The Church is the Only Institution…

Friday, July 30th, 2010

The war against the unborn can only ultimately be stopped by and through the Church. Just from a natural point of view, this is a vast network of interaction and communication. Imagine what can happen if our clergy infuse that vast structure with clear, vigorous, and compassionate pro-life teaching and action.

The Church is the only institution that has a Divine guarantee that it will prevail over the culture of death. “The gates of hell will not prevail against it,” the Lord said. The gates of death fall in the presence of life.

To fully apply those gifts to the task of ending abortion, does not so much require more structure as it does more spirit, more awareness, more courage, and more determination to use both the means and the opportunities we already have.

The Spiritual Foundation

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

Doing pro-life work is not simply a response to a cause or a movement, an ideology or a political platform. It is a vocation, a charism of the Holy Spirit. The Christian pro-life commitment is a spirituality, which has particular characteristics and virtues, and which shapes the particular strategies and tactics that the pro-life activist carries out. This spirituality, taught by Priests for Life, roots the activist in his or her faith in God, and insures that pro-life activism will lead the activist back to God. It helps us keep our balance amidst the conflicting emotions we have in the pro-life battle, as we deal with successes and failures, as we rejoice in the gift of life and mourn the taking of life. Learn more about this pro-life spirituality at priestsforlife.org.

Silent No More Awareness Campaign

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

The Christian Faith advances through testimony. Jesus gives testimony to the Father; the Apostles give testimony to the Resurrection; Paul gives testimony to his conversion; Augustine gives testimony in his Confessions; you and I give and receive the testimony of how Jesus changes the lives He enters. That is why the Silent No More Awareness Campaign is so powerful and necessary. Men and women wounded by abortion and then healed are speaking out about the lie of abortion and the power of Jesus. They are giving testimony to why life must be protected. The power of their testimony is calling many to repentance and healing. If you feel called to give a testimony about your abortion, or know someone else who does, contact us at priestsforlife.org.

The “Plus Nine” Campaign

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

On the island of Malta, where unborn children are still protected, there is a campaign called “plus nine.” The idea is to make people aware that their unique and individual lives began not on the day of their birth but on the day they were conceived. That is the day they began to exist. Through this effort, the plus sign, and the number 9, are placed in as many places as possible, to make people think of this simple, powerful concept, which is based not simply on religious belief, but on biological fact. Some observe this fact by celebrating not only their birthday, but their “FirstDay,” nine months earlier. Indeed, the children in the womb are real people. Through simple efforts like “plus nine,” we can help people realize that it is wrong to kill them.

The Rosary

Monday, July 26th, 2010

The rosary is, without a doubt, one of the greatest devotions in history to be embraced by the Church. And it is a devotion strongly embraced by the pro-life movement. This is so for good reasons, because in the Hail Mary we praise a mother, and we worship the fruit of her womb. Our salvation began because a mother said yes to the life within her!

In the rosary we also say, “Pray for US sinners.” We don’t point the finger at others, but rather at ourselves. We know that sin is in the world, but we start by repenting of the sin within us. The pro-life movement is in fact a movement of repentance, of admitting we haven’t done enough. That is the best way to rebuild the Culture of Life.

Anti-abortion rally launches “Pro-Life Freedom Ride”

Invoking the memory of Martin Luther King Jr. and the civil rights movement, anti-abortion clergy members and their supporters gathered tonight at the BJCC to embark on a “Pro-Life Freedom Ride.”

The group, Priests For Life, plans to hold a prayer vigil Saturday morning at Birmingham’s Planned Parenthood before departing for Atlanta, where they will hold a service at King’s tomb.

King’s niece, Alveda King, is the director of African-American outreach for Priests for Life and was present at tonight’s rally.

“I have no doubt that if they were alive, my uncle Martin and my father A.D. would be with us on these Freedom Rides for the unborn,” she said in a statement issued prior to the rally.

Father Frank Pavone, national director of Priests for Life, told the audience tonight that they fight for “equal protection for our youngest brothers and sisters.”

The anti-abortion movement, Pavone said, is a natural extension of the civil rights crusade King championed until his death in 1968 as they seek “nonviolence against the unborn.”

Pavone said they reach out to women contemplating abortion or who have had an abortion.

“We are a movement that reaches out to those who are oppressed. Come to us, we will help you,” Pavone said.

“It’s not a matter of freedom of choice. It’s a matter of people who feel they have no freedom and no choice.”

First Pro-Life Freedom Ride Events This Weekend

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

Birmingham, AL – The nation’s first Pro-Life Freedom Ride for the Unborn launches tomorrow, to start with a rally/concert in Birmingham tonight and conclude with a prayer service at the tomb of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in Atlanta Saturday afternoon.

Dr. Alveda King, Director of African American Outreach for Priests for Life, will lead the Freedom Ride along with other civil rights activists, clergy, and the Priests for Life pastoral team. “The pro-life movement is the civil rights movement,” declares Dr. King. “We will ride this summer for the same cause as those who rode almost fifty years ago, that every single human being is worthy of equal protection under the law.”

Tonight’s 7:00 pm event at the Birmingham Jefferson County Convention Complex Theatre will feature speakers, music, and the premiere performance of “The Least of These,” a new pro-life anthem written and performed by Jamie Owens Collins.

Saturday at 9:00 am, Freedom Riders will hold a prayer vigil at the Planned Parenthood abortion center on Birmingham’s 27th Place South before boarding the bus for Atlanta at 11:30 am. At the ride’s conclusion, a prayer will be offered at the tomb of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

“This launches a new chapter in the pro-life movement,” adds Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life. “It’s time to cash the check from the vaults of freedom and justice in America on behalf of children in the womb.”

Anniversary of Humanae Vitae

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

On July 25, 1968, Pope Paul VI issued the encyclical letter Humanae Vitae, which means, “Of Human Life.” In that relatively short document, which you can find at priestsforlife.org, he outlines the Church’s vision of human life, marriage, and the connection between human love and the creative action of God.

Love and life are two very simple and very similar words, and they represent two gifts that go together. Love leads to life; it does not close it off. Love welcomes life, it is not afraid of it. Love and life go together because ultimately, they are simply two aspects of the one God.

One of the best ways you can observe this anniversary of Humanae Vitae is to read it. Go to priestsforlife.org and you will find the text along with helpful commentary.

The Numbers Speak for Themselves

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

Recent federal statistics show that 37% of African-American pregnancies end in abortion (compared to 19% of all pregnancies). Yet in national polling that Priests for Life commissioned among African Americans, 41% surveyed believed that Black women obtain fewer abortions than women of other races.

When they were made aware of the actual statistics, most of them said this was reason for concern. And they did not feel their religious leaders were making as much of an issue of this as they should. African Americans are ready to receive the help they need, and to encourage friends and relatives to choose life. When African American women are twice as likely as the average woman to get an abortion, it’s time to stand with them in love and concrete help.

Pro-Abortion Groups Protesting Freedom Rides

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

Washington, DC – Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, announced today that various pro-abortion groups in the Atlanta area are protesting the Freedom Rides, which will arrive in Atlanta on Saturday to pray at the tomb of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

“These groups accuse us of lying and distorting historical facts,” Fr. Frank said, “but the Freedom Rides intend to show the nation the truth about abortion. Abortionist Martin Haskell has said under oath, describing the abortion procedure, ‘The skull is brought out in fragments rather than as a unified piece.’ Do these pro-abortion fanatics really expect us to believe that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. would want that kind of violence legally protected?”

Dr. Alveda King, niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., declared, “I have no doubt that if they were alive, my uncle Martin and my father A.D. would be with us on these Freedom Rides for the unborn.”

The pro-abortion groups have sought to deny the pro-life groups the use of the King Center, and plan to have their own counter-demonstration.
