Late Term Abortions Provided More Widely Than Media Reporting

Reporting about the murder of abortionist George Tiller has included misleading references to the frequency of “late term” abortion in the United States.

The Alan Guttmacher Institute (the research arm of Planned Parenthood) reports that abortions of pregnancies at 21 weeks or later comprise about 1.1 percent of the nation’s abortions, which that same institute also indicates are in the area of 1.21 million. That means over 13,000 babies a year are killed at 21 weeks or beyond. Click here for the Guttmacher statistics.

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) statistics, late-term abortions (i.e., those of babies 21 weeks or older) are done in many states, which means that there are more than two or three abortionists who do them. A June 1st L.A. Times story refers to the CDC statistics, which show that in 2005, 8,482 abortions were performed on babies 21 weeks or older, but only 459 of them were done in Kansas. Note that the CDC statistics are lower than the Guttmacher statistics, because California (in which about a quarter of the nation’s abortions occur), along with a few other states, do not report their abortion statistics to the CDC.

  1. Christina says:

Go to Abortion Clinics Online and check out their listings for late term abortionists. There are 36 that I counted advertising after 21 weeks.

And this isn’t counting the seedy storefronts that only advertise in local Spanish language newspapers.

That’s more than three by a long shot.

But the AP can’t be bothered with gathering facts.

  2. MoreReasonablethanDD says:

Yeah, Christina, you see something like “Major depression, single episode” and you think it’s nothing, right?

That can mean the patient tried to commit suicide. Either a “gesture” or an unserious attempt (unserious attempts can be accidentally successful), or a genuine serious attempt.

There’s a very good, easy, cheap solution to all this: the Government should leave the question whether to abort or continue a pregnancy entirely to women and docs.

  3. MoreReasonablethanDD says:

Oh, and regarding the “seedy” practice of advertising in Spanish media only, that means the advertising people know what they’re doing. Spanish-speaking women have way more abortions than English-Speaking women. You advertise where there is most demand. Sure, you want to advertise to the English-speaking community too, but your advertising budget is limited. Somewhere someone has calculated exactly how many Spanish ads they should place before they place the first English one, in order to maximize your business.

How about those cancer centers and neuro-clinics that advertise in journals for elderly readers? Is that seedy? Gyms advertising in fitness magazines, what about that?

  4. MoreReasonablethanDD says:

Oh, I meant Spanish-speaking women have way more abortions PER CAPITA than English-speaking women, IN USA.

  5. MoreReasonablethanDD says:

Do you wanna know where one of the best places would be to advertise for an abortion clinic, if it were possible?

That’s right–Catholic high schools. In USA, it is generally true that more religious people have abortions less frequently than less religious people. In other words, the more religious you are, the less likely you are to have an abortion. But there are exceptions and one is, you guessed it, YOUR religion. Catholic women, regardless of how religious they are, seem to have abortions as frequently as totally non-religious women.

At least that was so a few years ago when I last looked into it seriously.

  6. MoreReasonablethanDD says:

There’s a specialty-CD company that produces CDs of arias being sung by Italian tenors of the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. Caruso, Lanza, del Monaco, Pavorotti. And wouldja believe it, they have the nerve, the gall, the crust to advertise only in Italian papers!

    Verrrrrrry seedy.

  7. MoreReasonablethanDD says:

It must be an anti-Italian conspiracy, they want to make Italians go deaf. That’s why they advertise in Italian newspapers only.

  8. Timely Joke says:

How many right-to-lifers does it take to change a light-bulb?

    A. They use a team of three: one to write to Congress, one to pray to Jesus for light, and one to go shoot the local electrician in the head while he’s officiating in his church.

  9. “MoreReasonable”,
Do you know of any studies which show that abortion is an effective anti-depression therapy in pregnant women?
Do you know of any studies which show that abortion at least does not worsen depression in pregnant women?
Isn’t it possible that a woman who seeks an abortion while depressed is making a symbolic suicidal gesture— that what she really needs is treatment for her depression, not the tragedy of the death of her unborn child?
I was staunchly pro-abortion for most of my adult life until I began watching Fr. Frank’s television show because of the euthanasia issue, which as a disabled person (autistic) I am very much against. Even if I were still pro-abortion I would want Roe v. Wade overturned because it makes it impossible to pass effective laws to protect women from abortions they do not want or that will do them harm.
In this day and age where we can save younger and younger premature babies, how can we kill babies at that age without doing emotional damage to the mothers?

  10. MoreRtDD says:

    Dear Nissa Annakindt,

Wow, many questions. OK, one by one.

Your first question about depression and abortion shows you didn’t quite understand what I was saying. I’m not making a point about depression and abortion. My point is about the MEANING of the phrase “Major depression, single episode”.

I’m saying that when a patient’s chart shows “Major depression, single episode”, it appears to scornful commenters, who don’t know what they’re talking about, as if she’s getting a third-trimester abortion for a frivolous reason, she feels blue or whatever, but in fact it can be psychiatry-code for she wants the abortion so urgently that the prospect of not getting it has been sufficient to motivate a suicide attempt or gesture. That’s not frivolous. Forcing her to continue the pregnancy is a health risk. (Suicide gestures can succeed accidentally. Walking in front of an approaching car. Taking pills, expecting to be found and stomach-pumped in time, and getting the dose wrong.)

Second question: No I don’t. There was a paper in Science in the 1990s but it didn’t look specifically at already-depressed women, only at abortion patients generally. Let me reply with another question: do you know of any studies that show that forcing women to continue pregnancies they don’t want, and to endure childbirth against their wills, is good therapy for depression in pregnant women? (”Oh, you’re depressed? OK, we’re gonna force you to complete your pregnancy and give birth. Feel better now?”)

Third question: no, getting an abortion is not a suicidal gesture. It neither presents a significant risk of death nor does it appear to do so.

Do you understand that Father Frank is opposing VOLUNTARY euthanasia? Should you be forced to live if you prefer not to? What should the punishment for attempting to kill yourself be, if you fail and survive to suffer the punishment? How about … the death penalty! The idea’s absurd, but if you should not be punished for (attempting) suicide, then why should your hired assistant be punished for helping you?

I agree with you that R/W is bad Constitutional interpretation. But it does not as you say prevent laws against doing abortions on women who don’t want them. You do that and you’re going down. There’s at least one pending case of abortifacient poisoning and I’d bet everything I own the perp will do time. As for abortions that do women harm, there’s already a law against that. The crime is called medical malpractice. And all the clinic shut-downs and citations which right-to-lifers report so gleefully show that the law is being enforced.

OK, your final question, about emotional damage. Whatever emotional damage abortions do to the patients (if any) you have to compare it to the emotional damage that would be done if you force the patient to complete her pregnancy, and endure childbirth, against her will.

I’d rather do a million abortions than hear patients in labor screaming truthfully that they were forced by their government to endure it.

Thank you Fr. Frank for all you do to stand against the most heinous crime against humanity: the destruction of the unborn. As another great defender of human life stated: “Everything Hitler did was legal”–Dr. Martin L. King, Jr. Slavery Abolished? Yes! Abortion Abolished…Absolutely!…it’s only a matter of time.

  12. BenCallicoat says:

We will never rest until the killing of the unborn stops.

    Never.

Halleluiah!!! Halleluiah!!! THE KANSAS CARNAGE CLINIC CLOSED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. Catholic Carol says:

NEWS FLASH! Does everyone know about the following news information? (Check it out on Google)

-Dr. Pendergraft (an ex-con who spent 2 years in prison for extortion in 2001) of Orlando, FL whose license to perform late-term abortions was suspended for the second time in three years, has lost his court appeal on July 2nd-yet his medical clinic continues to operate and be profitable!
(Tillers practice continues too-through a referral agency; ‘Aid for Women’–Call them at 1-800-626-9184 to complain about killing viable babies and ruining women’s lives.)
    Please read the following comment which was posted by a pro-life demonstrator posting on Jill Stanek’s webpage three days ago;

“You know what is very sad? Our Saturday team told everyone coming to kill their babies that Pendergraft’s medical license was suspended. Nobody appeared concerned. Each of abortion bound ‘patients’ were personally handed a copy of the court’s ruling this morning, but it didn’t seem to make a difference to any of them either.

It reminded me of ministering at OWC the first day it opened after it had been closed for several months during Pendergraft’s emergency suspension. There was a HUGE crowd of women & their companions waiting outside for the mill to open. We had a long time to speak with the aborting moms before the clinic worker’s unlocked the front door. We told everyone that the clinic had been shut down by the department of health for three months. Many of the people nodded & said; “Yeah, I know.” We asked them if they knew that the owner of the place had been caught doing illegal abortions & dispensing narcotics without a DEA number. A few of them laughed & said: “Everyone makes mistakes”, “Well, we all have skeletons in our closet, don’t we?” “None of us is perfect”.

When Dr Nelson Kraucak brought his wife in to kill her baby by labor-and-delivery I asked him if he knew that Pendergraft had his license suspended, yadda, yadda. He laughed. A few minutes later Kraucak attacked me, pushed me to the ground & kicked me. I reckon people don’t want to hear the truth.

Hear no evil. See no evil. Speak no evil. Turn a blind eye to evil. I find that a LOT.”

Another fact people reading this may not realize is that Dr. Tiller was in cahoots with almost all of Kansas legislators. Paul Morrison who was Kansas’ Attorney General resigned in disgrace after Dr. Tillers death. And, I would not be surprised at all if former Kansas Governor, Kathleen Sibelius resigns her post soon as US Health and Human Services Director.
Both Sibelius and Morrison were both hand-picked and campaign bankrolled by Tiller! Please stand up for what is right people! Let folks know the truth!

Dealing with a premature baby is not easy. Women go through a lot of pain and struggle during pregnancy only with the hope to see a healthy baby delivered. But when someone delivers a premature baby it takes a lot of courage to accept the fact and deal with the concequences especially when the doctors do not have a lot of hope for the baby.
