Observing Father’s Day

This weekend we observe Fathers’ Day. We thank God for faithful fathers who, like God himself, give and protect life.
Let’s also pray for fathers who are afraid to be fathers.

Thousands of times a day, children are aborted, not because of a choice of the mother, but because of the choice of a father, who fails to show the faithfulness and willingness to protect the child he has helped conceive.

At other times, fathers tried to stop the abortion. But the law excludes them from the final decision about the abortion.
Men do suffer grief after the abortion of their child. Healing programs are available for these fathers.

Let us pray today for all fathers. When their child is unexpected, may they welcome that child and encourage the child’s mother to say yes to life.

Leading Pro-Life Priest Asks, “Haven’t We Learned From the Child Abuse Scandal?”

Contact: Margaret
Date: June 18, 2009

Staten Island, NY – Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, responded today to the news that the Board of Directors of the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities concluded at their meeting last week that “it would be desirable for the [U.S. bishops] to withdraw” their 2004 statement, “Catholics in Political Life.”

“It’s bad enough that this Association doesn’t seem to understand the role of bishops,” Fr. Pavone stated. “But what’s worse is that it doesn’t seem to understand the underlying reason for the bishops’ position against honoring pro-abortion public figures. It’s not about religion, it’s not about academic freedom, and it’s not about universities. It’s about the proper human response to the barbaric dismemberment of children.”

Fr. Pavone continued, mocking the Association, “Sure, keep advising the bishops. Have them withdraw the statement. How terrible that we should make any clear effort to distance ourselves from the violent child-killing taking place among us.”

Fr. Pavone concluded, “In the view of history, any irresponsible silence of the Church about clergy sex abuse will pale in comparison to the silence of so many about the abortion holocaust.”

Atlanta, GA – Dr. Alveda King, Director of African American Outreach for Priests for Life and niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., will join other African American leaders on Capitol Hill today and tomorrow to celebrate Juneteenth and the premiere of the new film documenting black genocide in the 21st century, MAAFA 21.

“Juneteenth, the day slavery finally ended in the United States, was a turning point in the struggle for equal rights,” said Dr. King. “It’s appropriate that we honor that momentous occasion with the viewing of a powerful film that shows how the struggle still continues, as African Americans and all Americans press on to secure the most basic human right, the right to life.”

MAAFA 21, a new DVD documentary about eugenics, abortion, and the African American community, will premiere tonight at 6:30 pm at the Capitol Visitors Center’s Atrium and Auditorium following a 6:00 pm reception. Hosts include Priests for Life African American Outreach, Gerard Health Foundation, National Black Pro-Life Union, LEARN Network, and Students for Life. Honorary Host of the event is Congressman Trent Franks.

At noon tomorrow, the day of Juneteenth, a panel discussion and showing of MAAFA 21 will be held at the Cannon House Office Building’s Caucus Room.

All events are nonpartisan and open to the public.

“MAAFA 21must be seen by everyone who values freedom and equal rights,” added Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life. “I urge everyone in the Washington, DC area not to miss this chance to be among the first to see what everyone will be talking about.”

Sharpen Your Skills This Week

This week, the National Right to Life convention is being held in Charlotte. Hundreds of pro-life activists will gather from around the country to sharpen their skills in talking about abortion, lobbying for pro-life laws, electing pro-life candidates, and healing those wounded by abortion.

Just as important, these pro-life people strengthen one another with their sharing of information, experience, and encouragement.

The National Right to Life Committee is one of the most respected and effective lobbying groups in the United States, as acknowledged by supporters of abortion as well as opponents. National Right to Life has also played an irreplaceable role in getting pro-life candidates elected to public office, and then keeping them pro-life once they get there.

The Feast of Corpus Christi

This coming weekend the Church celebrates the Feast of Corpus Christi. We worship the God who gives us His very Body and Blood.
An early Christian symbol of Jesus was the Pelican, because of the legend that the mother Pelican wounded herself to feed her children with her own blood. You can still see this on some altars.

This makes us think, at the same time, of the Eucharist and of the relationship between a mother and her unborn child, who is nourished in the most intimate way by nutrients carried in the mother’s blood.

Jesus gives Himself to us daily on the altars of our Churches so that we can give ourselves to our children — born and unborn — daily on the altars of our lives.

Fr. Pavone Urges Passage of Pro-Life Bills to Protect Women, Babies, and Health Care Workers

Staten Island, NY – Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, today praised the Arizona Senate Committee on Public Safety and Human Services for passing SB 1206 and SB 1138.

“This proposed legislation would enact protections for women, babies, and health care workers that are overwhelmingly supported by a strong majority of the public,” said Fr. Pavone. “I pray that the state Senate will quickly adopt these bills and send them to Governor Brewer.”

One Solitary Child

Fr. Frank Pavone
National Director, Priests for Life

I recently had a conversation with a woman named Laura, who volunteers in the mail room at Priests for Life. She told me an interesting story about her son, Salvatore, who was born in 1973, the year Roe. Vs. Wade legalized abortion.

After she had given birth and was in the hospital recovering from her caesarian section, she was struck by the fact that even though the maternity ward seemed to be full of women, there were no other newborn babies around except hers. In fact, her infant son was all alone in a room full of empty incubators. It was a strange and almost eerie site.

One morning, Laura was awakened by screaming and moaning coming from down the hall. Thinking it was simply the labor pains of other women giving birth, she asked the nurse why someone didn’t help them. The nurse replied matter-of-factly: “Oh they’re not in labor. They’re having abortions. They didn’t think it would hurt.”

It turned out that the hospital Laura was in specialized in providing abortions, and following the 1973 Supreme Court decision, their business was booming.

The image of that ghostly maternity ward, devoid of all but one, solitary child; devoid of all the happy sounds of crying, newborn babies, with only the agonized sobbing of post-abortive mothers echoing through the empty corridors, reminded me again of how much emptier our world is because of all the abortions that have taken place since this most horrible of all atrocities was legalized.

And make no mistake, it is the most horrible of all atrocities. Sometimes people in our own Church attempt to trivialize abortion by lumping it together with the other evils of the world-by comparing it with poverty, disease, war, etc. But as the numbers clearly demonstrate, there is no comparison. Since 1973 there have been 50 million abortions in the United States alone. Worldwide, there are 42 million abortions every year. That means that in the last thirty years, there have been over 1.5 billion abortions!

1.5 billion! That’s the equivalent of approximately one quarter of the entire population of the planet! One quarter of the earth’s population, murdered; snuffed out; gone.

There’s a famous poem about Jesus that concludes with the memorable lines: “All the armies that ever marched, all the navies that ever sailed, all the kings that ever reigned, put together, have not affected the life of man upon this earth as powerfully as that One Solitary Life.”

Unfortunately, we can say about abortion:

All the wars ever fought,
All the holocausts ever perpetrated,
All the plagues that ever raged,
All the bombs that ever dropped,
All the famines that ever laid waste to the land, put together, have not killed the number of human beings wiped out by abortion.

And yet, hope endures, because God’s grace abounds, even amidst such devastation.

And what ever happened to Laura’s baby? As she proudly related to me, her son, Fr. Sal, just celebrated his one year anniversary as a priest of the Catholic Church!

Third Trimester Abortions

In Bellevue, Nebraska, LeRoy Carhart practices medicine. One of the ways he thinks he is serving women is to perform abortions. And he is one of an unknown number of people in America who perform third trimester abortions, as the Associated Press recently reported.

In Boulder, Colorado, Warren Hern practices medicine. He, too, thinks he is helping people by performing third-trimester abortions, as the AP also recently reported.

Abortions in the seventh, eighth, and ninth months of pregnancy are in fact happening legally in America. More light is being shed on this practice in the wake of the death of George Tiller of Wichita, who also did abortions at that late stage.

Many Americans don’t know and don’t believe such abortions occur. Nobody should ever be allowed to deny it again.
