Constitution, and on the wrong side of America. Today’s decision demonstrates that once again. Citizens, who have religious freedom individually, do not lose it when they act collectively. Today’s decision takes our nation in the right direction.

“But the Supreme Court, while correctly deciding that the Religious Freedom Restoration Act protects the religious freedom of the Green family and others who own their own businesses, does not resolve the problem that religious groups have with the so-called ‘accommodation.’ In the government’s view, that accommodation should satisfy our objections. But the ‘accommodation’ still requires a kind of cooperation that our faith does not allow. The Hobby Lobby decision only emphasizes the urgency and importance of pursuing Priests for Life’s own appeal against the HHS mandate.

“Mr. David Green, CEO of Hobby Lobby has stated, ‘As our Hobby Lobby case represents the concerns of businesses, so the Priests for Life case represents the concerns of the religious non-profit groups. Together, we stand against this injustice, and for the law of God.”

The text of today’s decision carries the following statement in the syllabus, which expresses exactly what we have been saying all along: “It is not for the Court to say that the religious beliefs of the plaintiffs are mistaken or unreasonable.”

“Religious freedom rights are human rights and the only way one can lose them is to cease being human. Priests for Life will continue to fight the Obama administration’s oppressive and unjust attempt to suppress religious liberty.”

Dr. Alveda King, full time Director of African American outreach for Priests for Life, plaintiff in Priests for Life’s lawsuit against the HHS mandate, and author of the new family book King Rules said of today’s decision –

“No one should have to deny God to obey a bureaucratic mandate – not in America. The Court has recognized that we are all free to worship God as we see fit and that we don’t lose that freedom when we build a business. This should apply fully to non-profits as well. The Secretary of Health and Human Services is not above the Lord.”

Bryan Kemper, Youth Outreach Director for Priests for Life, commented on the Hobby Lobby decision as well with the following statement:

“Today we celebrate freedom; we celebrate this ruling handed down by the Supreme Court in favor of religious freedom. SCOTUS has given us hope today as they upheld the rights of Americans to be free from the tyranny and oppression of our government when it comes to our faith.

“The Obama administration tried to force Hobby Lobby’s owners to violate their consciences and faith with the HHS mandate, an intrinsic evil that would force Americans to pay for abortion causing drugs. We at Stand True and Priests for Life celebrate the Court’s affirmation of Hobby Lobby’s religious rights and patiently await a ruling in our case.”

Staten Island, NY – Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, applauded today’s unanimous Supreme Court decision declaring Massachusetts’s law prohibiting pro-lifers from coming within 35 feet of an abortion clinic to be unconstitutional.

“The bubble zone of government imposed silence around abortion clinics has burst,” Fr. Pavone declared. “Today’s decision is a huge rip in the veil with which the abortion lobby has tried to cloak the truth about what abortion is and what abortion does to women. And the truth is that abortion destroys lives – physically and emotionally.

“The Supreme Court has struck a victory for free speech, for the Constitution, and for women and their babies.”

Fr. Pavone added, “I was happy to speak with Eleanor McCullen the other night in regard to this case and look forward to continuing to stand with her and so many other activists around the country who go to these abortion facilities day in and day out.

Alveda King, niece of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. and full-time director of African American Outreach for Priests for Life, stated, “It was wrong for governments to protect segregationists who denied the rights of others and denied the truth of equality. It’s wrong for governments today to protect abortionists who deny the rights of babies and deny the truth about abortion to women. The truth will not be ‘bubbled out.’ Let my people go!”

Bryan Kemper, Priests for Life Youth Outreach Director, said of today’s ruling, “The SCOTUS decision to strike down the Massachusetts bubble zone is a victory with great impact for pro-life youth. More and more youth are joining the fight to end abortion every day and outreach to abortion mills is an important aspect of this battle.”

Priests for Life will issue a more detailed statement about this decision after having analyzed it more fully.

Dr. Alveda King Salutes MLK Congressional Gold Medal Honor; Remembers KING RULES

Tuesday, June 24th, 2014

Martin and Coretta King

It is a blessing to pause today while on a book tour for the release of KING RULES to honor my uncle, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his wife Aunt Coretta, both recipients of a posthumous Congressional Gold Medal, awarded today during a special ceremony commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

I can’t join my cousins King Center CEO, Dr. Bernice A. King; Martin Luther King III and Dexter Scott King today as they join with Speaker John A. Boehner (R-OH), Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), Senator Carl Levin (D-MI), Congressman John Lewis (D-GA), Congressional Black Caucus Chair Marcia L. Fudge (D-OH), and other Senate and House leaders as they join in commemorating this historic occasion. I extend my prayers and best wished for this august occasion.

Responding to the announcement that her parents would receive the Congressional Gold Medal, Bernice, said “We are deeply honored that my father and mother, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Coretta Scott King, are being given this award in recognition of their tireless and sacrificial leadership to advance freedom and justice through nonviolence in our nation. It is fitting that the award will be presented by the U.S. Congress as we commemorate the 50th anniversary of the signing of Civil Rights Act of 1964, which was a cornerstone reform on America’s journey to racial justice.”

For more than two centuries the Congressional Gold Medal has been one of the most distinguished honors bestowed by the Congress. Since 1776, the award has also been given to such diverse individuals as George Washington; Mother Theresa; Dorothy Height; Rosa Parks; Thomas Edison; Sen. Robert F. Kennedy; President Nelson Mandela; the Dalai Lama; Dr. Jonas Salk and many others.

This honor is fitting as it gives credence to the dream of not only Uncle ML and Aunt Coretta, but to our entire family. I believe that if they were here today, Uncle ML and Aunt Coretta would be happy that their family is proud of them.

In my book KING RULES, with my grandfather Daddy King, my father AD King and my Uncle MLK on the cover, I share memories of my uncle and our family. I too share the dream and in this 21st Century I pronounce – I too have a dream, that white people, and black people, all ethnic groups, all political wings, all human beings will unite in “The Beloved Community,” and honor the sanctity of all life, born and unborn.

I am blessed to know that there seems to be a new awakening across political lines that the sanctity of all life, marriage and family are called to a high yet not unreachable standard. For too long, there has been a great divide between America’s predominant political parties, confusing Civil Rights with moral preferences. It is encouraged to hear about progress for life and family across political lines.

It is with joy that I note a recent announcement from a democrat:

For example, African American Democrat Louisiana State Representative Katrina Jackson, the author of the state’s new law requiring abortionists to have local hospital admitting privileges, said in an interview, “The No. 1 genocide in the African-American community, and why we’re becoming a minority of minorities, is because most of our babies are dying in the womb from abortions.” She added, “I’m very passionate, especially when you’re looking at the African-American community, because those in the pro-choice community have been attempting to sell us on abortion being a way out for women who can’t afford to have their baby.”

It is time to break the chains.

Juneteenth, Civil Rights Anniversary, Independence Day: Get on Board for Life!

Thursday, June 19th, 2014

Civil Righs Begin in the Womb

Every year on June 19th, African-Americans celebrate “Juneteenth,” the anniversary of the day slavery was abolished in Texas in 1865.

Two centuries later, we have yet to connect the dots between the denial of African-Americans’ human rights through slavery to the denial of unborn children’s human rights through abortion. There is definitely a parallel between the Dred Scott and Roe v. Wade decisions.

June 19th is “Juneteenth,” marking the day in 1865 when two and a half years later word finally got to a group of slaves in Texas that they were free.

Yes, that was more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed by President Lincoln.

This wryly historic date is celebrated around the country today. While often dwarfed by the following July 4 celebrations, the event has all the trappings of a 4th of July party; and with good reason.

Independence and emancipation are very similar. We just had two parts of the country, and at different times, both with opposing beliefs, yet with varying people groups and ethnicities, fighting for freedom in different ways. But freedom for everybody ends up being the same.

And lest we forget, this year “sandwiched in” between Juneteenth and Independence Day will be July 2, the 50th Anniversary of the US Civil Rights Act. Let’s remember to stand against the harmful impact of abortion and carcinogenic birth control/fertility blockers that kill babies and their mothers. FREE THE BABIES! Let them live; it’s their civil right!

As Director of African American Outreach and a member of the National Black ProLife Coalition I get to work with some very special people who have devoted their lives to the abolishment of abortion. Two such people are my good friends Walter Hoye, II and Ryan Bomberger.

I’d like to share a blog from Walter and graphics designed by Ryan:

2014 JuneteenthLESSON: “The Negro Is The Key Of The Situation”

“The passion of selfishness, murder and rebellion are fired by slavery; the physical strength of rebellion is found less in the attenuated arm of the slaveholder, than in the sinewy arm of steel, which wields, without wages, the hoe and spade on the plantation. All this is plain. The very stomach of this rebellion is the Negro in the condition of a slave. Arrest that hoe in the hands of the Negro, and you smite rebellion in the very seat of its life. Change the status of the slave from bondage to freedom, and you change the rebels into loyal citizens. The Negro is the key of the situation, the pivot upon which the whole rebellion turns.” — Frederick Douglass, Douglass’ Monthly, July, 1861 11

“This war, disguise it as they may, is virtually nothing more or less than perpetual slavery against universal freedom. The American people and Government at Washington may refuse to recognize it for a time, but the inexorable logic of events will force it upon them in the end, that the war now being waged in this land is a war for and against slavery.” — Frederick Douglass 12

“Sound policy, not less than humanity, demands the instant liberation of every slave in the rebel states.” — Frederick Douglass, Douglass’ Monthly, July, 1861 13

BIG ABORTION is a business. A BILLION DOLLAR business. 14 A business that views women and babies as commodities. A business where highly trained and licensed physicians and nurses, clean and well equipped medical facilities represent a drain on profits. A business where complying with the same public health and safety requirements as other surgical facilities negatively impacts the bottom line. A business where the “SUPER COIL“, a device inserted into a woman’s uterus, comprised of plastic razors spring loaded into a ball, coated into a gel, so that they would remain closed until the woman’s body temperature melts the gel, releasing the razors to cut up the mother’s fetus into pieces small enough to be expelled violently from her body is a good idea. 15 A business where regular, legally mandated unannounced inspections by the Department of Health Services only serve as barriers to women seeking abortions and is viewed as bad policy. 16 A business where a FATAL HEART ATTACK immediately following an abortion procedure is a therapeutic complication. 17 A business where a woman can bleed for over five hours after a botched abortion procedure before emergency services are called, is still in business. 18 A business where an abortion procedure can be botched and blown so badly that not even an award winning trauma center can stop the hemorrhaging and remove the remaining body parts of the woman’s baby from her uterus in time to save her life. 19 A business where parents do not even possess a right to be notified that their minor daughter is undergoing such procedures. 20 A business backed by the government of the United States of America to the tune of over half a billion tax dollars. 21 A business that enjoys being publicly praised and blessed by the President of the United States of America while he criticizes state legislatures that have enacted strict health codes on abortion providers to ensure the health and safety of women. 22 A business that has aborted 30% of the entire generation under 47 making up the biggest single reason for our sluggish economy. 23 A business that has already cost us over $50 TRILLION DOLLARS in lost Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and this cost to future generations of the American public just keeps growing every year. 24 A business founded by a well documented Klu Klux Klan speaker and one of the architects of the now infamous 1939 Negro Project that hired Black preachers to introduce birth control as a health option for Black women. 25 A business where its LARGEST ABORTION PROVIDER targets both the Black and Latino populations by locating 79% of its surgical abortion facilities within walking distance of Black and Latino communities. 26 A business that routinely performs 55% to 56% of its surgical abortions on Black and Latino women. 27 A business where Black American women with prior induced abortion (IA) experiences have triple the risk of an early preterm birth (EPB) and four times the risk of an extremely early preterm birth (XPB) as non-Black American women and are viewed as collateral damage. 28 A business that has watched the TOTAL FERTILITY RATE of Black Americans drop from 3.0 in 1970 to below the POPULATION REPLACEMENT LEVEL of 2.1 to 1.8 by 2012. 29 A business that we need to end before it ends us, all of us.

King Rules - High ResBook Debut:
Today, June 10, 2014

kingrulesbook.com

Dear Readers, this blog hits close to home for me today, so close in fact that I named the first chapter in my new book “Make Home a Priority.” Some of you have been asking me for years, “what was it like growing up with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as your uncle?”

Well dear readers, this book is just for you! Not only do I write about my Uncle ML, but you will meet my daddy AD King, my Granddaddy MLK, Sr., and so many other family members who helped to make sure that I grew up in “The King Family Legacy,” full of faith, hope, and love.

Please take a moment to visit the Thomas Nelson website: kingrulesbook.com to discover not only what the book is about, but also take a look through the photo album where you will have a peek into some precious memories. There are also some endorsements from some friends you might know.

Finally, this is a “how to book” in that many of the principles in the book about finding peace, love, and joy while fighting for justice for everyone, from conception until natural death and everything between.

My friends the Honorable J. C. Watts and Father Frank Pavone graciously opened and closed the chapters for me in their foreward and afterword. All in all, having been inspired by so many questions, I went on a quest to find the answers and discovered that the King Rules were with me all the time.

God bless you!

Cardinal Dziwisz Dedicates Priests for Life Ministry to Saint John Paul II

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2014

PriestsForLife

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Date: June 3, 2014

Contact: Leslie Palma
347-286-7277

NEW YORK, NY — As initially announced following the canonization of St. John Paul II, Priests for Life has dedicated our ministry and organization to his special protection.

This was carried out in two separate ceremonies during the week of May 19. At the monthly meeting of the entire pastoral team of Priests for Life on Wednesday, May 21, this dedication was made at the conclusion of Mass by Father Frank Pavone, National Director. But two days prior to that, Fr. Frank, along with Janet Morana, Executive Director, and several staff, were privileged to visit with Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz, who was visiting in the United States. Cardinal Dziwisz was the longtime secretary and personal assistant to John Paul II.

The Cardinal himself prayed the prayer of dedication of the ministry of Priests for Life to the protection of St. John Paul II, and in that ceremony, the Cardinal presented to Fr. Frank and to the entire team of Priests for Life a first class relic of St. John Paul II.

In presenting the relic, the Cardinal said, “This relic of St. John Paul II is his blood, blood that was taken on the Saturday that he died. This blood is ever a symbol of love. May it signify our love for the family and for life, in defense above all of the lives of unborn children.”

The visit with the Cardinal was arranged in order to interview him for our Defending Life series on EWTN. The principal theme of the interview was the “Be Not Afraid” John Paul II International Center, established by Cardinal Dziwisz in Krakow in 2006.

The Center is meant to create a living memory of John Paul II, to preserve and spread his legacy, and to promote the values by which he lived and which he inspired us to follow. Priests for Life is working to spread awareness of the Center, and of the foundation which supports it here in the United States, the Friends of St. John Paul the Second “Be Not Afraid” Center, Inc., based in Linden, New Jersey (see www.JohnPaul2USA.org).

Father Frank worked at the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for the Family under the pontificate of John Paul II. The Pontifical Council for the Family fosters the pro-life work of the Catholic Church. Fr. Frank stated, “I was privileged to converse with Pope John Paul II multiple times about the defense of life against abortion and other threats. The core of his teachings and example was and remains the dignity of the human person. In promoting the John Paul II International Center, we at Priests for Life obviously want to give primary attention to this core teaching of St. John Paul II. All who do pro-life work need his intercession today more than ever, both to withstand the attacks that come from all directions and also to avoid the temptation to think that somehow the defense of the unborn should be less of a priority than other issues. Both for the Church and the state, there is one moral imperative today that stands above all the rest: to end abortion.

“I had the opportunity to discuss with John Paul II on multiple occasions the work of Priests for Life, and he expressed strong support and encouragement,” Fr. Frank explained. “Given that personal contact with him, and given the priority he placed on the defense of the right to life, it is highly appropriate that we place our entire ministry and activity under his special patronage.”

A video of the dedication with Cardinal Dziwisz and Father Pavone is available at

Another Cry for Gun Control Overlooks the Greater Problem of Our Society’s Culture of Death Attitude

Monday, June 2nd, 2014

140602 blog image

With the news of yet another mass murder, this time from a celebrity shooter, comes more cries from those seeking gun control.

The shooter Elliot Rodgers is yet another example of the symptoms that plague our world. The son of an Assistant Director of the award winning sans gratuitously violent film HUNGER GAMES went on a violent stabbing/shooting spree in what was an apparent cry for help gone wrong.

Once again “The Elephant in the Room” is hiding in plain sight while the obvious is being overlooked. Yes we lament the death of Rodgers’ victims while at the same time we make no accepted outcry over the deaths of the thousands of innocent people being killed right here in America every day. Millions of babies have died by abortion. Hundreds of mothers are subsequently injured by abortion; some die. And a significant amount of lament is sorely lacking.

Yet in the case of Rodgers, a puzzled mainstream media is asking: “Could it be that the media hype is due to the Hollywood link? Rich white men? Mental illness?”

Seriously? Is anyone connecting the dots here? These above are possible symptoms; not causes of outbreaks senseless violence.

People are creating mayhem on victims they do not know. In the streets, in the schools, in the dorm rooms, in the form of human trafficking, in the hospitals and in the wombs of women.

Not just with guns and knives, but with scalpels and forceps and drugs and devices. Added to the growing list of victims of senseless violence are young babies in the womb, their tortured mothers, the sick and the elderly.

Yes, Rodger used guns, but he also stabbed people. So will we again push for gun control? What about knife control? And what if he had choked his victims. Will we advocate for strangulation control?

The problem is not the weapons Rodger used; the problem is the attitude towards the lack of demanding the right to dignity of life in our society.

Instead this seems to be the prevailing mindset of today: Is someone standing in your way? Kill that person. Someone has what you want? Do whatever you have to get it from that human being; even if it means murder. Another person is interfering with your life’s plans? Abort your baby. Someone sick or old? Euthanize.

We see from this mindset that for many, life has become disposable in our society. As Mother Teresa once said, “The greatest destroyer of peace is abortion because if a mother can kill her own child what is left for me to kill you and you to kill me? There is nothing between.”

Peace in America has been destroyed in the name of “choice;” a “choice” that has left millions of children dead and many women, mothers dead or wounded. As a result of the 1973 Roe vs. Wade decision which brought legal abortion and the 1963 action removing prayer from our schools, we are reaping a harvest of lawless violence. Yet people are still asking “why?”

Last week, May 28 marked the International Day of Action for Women’s Health. While many pro-aborts planned to take to Twitter to promote abortions as healthcare, pro-life activists hijacked the hashtags #WomensHealth and #May28 to tweet the truth about abortion. As most would agree, abortion is NOT healthcare. Abortion is mind numbing death care. So are the harmful carcinogenic cancer/stroke/heart attack causing carcinogenic so called birth control products; not health care but fertility blocking death care.

Pro-life activists have been accused of raging a war on women. Nothing can be further from the truth. We want to protect them both, the mother and the baby.

Yet our protection is being censored while our children’s lives, minds and souls are under attack.

Before Rodger’s shooting rampage he posted a video on YouTube in which he sat in the driver’s seat of a car and revealed his plans to “slaughter the hottest sorority girls at UCSB.” In a blog post, Rodger wrote: “Being lonely in a beautiful place like Santa Barbara is truly a horrible experience. As I’ve said many times, a beautiful environment can be the darkest hell if you have to experience it all alone, especially while having to watch other men walking around with their girlfriends.”

He hated women. He had been hurt by their refusals and he wanted to pay them back. It was all about him; his feelings; his “horrible experience;” His personal “hell.” He raged a war on women in the Isla Vista community. And his rampage also resulted in other casualties.

Is what Rodgers did really so different from the war on women and their baby boys and girls that is being waged by abortionists and the abortion industry? Although they say they don’t hate women, they too hurt women and children for their own gain. For them it may not a vengeful shooting or stabbing act but the result is the same; a mass war on women and babies that leaves casualties none the less.

2012 was a record year for this type of violence; abortions and mass murders. Blaming guns, white men, white privilege, Hollywood, mental illness, poverty, and only God knows what else.

Yet the mass murders such as Rodgers’ spree, school bombings, etc. have been occurring at an accelerated rate that parallels the removal of prayer from schools and the a scenario of the abortion history.

Mass murders increased when prayer was taken out of school and abortion was legalized. A godless nation is becoming a soulless nation.

When pro-life activists who care about children and their parents are said to be waging a war on women; when dismembering an unborn child while it is still in his/her mother’s womb is called healthcare; when the elderly and sick are being euthanized in growing numbers; then I ask you, “what is left but for you to kill me and me to kill you?”

Let us pray for repentance and revival. All is not lost. May God raise up a fearless “Generation Z,” a new beginning with warriors of old uniting with millennial champions of justice so that the killings will subside and our land can be healed.
