9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling on pregnancy centers violates First Amendment

NEW YORK — Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, has joined Dr. James Dobson in calling for civil disobedience in California, where the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled that pregnancy help centers must promote abortion.

“People who care about the sanctity of life cannot ignore this violation of the First Amendment,” Father Pavone said. “Henry David Thoreau wrote that when a person’s conscience clashes with the law, the conscience must win. And the apostles declared, We must obey God rather than men! Clearly this is an instance where conscience must win.

“In upholding California’s Reproductive FACT Act, the Ninth Circuit insists that the state’s pregnancy centers – most of which do not receive any state funding – must tell mothers where they can get a state-funded abortion. This is diametrically opposed to the very reason these centers exist, namely, to help mothers facing an unexpected pregnancy to choose life.

“I urge pro-life Californians, and all those who treasure the U.S. Constitution, to engage in peaceful and prayerful acts of civil disobedience by simply refusing to provide any information to any mother about how she can have her child killed. This fight is not over.”
