Reforming the Democratic Party

The case has been made by a number of writers and ethicists, with quite a bit of persuasiveness, that it is no longer morally permissible to support the Democratic party. So many Democrats have come to that conclusion on their own, in fact, that I can’t keep up on all the emails I get from people who have left the party over its radical, anti-life, anti-marriage, and anti-religious positions.

Now I know many faithful pro-life Democrats, some of whom are in elected office, and I know countless others who are simply not aware of how the party has changed and who would probably leave the party if they understood those changes. I also know many who do understand those changes and yet work within the party for reform. We at Priests for Life have a very fruitful working relationship with Democrats for Life of America, and their various chapters.

My point, however, is this. Unless one is working to change this party into a pro-life party, it’s very difficult, if not impossible to justify supporting it. The party has become the agent of a national holocaust. Other “good” positions the party may have – of which there are many – simply do not and cannot counterbalance that moral problem. And now that the elections have given that party more power, it is all the more urgent to point this out.

It all starts with education. I’ve placed on our website a comparison of the 2008 platforms of the Democratic and Republican parties. Click here to read it. Please read through it and pass it around.

The Morality of Supporting the Democratic Party

This may be a bit controversial (at least for some):The case has been made by a number of writers and ethicists, with quite a bit of persuasiveness, that it is no longer morally permissible to support the Democratic party. So…

    Dear Father Pavone,

As the Chairman of the Board of Democrats for Life of America, I appreciate your relationship with our organization. As an active Catholic, I believe that too many Catholics forget that Christ taught us that if we were truly following his teachings, our path would not be easy. That we would be despised and hated for the work we do. I have worked actively in the Democratic Party and been mistreated for being pro-life, but also found many pro-life members within the party who are afraid to speak out. The truth is the that the “activists” within the party are always further to the left than the rank and file voters. I’ve also met pro-life Catholics who take the easy way out by joining their local Republican Party, yet some turn a blidn eye to the Republican Party’s pro-war, pro-capital punishment, anti-labor agenda which does not help single women who need help if they get pregnant. I challenge the pro-life Catholics to become visible within the Democratic Party. I also challenge pro-life Republicans to stop thier partisan activities which are to the detriment of the pro-life movement. Democrats for Life continues to support pro-life Democrats to office all over the country and to dialogue with all Democratic elected officials and our voice increases within the party. As the Republican Party’s voice diminishes, it is more important than ever to work with pro-life Democrats and support them. I also challenge you to stop refering to the Democratic Party in stereotypes as if the entire party and all our Democratic elected officials are “radical, anti-life, anti-marriage and anti-religious” This does not move the bi-partisan effort forward.

How can anyone who is pro-life vote for a person that is for abortion? The only way to change the democratic thinking is for all pro-lifers to vote for only prolife candidates.

Would you vote for a pro choice GOP candidate? Maybe not So you must not vot

for anyone if both Dem or GOP are PC .Isn’t there times when abortion is required to save the life of the mother. How do you know the that the pro-choice DEM condones any kind of abortion…Why do you impose you will on others. What happen to ones free will? Who determines that abortion is a mortal sin?Who made us the judge .Meat consumed on friday used to be a sin if eaten. Why not let God be the judge in all situations and try to be more tolerant of our fellow women.

Have another question…even a prolifer has a choices..they choose to have abortion or not have abortion..it all depends what choice one makes.. why is choice considered abortionby the prolifers? choice implies that every human is capable of makinf choices.RoE v Wade permits a choice can be made by the women only..she has the choice to do or not to do..RvW does not demand that the women choose abortion..it’s up to the women..that goes for every decision that a person makes before undertaking a task or a judgement on moral issues. that is the free will that God gave us.If she chooses abortion that’s her choice irespective of the killing/murder of the fetus..her choice is an error in judgement to some but it was her choice and she will have to suffer the consequence of her decission. For the anti-abortionist this is a crime .So does the women need to be put to death for her crime and bad choice? Her choice didn’t justify her crime. So the question now is what does the law say about the choice the women made..is thei a law against makinf a bad choice on abortiion?
please answer and give me a definition of choice

You guys are sooo one sided. Abortion isn’t the only moral issue. Do you guys seriously believe that God is pleased with an unjust war, the racist attitudes in each party, promiscuity that is promoted in our society that leads to unwanted pregnancies. I am pro life but you guys are complainers with NO SOLUTIONS. No one can demonize anyone, when we sin we sin against God and it is God who judges the heart. Are you guys concerned about the lack of concern for the innocent children murdered on the streets every day? It is only because of Christ that any of us is justified. Stop questioning people’s Christianity and positions. No political party is righteous or better.

  8. I do not think that you are one sided at all. As a matter of fact, you are quite clear on the subject. The Democratic Party has literally sold its soul for the gold. I am an African American female, middle aged who supported the Democratic Party undauntingly for most of my life. However, the past year I began to question so many things about the Democratic Party including their stance on abortion. This election was the first election in my life that I did not vote Democrat. Further, I am changing my party affiliation because the more I look into the Democratic Party, the further I find myself from them.

With the winning of president elect Barack Obama, Frankly Father Pavone, I fear for the fate of the unborn.

Many prayers are required more so then ever before.

    Sincerely,

Linda get a clue. What did Bush do for the born let alone the unborn. You guys are so narrow minded. If you are truly prolife then pray for the lives of the young innocent children in America. Prayer is needed because Christ has instructed us to do so not because of PE Obama.
