NEW YORK — Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, issued the following statement today regarding the U.S. Supreme Court decision not to hear heartbeat bills from North Dakota and Arkansas that would protect babies from abortion once a heartbeat can be detected.

“Anyone who still questions when life begins has to at least admit that when a human heart is beating, life has begun. The Supreme Court’s unfortunate decision not to review the North Dakota or Arkansas cases regarding heartbeat laws means continued delay in protecting those beating hearts. In the meantime, we at Priests for Life are making our voice heard in the Supreme Court regarding the Texas case, which will be argued on March 2 and in which we are submitting a friend of the court brief. Moreover, we have the court’s attention in our own Priests for Life case against the HHS mandate, which the Court has accepted and will argue in March as well.”

STATEN ISLAND, NY – Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, today issued a statement encouraging North Dakota Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem to appeal the ruling of a district court judge who held that the state’s “heartbeat” abortion law violated Roe v. Wade.

“North Dakota led the states in courage and compassion when its lawmakers passed and Governor Jack Dalrymple signed legislation to protect babies with a detectable heartbeat,” said Fr. Pavone. “I was proud to be there in Bismarck, with pro-life activists from around the state, to thank the Governor and the legislator for those actions. That leadership is needed now to continue the defense of the heartbeat law and innocent lives. I earnestly hope that Attorney General Stenehjem will take his defense of the babies to the next step, the U.S. Court of Appeals.”

North Dakota’s “heartbeat” law, which was enjoined last year by federal Judge Daniel Hovland before it went into effect, would bar almost any abortion of a baby that’s found to have a detectable heartbeat.

STATEN ISLAND, NY – Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, issued the following statement today following the enactment of a ban on abortions past 12 weeks in Arkansas.

“The Arkansas Legislature has done the right thing. Governors aren’t governing their people if they aren’t protecting them. One of the most striking and effective statements over the years by the pro-life movement has been ‘Abortion stops a beating heart.’ It’s still true, and it’s about time the law starts catching up with that fact.”
