Juneteenth: A Celebration of Freedom for the Slaves of Yesterday and Today

Juneteenth, also known as Juneteenth Independence Day, Freedom Day, or Emancipation Day, is a holiday in the United States that commemorates the announcement of the abolition of slavery in the U.S. state of Texas on June 19, 1865, and more generally the emancipation of African-American slaves throughout the Confederate South.

Although the Emancipation Proclamation was signed on January 1, 1863 by President Abraham Lincoln slaves were not living as freed people in Texas because no one had informed them of their emancipation, and because Northern troops had not yet arrived to safeguard their freedom.

On June 19th, soldiers led by General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas to announce the end of the War Between the States and announced that all slaves are free.

Today, there is still a class of citizens that are not free. They are “slaves” to choice and are treated as property to be discarded at will. The vulnerable and pre-born babies in the womb do not have a voice and can be killed at will by abortion. This is the Civil Rights Movement of today and the vehicle for their emancipation is the Pro-Life Movement.

In 2010, AAO took Pro-Life Freedom Rides to Alabama, We’re going back, this time to Selma, AL

On June 19, 2015 we will arrive by bus; bringing to Alabama once again our Prolife Freedom Rides message: Abortion is not a Civil Right. Life is a civil right. America will never be free until all people are free. This of course includes all womb babies.

Join national and local members of the Prolife community and bring many others. The conveners of this effort are Chairperson Catherine Davis, and Co-chairs Star Parker, Day Gardner, Alveda King, DeHavilland Ford and a host of others.

Be a part of the virtual streaming or live grassroots bus tour to Selma on Juneteenth, June 19, 2015 for a rally and a march across the Pettus Bridge on June 20th. Use the form below to be kept up to date with news of the Juneteenth events.
