Priests for Life

August 11, 2013

Shandon, Ca – Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, issued the following statement today.

“Our Priests for Life team learned with sadness yesterday of the passing of Judge William P. Clark, Jr. This was a man who served our nation constantly, whether in the key positions he held in President Ronald Reagan’s cabinet, or in the countless ways in which, behind the scenes, he defended the very principles on which the nation was founded.

“He was a great friend of Priests for Life and especially of our administrative team. We got to know him in the late 1990’s and he invited us frequently to his ranch. He opened his property in Shandon, and the beautiful chapel he built on it (“Chapel Hill”), to the pro-life movement, and several times a year we hosted private retreats there for national pro-life leaders. These retreats built up the unity of the movement and enabled leaders to come together in confidential settings to build up relationships of trust, which led to fruitful collaboration. We look forward to the continuation of these retreats.

“Judge Clark served as national security adviser. But along with his role in that position under President Reagan, he fought for our nation’s security by fighting for the right to life, on which all other rights and security depend. He understood the priority of this issue, and lent his advice, encouragement, and personal involvement to the initiatives that we in the pro-life leadership would undertake.

“He and his wife Joan made a public profession of promises as a Missionaries of the Gospel of Life, which is the pro-life spirituality program of Priests for Life.

“It will be my honor, along with our Executive Director, Janet Morana, and our Vice-Chairman, Anthony DeStefano, to represent so many of our colleagues in the pro-life movement as we participate in the funeral on Wednesday of our great friend and national hero, Judge William Clark.”

STATEN ISLAND, NY – Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, the Church’s largest pro-life ministry, announced today the beginning of the “Gospel of Life Pilgrimage” to Rome.

“For many months, Priests for Life has been announcing and preparing for the special Day of Life which is an official part of the Catholic Church’s Year of Faith. The Church wants to make it clear that to defend, welcome and nurture the gift of human life is integral to the faith. To say ‘Yes’ to Jesus Christ is to say ‘Yes’ to life,” Fr. Pavone explained.

On Saturday, June 15, there will be several educational seminars and prayer events sponsored by the Vatican, and on Sunday, June 16, a Mass with Pope Francis in Saint Peter’s Square. The pilgrimage Priests for Life has organized has a full capacity number of 150 people who travel to Rome tonight and will have Masses, tours, and talks with Fr. Frank Pavone, Janet Morana, Teresa Tomeo, and Steve and Janet Ray in the days prior to the Vatican events.

“As faithful from around the world gather with the Pope this weekend, one of our key prayer intentions will be for the healing of all mothers and fathers who have been wounded by abortion,” said Janet Morana, who co-founded the Silent No More Awareness Campaign. “The Gospel of Life is the Gospel of Mercy.”

“I hope all of our Catholic Radio Family will follow us on Ave Maria and EWTN radio, as we report on the events as well as pro-life efforts and issues around the world that will be discussed at the conference,” Teresa Tomeo said.

During the pilgrimage, people will be able to see daily updates and commentary at GospelOfLifePilgrimage.com and hear Ms. Tomeo’s radio updates. Priests for Life encourages families, groups, and parishes to join in prayer with the Holy Father and all those who will be gathered in Rome this coming weekend, that the gift of human life may be ever more respected and protected. Priests for Life Welcomes Year of Faith; Urges Renewed Proclamation of Gospel of Life

Thursday, October 11th, 2012

As the Church begins her observance of the Year of Faith today, Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, announced initiatives to take place this year that will highlight the integral connections between the faith and the commitment to the pro-life cause.

In a statement released today (see below), Fr. Pavone stated, “In his encyclical letter Evangelium Vitae (The Gospel of Life, 1995), Blessed John Paul II reminded us, ‘The Gospel of God’s love for man, the Gospel of the dignity of the person and the Gospel of life are a single and indivisible Gospel’ (EV, 2). Therefore, as the Church calls her children to embrace and proclaim with new vigor and joy the Gospel of Christ, this is at the same time a call to witness to, and to build, a Culture of Life.”

The pastoral team of Priests for Life, which leads a worldwide family of interrelated ministries including Rachel’s Vineyard and the Silent No More Awareness Campaign, as well as the African-American outreach led by Dr. Alveda King, niece of Martin Luther King, Jr., will carry out a number of catechetical and other efforts to highlight the theme of the connection between faith and pro-life.

As part of the observance, Priests for Life will lead a pilgrimage to Rome from June 10-17, 2013 in order to take part in a celebration on June 16 with the Holy Father in Saint Peter’s Square focused on the sanctity of life. The event is among the official items on the calendar for the Year of Faith released by the Vatican.

In the Year of Faith, Believe and Proclaim the Gospel of Life

Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, issued the following statement today as the Church begins her celebration of the Year of Faith:

The worldwide family of Priests for Life (an international Association of the Faithful) welcomes the Year of Faith, which begins today, Thursday, October 11, 2012, the twentieth anniversary of the publication of The Catechism of the Catholic Church and the fiftieth anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council.

Priests for Life, like the whole Church, is irrevocably committed to proclaiming Jesus Christ as the hope, the Savior, and the life of the world.

In his encyclical letter Evangelium Vitae (The Gospel of Life, 1995), Blessed John Paul II reminded us, “The Gospel of God’s love for man, the Gospel of the dignity of the person and the Gospel of life are a single and indivisible Gospel” (EV, 2).

Therefore, as the Church calls her children to embrace and proclaim with new vigor and joy the Gospel of Christ, this is at the same time a call to witness to, and to build, a Culture of Life.

This is why one of the official events that the Vatican has announced in the calendar for the Year of Faith will be a celebration with the Holy Father focused on the theme of the sanctity of life, to take place in Saint Peter’s Square on Sunday, June 16, 2013.

Given that fact, Priests for Life announces today that during the Year of Faith, we will implement a number of efforts to help the faithful — both clergy and laity — to understand and teach the integral connections between saying “Yes” to Christ and saying “Yes” to life.

In particular,

a) We will make available in new formats to the clergy and laity our reflections on the readings of the liturgy for each Sunday and how those readings connect with the theme of life. Such reflections are available in written form at www.priestsforlife.org/liturgy and in video form at www.YouTube.com/priestsforlife.

b) We will initiate a series of catechetical resources that show the integral connection between various aspects of our faith and the call to defend the most vulnerable among us, the unborn. This series will start with a new resource for the Advent-Christmas season called Christmas for the Unborn.

c) We will present special seminars and study days, through the travels of our pastoral team to parishes, seminaries, conferences and local communities, focusing on how the pro-life message and movement are integral to the new evangelization.

d) We will lead a national pilgrimage to Rome from June 10-17, 2013 in order to take part, with the Holy Father, in the special celebration for the Gospel of Life on Sunday, June 16. (See www.priestsforlife.org/pilgrimage for more details.)

e) We will conduct a multi-faceted media campaign, via radio, television, and internet, to highlight the ways in which embracing the faith means embracing life, with special focus on how the witness of the Gospel leads us to serve those who are pregnant and in need, and to bring healing to those wounded by abortion.

f) We will expand our educational efforts in the arena of political responsibility, especially in these first few weeks of the Year of Faith, showing how the witness of faith demands that we vote in a way that affirms rather than denies the Gospel.

g) We will renew our call to the faithful to see the pro-life movement as not simply a cause but as a spirituality, an aspect of discipleship, and therefore we will invite them to undertake our program of training in pro-life spirituality and to become Missionaries of the Gospel of Life. (See www.MissionariesoftheGospelofLife.org.)

The implementation of these initiatives would not be possible except for the dedication of our pastoral team, who lead our interrelated family of ministries: Fr. Denis Wilde, O.S.A, Associate Director; Fr. Victor Salomon, Director of Hispanic Outreach; fulltime associates Fr. Scott Daniels, O.P. and Fr. Walter Quinn, O.S.A.; Janet Morana, Executive Director and co-founder of the Silent No More Awareness Campaign; Dr. Alveda King, Director of African-American Outreach; Dr. Theresa Burke, founder of Rachel’s Vineyard Ministries; Kevin Burke; Bryan Kemper, Director of Youth Outreach; and Marie Smith, fulltime associate of our Gospel of Life Ministries and director of the Parliamentary Network for Critical Issues.

Respect Life Month Brings Rich, Inter-related Themes This Year

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2012

Happy October! And what a month it will be! There are various powerful observances and events this month whose themes reinforce one another and the overall mission of the Church on behalf of human life.

It is, first of all, Respect Life Month. It’s a time to let the pulpits roar with the Church’s Biblical witness to the sacredness of life.

And the appropriateness of that roaring is accented this month by the worldwide Synod of Bishops that begins on October 7, and the Church’s Year of Faith that begins on October 11th, the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council.

The Synod of Bishops will discuss the “New Evangelization,” the proclamation of the faith with new vigor and new methods. It is for the purpose of embracing anew our faith in Christ that the Year of Faith is being observed. And all of this is, of course, why Churches exist, why religious freedom is important, and why preachers preach.

Moreover, the pro-life message is not something we “add on” to our faith as a hobby or extra-curricular activity. It is at the very heart and foundation of our faith. As I put it in the memo I submitted to the Vatican on behalf of Priests for Life in preparation for this year’s Synod of Bishops,

“The Gospel of Christ is the Gospel of Life. The good news of the redemption of the human person in Christ is news about how he unites our human nature with His Divine Nature. The Gospel is precisely about the exaltation of human dignity in Christ. In proclaiming the hope that Christ offers humanity, namely, that he will sit us with him on his throne (cf. Rev. 3:21), the Church cannot then ignore the phenomenon by which that same humanity is thrown in the garbage. Were she to do that, her very proclamation of the Gospel would be compromised and rendered unpersuasive.

“When a society forgets the Creator, the creature becomes unintelligible. The culture of death is precisely a sign that new evangelization is needed. New Evangelization includes, at its core, the proclamation of the sanctity of life.”

We proclaim that message, furthermore, in these weeks that lead up to the most important election of our lifetime, an election that will decide the fate of countless unborn children, and the status of religious liberty in America.

Because the stakes are so high, hundreds of pastors this year will take part in “Pulpit Freedom Sunday,” in which they will preach sermons that apply Biblical standards to political candidates, and will send those sermons to the IRS to challenge them to clarify the restrictions on Churches against political speech. This has occurred for several years now. In fact, we can do much more than we think we can, but it’s not a bad idea to challenge those restrictions in court.

So, welcome, October! As we enter Autumn, bring a Springtime to our Faith, to our pro-life zeal, and to our informed, responsible citizenship

Priests for Life Welcomes Day of Life Celebration; Pilgrimage to Rome Planned

Thursday, June 21st, 2012

STATEN ISLAND, NY – Priests for Life will lead a pilgrimage to Rome in 2013 to help celebrate “The Year of Faith.” The group will be at the Vatican on June 16, which the Vatican has announced will be a day dedicated to the Gospel of Life. Special events in the presence of Pope Benedict XVI are planned on that special day.

“This initiative of the Vatican is an exciting development which will give believers around the world the opportunity to express, in union with the Holy Father, that our proclamation of the Faith cannot be credible without a vigorous defense of human life,” said Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life. “The Faith tells us that our destiny is to be on the throne with Christ (cf. Rev. 3:21). We cannot persuasively offer this promise while ignoring those who are thrown in the garbage.”

The June 11-18 pilgrimage will be led by Father Pavone, along with Janet Morana, executive director of Priests for Life; Catholic author and journalist Teresa Tomeo, and Catholic tour guide leader Steve Ray.

“Priests for Life invites all who are committed to the cause of life to join us on our 2013 pilgrimage to Rome. We also will advocate that this day of life be an observance of the Church each and every year,” Fr. Pavone stated.

For information on the pilgrimage, visit www.priestsforlife.org/pilgrimage/index.aspx.
