NEW YORK – Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, today praised the Louisiana legislature for passing legislation that extends the state’s abortion period from 24 to 72 hours.

“Abortion is life changing and final,” said Fr. Pavone. “Abortion clinics, like salesmen, want to speed their customers through the process before they can change their minds. A 72-hour reflection period is not only appropriate in this instance, it’s vital.”

The Louisiana legislature’s passage of H.B. 386 makes the state the sixth to pass a 72-hour waiting period before a woman can have an abortion. The bill now goes to Governor John Bel Edwards, a Democrat who supports the measure, for his signature.

“My prayer is that Governor Edwards enacts this important legislation,” added Fr. Pavone. “As pastoral director of two ministries for healing after abortion, Rachel’s Vineyard and the Silent No More Awareness campaign, I know how many women, now devastated by an abortion that can never be reversed, wish that they had been given just another day or two to gain the perspective and strength to do the right thing.”
