Father Stephen Imbarrato, a member of the Priests for Life Pastoral Team, who has led significant pro-life activism in New Mexico, including investigation of the late-term abortion industry there, today applauded the House Select Investigative Panel on Infant Lives for its decision to refer for criminal investigation the University of New Mexico (UNM) and Southwest Women’s Options (SWWO), an abortion business in Albuquerque.

Fr. Frank Pavone and Priests for Life have supported the work of the panel from the beginning and have channeled information to its members.

Rep. Marsha Blackburn, chairwoman, said evidence has been uncovered that indicates an illegal relationship between the university and the business that provides abortions through all three trimesters of pregnancy.

“It is the Panel’s understanding,” Ms. Blackburn said, “that SWWO is the sole provider of fetal tissue to UNM.”

The panel believes the relationship violates the Spradling Act, which prohibits making anatomical gifts of the remains of any baby killed by induced abortion.

“Documentation obtained by the Panel in the course of our investigation reflects the transfer of fetal tissue from Southwestern Women’s Options to UNM for research purposes is a systematic violation of New Mexico’s Spradling Act,” Ms. Blackburn said.

Father Imbarrato founded several pro-life organizations in Albuquerque, including Protest ABQ, which is now run by Bud and Tara Shaver. He thanked the Shavers, the House panel and others for shining a light on the relationship between the university and the abortion business.

“This is the result of the hard and good work of the entire pro-life community in New Mexico,” Father Imbarrato said. “Everyone needs to keep the pressure on and demand our governor and legislators finally put an end to the unfettered and unregulated abortion cartel in the state.”

Father Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, also saluted the work of the panel.

“Despite the nation attempting to avert its eyes from the baby parts harvesting scandal, Rep. Blackburn’s panel will ensure this is not possible,” Father Pavone said. “Laws have been broken and it’s past time for a reckoning.”
