STATEN ISLAND, NY — Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, said the case of McCullen v. Coakley, which is being argued today before the U.S. Supreme Court, illustrates how “abortion perverts justice.”

“So called ‘bubble zone’ laws are the fruit of abortion’s poisonous tree,” stated Fr. Pavone. “They violate pro-lifers’ First Amendment free speech rights in order to protect the profits of abortionists who violate the right to life of unborn babies. They are a wrong committed to perpetuate another wrong.”

“It’s plainly discriminatory for the government to say that abortion supporters can speak freely at a given place, but pro-lifers cannot,” added Fr. Pavone. “Then again, bubble zone laws and abortion are based on the same illicit notion, namely that some people have rights and some people don’t.”

In McCullen v. Coakley, the plaintiffs are challenging a Massachusetts law that bars pro-life sidewalk counselors from coming within 35 feet of an abortion clinic entrance.

Fr. Pavone added, “When a person has a reasonable chance of saving a life, it is not only morally permissible to break the law regarding the bubble-zone, but it is virtuous to do so. If this law is not struck down, I’ll come and violate it myself.”

Fr. Pavone Comments on Record-Setting Closings of Abortion Mills

Friday, December 27th, 2013

Priests for Life

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Date: December 27, 2013

347-286-7277

NEW YORK, NY — Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, and Troy Newman, Director of Operation Rescue, have announced that the number of abortion mill closures in 2013 has risen to at least 87.

Fr. Pavone said, “We have been teaching for the last two decades that abortion collapses under its own weight, and that the weak point is precisely the abortion mill. In this year when the horrifying nature of the abortion industry came to light in the Gosnell trial and when so many state laws increased the standards for abortion mills, we see that coming true more than ever.”

According to the tracking done by Operation Rescue, there are now 582 abortion clinics operating in the country today, a drop of 12 percent in 2013 alone, and a 73 percent drop from 1991, when there were some 2,176 abortuaries in the United States.

“These numbers show that the pro-life movement is gaining ground and that the abortion industry is collapsing – mostly due to its own negligence and greed, which has been exposed by their unwillingness and inability to comply with even the most rudimentary safety standards,” said Troy Newman, president of Operation Rescue.

Noting that Operation Rescue works closely with Priests for Life on many life-saving projects –particularly the closing of a clinic in Birmingham, AL, that was performing abortions illegally, Newman said, “Both groups share the credit for these awesome statistics.”

Father Pavone said the clinic closings have energized the whole pro-life movement.

“The lives of babies and their mothers are saved when every clinic closes,” he said. “Knowing there are so many children having birthdays in 2014 who might never have been born convinces us that applying pressure to clinic operators and abortionists is a vital part of our work to end abortion.”

Cardinal John O’Connor Institute for the Pro-life Training of the Clergy

Friday, December 27th, 2013

Priests for Life

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Date: December 26, 2013

347-286-7277

NEW YORK — Dr. Bernard Nathanson, a key architect of the abortion industry, said publicly to gatherings of clergy, after he became pro-life, that he and his pro-abortion colleagues in the 1960′s and 70′s “would never have gotten away with what we did if you (the clergy) had been united, purposeful, and strong.”

The key reason Priests for Life got started was the conviction that today’s proponents of the culture of death will still not get away with what they are doing if we become more united, purposeful, and strong.

Cardinal O’Connor was instrumental in the genesis and growth of Priests for Life, having released Fr. Frank Pavone in 1993 to do this work full time. In a letter to Fr. Frank, the Cardinal wrote, “I know of no effort more noble, more timely or important than the recruitment of our clergy in the cause of life.” (March 21, 1996).

Mindful, then, of the teaching and example of Cardinal O’Connor and Dr. Nathanson in this regard, Priests for Life intends to redouble its efforts in 2014 to train the clergy. With the support of Cardinal O’Connor’s sister, Mary Ward, we are launching the Cardinal John O’Connor Institute for the Pro-life Training of the Clergy, which will include a re-packaging of many of the activities Priests for Life has done all along, together with some new initiatives.

These activities, which will span all denominations across the Body of Christ, will include the following:

– Training seminars for seminarians, deacons, and priests, in which our team will travel to seminaries and dioceses, and present a flexible package of presentations ranging in length anywhere from a luncheon talk to a seminar of several days, and covering the themes of preaching, counseling, and pro-life strategies and activities that can be carried out and promoted in parishes, schools, and other Catholic institutions.

– Training in pro-life spirituality, with retreats and days of recollection available for seminarians, deacons, and priests.

– A new book on Preaching the Pro-life Message, containing, among other things, answers to the most common fears about addressing abortion, and homily hints based on the readings of every Sunday of the three-year liturgical cycle. These homily hints are also available for each of these Sundays in video format on You Tube, as well as in a smartphone application.

– Special training days offered for clergy at our New York headquarters of Priests for Life, as well as at our Washington DC office, right behind the Supreme Court. Sessions in Washington will include special opportunities to interact with practicing Christians in Congress and to learn more about how to support pro-life legislation.

– Specialized training in post-abortion healing, making use of our expert team who developed Rachel’s Vineyard Ministries, which operates under the umbrella of Priests for Life, and also making use of the insights of our Silent No More Awareness Campaign.

– Specialized training in the healing of former abortion clinic workers and abortionists, based on the research and experience of the “Society of Centurions,” a worldwide organization of former abortionists, who have gone through healing based on the model developed by Canadian psychiatrist Dr. Philip Ney, foremost expert in the psychology of abortionists.

– Specialized training in how to dialogue with advocates and practitioners of abortion, and show to them the face of Christ, inviting them to conversion based on a recognition that our belief in the sanctity of every human life includes theirs, too.

The Cardinal’s sister, Mary Ward, recently said of this effort, “The pro-life legacy of my brother, Cardinal John O’Connor, is well known. Part of that legacy was his work in helping Priests for Life get started, and his support of Fr. Frank Pavone, whom he ordained and later released to help inspire and motivate clergy across the country. This new Institute started by Priests for Life, and named after the Cardinal, will continue to plant his vision and passion for the defense of life in the hearts and minds of many priests for decades to come. This work deserves the support of all in the Church.”

Albuquerque, Babies Need Your Vote!

Friday, November 15th, 2013

Please join Priests for Life in our prayers and efforts to further protect children in the womb by encouraging people in Albuquerque, New Mexico to vote for and support the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act that will prevent babies from experience the pain and horrors that abortion brings inside the womb of pregnant women. If passed, hundreds of babies will be rescued.

We wouldn’t do to cats and dogs what abortion is doing to kill little babies in the womb. We must act now to do the decent thing, speak up and vote for those who cannot speak for themselves.

131115 Blog Image2Early voting for this measure ended today; Father Frank Pavone, National Director of PFL is urging everyone who has not yet voted for the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act in Albuquerque to make sure they get to the polls on Tuesday. And he is urging every American to join Priests for Life in contacting every U.S. Senator on the record to ask how they would vote on a similar ban on late-term abortion because such a bill was introduced in the Senate this month by Sen. Lindsey Graham.

Father Stephen Imbarrato, who is part of the Priests for Life team as a Priest Consultant, and is founder of Project Defending Life, is in Albuquerque working for the passage of the bill.

“We are facing a well-financed pro-death force,” Father Imbarrato said. “Planned Parenthood has put huge amounts of money into this battle because they know if we win and they lose, this initiative will spread to cities all over the country. We are mounting a true grassroots get-out- the vote strategy focusing on the churches and people of faith.”

131115 Blog Image3In a 1967 Christmas sermon, my uncle, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said: “The next thing we must be concerned about if we are to have peace on earth and good will toward men is the nonviolent affirmation of the sacredness of all human life. …Man is a child of God, made in His image, and therefore must be respected as such….And when we truly believe in the sacredness of human personality, we won’t exploit people, we won’t trample over people with the iron feet of oppression, we won’t kill anybody.”

In a few days, many will celebrate Thanksgiving, and Christmas will swiftly follow. One of the greatest gifts we can give to babies in the womb and their mothers is the gift of life. After all, John 3:16 teaches us that God so loved the world that He gave us the gift of Jesus Christ. God says to choose life. We can help give the gift of life and love by protecting little babies in the womb from the pain and destruction of abortion.

Father Pavone Urges Protection for Albuquerque Babies from Late-Term Abortion

Friday, November 15th, 2013

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Date: November 15, 2013

NEW YORK, NY – Early voting on a proposal to protect unborn children in Albuquerque from late-term abortion ended today, and those who have not yet voted can go to the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 19. Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, issued the following statement today in support of the measure:

“Late-term abortion has been breaking bad in Albuquerque for too long. The vote to protect children from this outrage against humanity is crucial.

“Pro-aborts have resorted to desperate measures to protect their investment in barbaric, dismemberment abortions, illegally hacking the web site of the organization supporting the ban and having a Planned Parenthood phone bank in New York calling voters in New Mexico. Those opposing the ban realize that what happens in Albuquerque next week can happen soon in Germantown, MD, Boulder, CO, and in other places where the ‘right’ to an abortion includes the right to tear a human child — who can feel pain — limb from limb in the sixth month of pregnancy and beyond. Support is already building to pass this measure in neighboring Valencia County, New Mexico, to prevent Albuquerque abortionists from simply changing their address.”

Father Pavone urged everyone who has not yet voted for the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act in Albuquerque to make sure they get to the polls on Tuesday. And he urged every American to join Priests for Life in getting every U.S. Senator on the record about how they would vote on a similar ban on late-term abortion was introduced in the Senate this month by Sen. Lindsey Graham.

Father Pavone also urged people to see exactly what these measures are protecting children from, by viewing the medical diagrams of dismemberment abortion at www.priestsforlife.org/resources/medical/de.jpg, and sending this link to others via email, website links, and social media.

Thank you Senator Graham

Monday, November 4th, 2013

131104A blog image

Can you imagine babies in the womb breathing a sigh of hope hearing that US Senator Lindsey Graham will introduce a bill to protect children from abortion starting at 20-weeks of fetal age (“22 weeks of pregnancy” by the LMP measurement). And yes, studies show that babies in the womb feel pain, and that they respond to stimulus. When there is joy in the environment outside the womb, they dance and wave their hands and kick their legs.

On the other hand, when the abortion knife is after them, they run away. Hear Fred Hammond’s testimony of how he narrowly missed the abortionist’s knife on my website.

One version of the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act has already been passed by the U.S. House of Representatives, and has been enacted in 10 states. This legislation identifies the child’s ability to feel pain as the relevant state interest in protecting that child from dismemberment by abortion.

Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life said, “we have been sounding the alarm about the pain of the child, and the need to end late-term abortion, for the past two decades. For many years we’ve been distributing the diagram that shows what the dismemberment procedure looks like.

I am joining Father Frank in asking the public to join us in asking each Senator publicly whether he or she thinks that dismemberment of a child in the final months of pregnancy should be allowed. For the record, President Barack Obama voted against the pain capable measure during his term in the U. S. Senate. Most people never knew his position on this crucial question when they elected him to the office of President.

This project will help constituents “put their Senators on record whether there is ultimately a vote in the Senate or not. People can indicate that they want to know their Senators’ answer to this question at Priestsforlife.org/AskWashington. Then, we will let the Senators know that these people from their own states are joining us in asking that question. Finally, we will publicize their answer — or lack thereof,” Fr. Pavone explained.

“Some Senators, of course, will be running for re-election in 2014. If they are not already thinking about fetal pain, they might be forced to do so by considering electoral pain as well,” Fr. Pavone concluded.

In just a few months America will observe the 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act. It seems fitting that efforts like addressing the fetal pain capable act will be a step in the right direction of including all human beings, from conception/fertilization until natural death under the civil rights, and ultimately human rights banner. I want to thank Senator Graham for having the courage to further address this vital issue.

Priests for Life Calls on Senators to Support Pro-life Bill

NEW YORK, NY – Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, welcomed the news that later this week, Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) will introduce a bill to protect children from abortion starting at 20-weeks of fetal age (“22 weeks of pregnancy” by the LMP measurement). He also described some of the things Priests for Life will do to support that bill.

The Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act has already been passed by the U.S. House of Representatives, and has been enacted in 10 states. This legislation identifies the child’s ability to feel pain as the relevant state interest in protecting that child from dismemberment by abortion.

Pavone pointed out. “And for many years we’ve been distributing the diagram that shows what the dismemberment procedure looks like: http://www.priestsforlife.org/resources/medical/de.jpg.

“We will make sure that every Senate office in Washington is given these diagrams,” Fr. Pavone explained. “Moreover, we will urge Senators to become co-sponsors of this bill, will demand action by Senate leadership to allow a vote, and will urge our grassroots supporters to communicate with their Senators.

“We are also asking the public to join us in asking each Senator publicly whether he or she thinks that dismemberment of a child in the final months of pregnancy should be allowed. This project will put each Senator on record whether there is ultimately a vote in the Senate or not. Dr. Alveda King: Media Lies Belie Duty to Publish Truth About Abortion and Civil Rights

Thursday, September 26th, 2013

Anti-Abortion Activists March In Washington

Staten Island, NY – “If media members print distortions, half-truths, or lies, they are duty bound to print corrections. Associated Press reporter Bob Lewis has printed a lie,” said Dr. Alveda King, director of African American Outreach for Priests for Life. King cited a Washington Post excerpt where AP reported:

“In little-noted LG race, GOP’s voluble and volatile Jackson debates wonky Dem doctor, Northam – By Associated Press
ARLINGTON, Va. — Virginia’s lieutenant governor candidates… clashed over health care, how to care for the dangerously mentally ill and women’s access to reproductive health services…”

King explains: “In his story on the Virginia Lieutenant Governor candidates’ debate, Mr. Lewis printed as fact a false claim [easily fact-checked as false] of one of the candidates. Mr. Lewis’s article states that the “personhood” bill considered by the Virginia legislature last year would have outlawed most forms of abortion in the state. In fact, the bill would have outlawed no abortions in the state.”

A brief Google search would reveal that the personhood bill’s summary declares that any rights granted to an unborn child are “subject only to the laws and Constitutions of Virginia and the United States, precedents of the United States Supreme Court, and provisions to the contrary in the statutes of the Commonwealth.” So the bill is restricted by Roe v. Wade and every subsequent abortion decision by the Supreme Court. In other words, it would prohibit no abortions. Missouri has had almost identical language in its state code for years, language that has been upheld in court and which has barred zero abortions.

“Obviously Mr. Lewis and perhaps millions of Americans don’t understand the concept of “personhood” that upholds the constitutional mantra that all men [people] are created equal and are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights. Now that the door is open on the discussion of unalienable [civil] rights, let’s demand the basic and intrinsic civil right of life for all persons, born and preborn,” Dr. King insists.

“On the wings of 50th anniversary of The Civil Rights Act enacted July 2, 1964 are the cries of the aborted babies. While the landmark legislation outlawed major forms of racial, ethnic, national, religious, minority, and female discrimination, people in the womb were left out.”

“Mr. Lewis’s misleading story must be corrected immediately – anything less would mean that the Associated Press no longer values the truth” she concluded.

Renewed Priests for Life Pro-Life Training Announced

Presentations include Archdiocese of Chicago, EWTN, and the Vatican

This week and next, Priests for Life is announcing new efforts in the pro-life education of the clergy and laity. Building on the work of the last two decades, Priests for Life will present renewed initiatives to train people how to live out their commitment to protecting human life. “The pro-life effort is not simply a cause, a movement, or a political position,” explained Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life. “All that has its place. But pro-life is, at its core, a spirituality. The Gospels and the teachings of the Church not only teach us why we are pro-life; they teach us how to live it. There are specific virtues we need, and these virtues shape pro-life activity and strategy.”

Priests for Life just produced new programs for EWTN which reflect this spirituality, and this week Fr. Frank will present it, at the invitation of the Vatican, to a conference of jurists sponsored by the Pontifical Council for the Family. Then, at the end of the week, Fr. Frank will again present this approach in Chicago.

The Archdiocese of Chicago’s Respect Life Office, with the blessing of His Eminence Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I., has invited Fr. Frank to lead a special leadership retreat for Parish Respect Life Coordinators to help them spiritually and mentally prepare for Respect Life Month and another great year of pro-life parish ministry.

“Several years ago, I went to a pro-life retreat that was led by Fr. Frank, and since then, I have wanted to provide this type of experience to all of our Parish Respect Life Coordinators” said Margie Breen, Director of the Respect Life Office of the Archdiocese of Chicago.

“I first came to know of Fr. Frank Pavone and Priests for Life from Father’s appearances on several different EWTN shows. First, it was Father asking people to view the horrible abortion pictures on his Priests for Life website that got me involved in the pro-life movement. Second, I credit Father for my full time pro-life ministry. It was during one of his EWTN homilies that he asked people to leave their current full time work and find ways to work full time in the pro-life movement. I stepped out in faith, and God opened the doors to my current ministry as Respect Life Office Director. The road hasn’t been easy, but it never is when you are working to fight one of the worst injustices of our time. I am grateful to Father Frank and Priests for Life for their important ministry!,” Margie concluded.

Fr. Frank explained, “This retreat will be designed to impart the pro-life spirituality on which we have trained activists around the world for years. It is a spirituality based on the teaching, life and example of three pro-life icons whom I was privileged to know personally and who shaped profoundly my own vocation to pro-life activism: Blessed John Paul II, Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, and Cardinal John O’Connor, who ordained me to the priesthood and gave me permission to devote myself fulltime to the defense of the unborn.”

Fr. Frank added, “From its inception, Priests for Life has had a close and fruitful relationship with the Archdiocese of Chicago. When Cardinal O’Connor released me to be the first full-time director of the organization, Cardinal Bernardin of Chicago permitted Fr. Jim Heyd to be the Associate Director. Cardinal George later permitted Fr. Heyd to work with us full-time. On many occasions over the years, the Archdiocese and its parishes have welcomed Priests for Life. Now, with the exemplary work of Margie Breen, and under the inspiring leadership of Cardinal George, the Archdiocese continues to advance the pro-life cause, and I am honored to assist in that effort.”

Why I Joined the Lawsuit Against the HHS Mandate

Monday, August 19th, 2013

Stop HHS Mandate

As a staunch advocate for the unborn and an outspoken activist against the harm that contraceptives can do to women, I find it appalling that the Obama Administration would force my employer, Priests for Life, to be complicit in offering contraceptives, directly or indirectly, to its employees.

That is why I have decided to join forces with Fr. Frank Pavone, Janet Morana, and Priests for Life to challenge the Department of Health and Human Services and stop the implementation of the “contraceptive services mandate” which would force Priests for Life to provide insurance plans that include coverage for, or access to, contraception, sterilization, abortifacients, and related education and counseling.

Because such insurance plans would provide the very harmful agents are we at Priests for Life and I personally are fighting against every single day, I must oppose the HHS Mandate.

Please review the PowerPoint presentation and video to educate the public about the harmful effects of using contraceptives. To think that I or the company I work for would have anything to do with anyone being harmed from the use of contraceptives is something that I am not willing to accept.

There is also another related aspect of contraceptive use that many don’t understand.

As I said in the press release Priests for Life sent out, “[t]he Obama administration’s insistence on free contraception is an affront to civil rights.

“There are racist and eugenic roots to this thinking. Efforts to control the population always target minority and lower-income groups. We will not sit still and allow this to happen.”
