Why I Joined the Lawsuit Against the HHS Mandate

Stop HHS Mandate

As a staunch advocate for the unborn and an outspoken activist against the harm that contraceptives can do to women, I find it appalling that the Obama Administration would force my employer, Priests for Life, to be complicit in offering contraceptives, directly or indirectly, to its employees.

That is why I have decided to join forces with Fr. Frank Pavone, Janet Morana, and Priests for Life to challenge the Department of Health and Human Services and stop the implementation of the “contraceptive services mandate” which would force Priests for Life to provide insurance plans that include coverage for, or access to, contraception, sterilization, abortifacients, and related education and counseling.

Because such insurance plans would provide the very harmful agents are we at Priests for Life and I personally are fighting against every single day, I must oppose the HHS Mandate.

Please review the PowerPoint presentation and video to educate the public about the harmful effects of using contraceptives. To think that I or the company I work for would have anything to do with anyone being harmed from the use of contraceptives is something that I am not willing to accept.

There is also another related aspect of contraceptive use that many don’t understand.

As I said in the press release Priests for Life sent out, “[t]he Obama administration’s insistence on free contraception is an affront to civil rights.

“There are racist and eugenic roots to this thinking. Efforts to control the population always target minority and lower-income groups. We will not sit still and allow this to happen.”

Priests for Life Is Back In Court To Fight For Religious Freedom.

WASHINGTON, DC – On behalf of the national pro-life ministry, the American Freedom Law Center filed a lawsuit today in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia challenging the Obamacare mandate that Priests for Life’s insurance plan must provide contraception, abortifacients and sterilization services to its employees.

On Tuesday, Aug. 20, at 9 p.m. EDT, Priests for Life will welcome Rep. Michele Bachmann for a Religious Freedom webcast to discuss the case and talk about how people can help to safeguard our First Amendment right to freedom of religion and the even more fundamental right to life itself.

Priests for Life was the fourth organization to file a lawsuit against the mandate in February 2012. The court protected Priests for Life from the effects of the mandate, but declined to rule on its merits because the administration promised that accommodations for faith-based employers would address the organization’s concerns. Those accommodations, released in June, still do not provide Priests for Life the protection it needs from being forced to cover the objectionable drugs and services as part of their health plans.

Therefore, the need now arises to file the lawsuit again, when the court can no longer tell us that new changes are coming or that harm to the organization is not imminent.

“As we predicted from the outset, the accommodation turned out to be no accommodation at all,” said Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life.

The lawsuit alleges that the regulations violate the Constitution and the Religious Freedom Restoration Act by forcing religious organizations to violate their religious beliefs.

The new lawsuit names as plaintiffs, along with the Priests for Life organization itself, the following individuals: Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director; Janet Morana, Executive Director, and Alveda King, Director of African-American Outreach.

“Our concerns are not resolved just because the insurance carrier pays for the services that violate our Catholic faith,” Father Pavone explained. “The fact is that Priests for Life still becomes the gateway through which people can have insurance coverage for some of the very things that our international ministry was formed to combat.”

Mrs. Morana noted that, beyond Priests for Life’s religious objections, there are health concerns as well, since the birth control pill has been labeled a Class 1 carcinogen by the World Health Organization.

“We care about our employees at Priests for Life,” she said. “We would never provide something for them that was both morally wrong and physically hazardous.”

Dr. King, the niece of Martin Luther King Jr., said the Obama administration’s insistence on free contraception is an affront to civil rights.

“There are racist and eugenic roots to this thinking,” Dr. King said. “Efforts to control the population always target minority and lower-income groups. We will not sit still and allow this to happen.”

Robert Muise, co-founder and senior counsel of the American Freedom Law Center, said, “Despite his rhetoric about protecting the right of conscience, President Obama continues his war against religious liberty in order to promote his progressive, liberal agenda. Indeed, progressive liberals view pregnancy as a disease to be ‘prevented’ by contraception and ‘cured’ by abortion. By forcing religious organizations to participate in this culture of death agenda, the Obama administration is violating a core freedom enshrined in the Bill of Rights.”

Catholic groups are not alone in objecting to the contraception/abortifactient mandate. David Yerushalmi, also a co-founder and senior counsel of the American Freedom Law Center, said: “As an orthodox Jew who objects to this mandate on religious and constitutional grounds, I can say with confidence that observant Jews are as opposed to Obama’s assault on religious liberty as are those in the Christian communities across the country. In this battle, we all stand as one.”

The Tuesday, Aug. 20 webcast, which can be accessed online or by phone, will feature special guest Rep. Michele Bachmann as well as Father Pavone, Janet Morana, and Dr. King. Other nationally-known guests have been invited. Sign up to join the webcast at

“As one of the first organizations to launch a lawsuit against this unjust mandate, Priests for Life is more than ready to bring this battle to the next level with today’s new filing,” Father Pavone said. “I am more than confident of victory, not only because of the expertise of the American Freedom Law Center, but because we are fighting for what America itself stands for: freedom, and above all, life.”

Priests for Life Director Praises Judge William Clark

Priests for Life

August 11, 2013

Shandon, Ca – Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, issued the following statement today.

“Our Priests for Life team learned with sadness yesterday of the passing of Judge William P. Clark, Jr. This was a man who served our nation constantly, whether in the key positions he held in President Ronald Reagan’s cabinet, or in the countless ways in which, behind the scenes, he defended the very principles on which the nation was founded.

“He was a great friend of Priests for Life and especially of our administrative team. We got to know him in the late 1990’s and he invited us frequently to his ranch. He opened his property in Shandon, and the beautiful chapel he built on it (“Chapel Hill”), to the pro-life movement, and several times a year we hosted private retreats there for national pro-life leaders. These retreats built up the unity of the movement and enabled leaders to come together in confidential settings to build up relationships of trust, which led to fruitful collaboration. We look forward to the continuation of these retreats.

“Judge Clark served as national security adviser. But along with his role in that position under President Reagan, he fought for our nation’s security by fighting for the right to life, on which all other rights and security depend. He understood the priority of this issue, and lent his advice, encouragement, and personal involvement to the initiatives that we in the pro-life leadership would undertake.

“He and his wife Joan made a public profession of promises as a Missionaries of the Gospel of Life, which is the pro-life spirituality program of Priests for Life.

“It will be my honor, along with our Executive Director, Janet Morana, and our Vice-Chairman, Anthony DeStefano, to represent so many of our colleagues in the pro-life movement as we participate in the funeral on Wednesday of our great friend and national hero, Judge William Clark.”

Flipping the “Freedom Rides” Concept on Its Head

Friday, July 26th, 2013

<pro-life freedom bus

On July 12, 2013 I blogged about the ‘Abortion Rights Freedom Rides’ the Pro-Abortion Movement is having which began Tuesday, July 23 in New York and San Francisco.

Let me explain why I chose the title I did. Remember we’ve been looking at a three headed monster? Well the so called abortion “freedom” rides are linked to that monster.

The Freedom Rides of 1961 were held to fight for the rights of Black Americans. Those rights, the right to be free of discrimination, which were being denied, if given, would not infringe on the rights of other citizens.

In 2010 Priests for Life held the Pro-Life Freedom Rides to fight for the rights of the unborn. Those rights, the right to life, which are being denied, if given, would not infringe on the rights of other citizens.

But the ‘Abortion Rights Freedom Rides’ are being held to protect rights which are infringing on the rights of other Americans, the unborn. The exact opposite if the Freedom Rides and the Pro-Life Freedom Rides.

In the 20th century Freedom Rides, the ones whose rights were being denied had done nothing in order to be in the situation they were in. They were African Americans who were expressing the desire to be treated as equal human beings, not second class citizens. They wanted their rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

In the Pro-Life Freedom Rides, the ones whose rights are being denied also did nothing in order to be in the situation in which they found themselves in, which of course is the womb of their mothers with the threat of abortion and imminent death looming over them.

In contrast, the ‘Abortion Rights Freedom Rides,’ the ones whose rights are supposedly being denied are in the situation that they are in because of choices they are making regarding aborting the human beings in their wombs. Whether or not the situation that caused the state of pregnancy involved consent or coercion or force, a pregnancy brings yet another human into the picture; a person in a womb which modern ultrasound technology affirms is a person.

Some fighting for abortion rights are doing so because they are profiting from abortion and they don’t want their income to go away. Those in this category are very dishonest to the women they are pretending to “protect” because they don’t even fully disclose all of the harmful effects of abortion – not to the child, but – to the mother. Abortion and related products and procedures that seek to prevent a woman from birthing a live baby are often very harmful to the bodies and souls of the mothers. Abortion and invasive birth control methods are often linked to breast cancer and other forms of cancer and disorders. Contrary to lies of the pro-abortion industry, pregnancy is not a sickness or a disease.

One of the most frustrating things for me in my pro-life work is that people think that they have the right to have sex without the consequences of the outcome; hence abortion, the Pro-Choice movement, and now the Bro-Choice movement. The actual purpose of sex is to cause a man and a woman to procreate, to get pregnant and birth a baby. So why isn’t the ProChoice community admitting this? The agenda of the ProChoice Movement is to promote hyper-sexed activity for a profit.

One of the biggest culprits pushing this mentality is Planned Parenthood and why wouldn’t they? They have much to gain from this type of behavior. Even as I prepare this blog, Planned Parenthood is in your local schools instructing your children to experiment with sex, with many sexual partners and with same sex partners. Under the guise of protection, they distribute contraceptives, many time free of charge, knowing that there is always a percentage that will conceive children and the users of their products will soon be seeking their services.

As I am writing this I feel like I’m comparing good vs. evil; one being the opposite of the other.

I believe that many agree that the 20th Century Freedom Rides and fighting for civil rights was a just cause. Logic should lead us to conclude that the ProLife Freedom Rides were for justice as well. Based upon conclusive evidence that abortion kills babies, and harms and sometimes kills mothers, we should logically conclude that rides to promote abortion and harmful contraceptives are not good. So do we want to ride for good justice or for evil? I’ll let you draw your own conclusions regarding the what a good freedom ride is, and what is not.

Hispanic Pro-Life Coalition Supports Texas Law to Limit Abortions (English/Espaňol)

Contact: Fr. Victor Salomon, 202-380-6123

“For decades, Texas has allowed abortion centers to specialize in late-term abortions targeting our African American and Hispanic communities. This signature curbs the genocide but there is still much to be done,” stated Fr. Victor Salomon, director of Hispanic Outreach for Priests for Life.

“Hispanics for Life applauds the decision by Texan legislators to limit abortions. We hope it is a step toward the day when all unborn human beings are protected and women are spared the exploitation by the abortion industry,” affirmed Astrid Bennett Gutierrez, President of Hispanics for Life.

Kristina Garza, director of Campus Outreach for Survivors of the Abortion Holocaust, issued the following statement: “The 20-week abortion ban is common sense legislation. Not only have women, especially minority women, been preyed upon by unscrupulous abortionists who have operated with no oversight whatsoever, but their babies have been mercilessly tortured to death for far too long. Finally, Texas has taken the first step in protecting women and babies. I hope that Texas becomes the example for the rest of the nation and that we will all encourage our pro-life legislators to act with the same courage that Governor Perry and the Texas legislature has.”

Fr. Pavone Louds Texas Gov. Perry’s Signing of Pro-Life Low

Date: July 18, 2013

Contact: Leslie Palma

Staten Island, NY – Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, issued the following statement today in support of Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s signing of a bill to prohibit almost all abortions after five months of pregnancy, regulate abortion clinics as ambulatory surgical centers, and require abortionists to have local hospital admitting privileges.

“Governor Rick Perry and the Texas legislature have done what they were elected to do, that is, safeguard the well-being of Texans. The new law Governor Perry signs today will advance the protection of women from the unscrupulous practices of abortionists, and the protection of children from the deadly weapons of those same abortionists. Those who were so vociferous in their opposition to this law are on the wrong side of morality and of history.”

“We at Priests for Life will continue to expose the horrors committed by Texas abortionists like Douglas Karpen. This law will make that task much easier.”

I #Stand4Life With Texas

Thursday, July 11th, 2013

#IStand4Life Perry

With the passage of HB2, a bill that would ban abortions after 20 weeks, in the Texas State House of Representatives, the bill now goes to the Senate where a vote should take place later this week or beginning of next week.

In spite of State Senator Wendy Davis’ eleven hour filibuster the bill moves closer to approval after Texas Governor Rick Perry called a second special session in order to get pro-life legislation approved.

I stand 4 life with Texans and other pro-lifers who are fighting to protect the lives of the pre-born and their mothers. Medical evidence shows that a baby can feel pain at 5 months of development. Putting aside the fact that abortion is the killing of a human life and should be illegal, abortion of a baby at 20 weeks (5 months) by ripping her limb by limb is something that every person should be against.

Additionally, the further along in a pregnancy the woman is, the higher the risk of the abortion. Protecting women from high risk abortions that have resulted in the deaths of hundreds of women is also something that every person should be fighting for.

That only makes sense.

We have regulations to protect society from unscrupulous doctors in other medical fields, from deceitful auto mechanics, from fly-by-night home contractors, from scheming pyramid salesmen. The government seems to be interested in protecting society from all forms of abuses except when it comes to the abortion industry.

When it comes to the abortion industry, protection seems to be the word of the day. The abortion industry uses its millions of dollars to buy themselves protection from restrictions on abortion, from regulations of abortion, from prosecution of wrongdoing. When it comes to abortion, money talks.

The fact that a woman would stand and talk for eleven hours to stop this bill that would protect human life, both unborn and their mothers, only serves to confirm that abortion is evil. This was further confirmed during a recent peaceful prayer vigil by pro-lifers in which pro-aborts chanted “Hail Satan” as pro-lifers sang Amazing Grace.

Are pro-aborts getting that desperate that they are no longer hiding the fact that abortion is a product of Satan? Are the people of America going to ever wake up to this fact?

It’s time for America and the world to repent of the sin of abortion and turn back to God. It’s time we begin to value all life as the gift God intended it to be.

I STAND 4 LIFE! Please stand with me.

Fr. Frank Pavone on Ohio Budget: So Much to Praise

Tuesday, July 2nd, 2013

Priests for Life

July 1, 2013

Contact: Leslie Palma

STATEN ISLAND, NY – Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, today praised Ohio Governor John Kasich and Ohio’s legislature for enacting budget provisions that value life and protect the right of conscience.

“There is so much in this budget to praise, that it’s hard to cover it all,” Fr. Pavone said. “Less money to child-killing and more to child-saving is a great place to start. And as for those who complain that the new budget provisions will force some abortion clinics in Ohio to close, let me say this: it’s time for the abortion industry to put up or shut up. They claim to care so much about women’s health. If that’s true, then do what the law requires to protect women’s health, or stop hiding behind it.”

Pelosi Question Bubble

Fr. Frank Pavone is highly respected for his dedication to the unborn and his determination to fight to end abortion. I am truly grateful that he is not afraid to speak the truth and challenge those that would spread lies.

That is why I’m not afraid to stand with Father Pavone in his latest #LetterToNancy campaign at

This campaign is really about a whole lot more that simply challenging one politician. It’s really about everyone in America and around the world answering the same question that Mrs. Pelosi is being asked but refuses to answer: “What is the moral difference between what Dr. Gosnell did to a baby born alive at 23 weeks and aborting her moments before birth?”

It’s also bigger than Catholicism or any other religion. It’s about all people everywhere and the belief that life is sacred.

Just as we wish to protect our born children from predators and abuse because they are vulnerable, we must also protect the most vulnerable, those in the womb. They are human beings too and should be protected by law.

The question asked of Mrs. Pelosi was about a 23 week old baby who had ten fingers, ten toes, a beating heart, lungs, eyes, ears, mouth, and a nose. And certainly this baby deserves protection. But I say to you that at 4 months, at 2 months, at 25 days, at 10 days, at conception all those features were already programmed into the DNA and as such was already a human being demanding protection.

So as you ponder the question, don’t be afraid to ask the same question of your Pastor, your friends, your family.

The answer is simply really.

There is no difference between aborting a baby moments before birth and what Gosnell did and a host of other abortionists are doing in abortion mills across this country.

It’s time for the 21st Century Civil Rights Movement to go to the next level. It’s time we Abolish Abortion!
