Spread the Word

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

In time for the pro-life Freedom Rides, Priests for Life has done professional research about the Black community and abortion. We found that Pregnancy Centers were little known, yet widely embraced among Blacks, who were nearly ten times as likely to have a positive view than a negative view of the centers. But they still don’t know about the locations, accessibility, and services of these centers.

It is no surprise that the abortion industry always tries to discredit these centers. They know that for each mother who brings her child to birth, the abortion industry has lost business. Let’s make known the work of pregnancy centers, and get people to them before they go to the abortion clinic.

This Weekend’s Pro-Life Freedom Ride Moved into High Gear

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

Birmingham, AL – As civil rights and pro-life activists gather for this weekend’s launch of the first Pro-Life Freedom Ride, new survey results show that raised awareness about abortion could have a profound impact among African Americans.

“Friday’s Birmingham rally and Saturday’s Pro-Life Freedom Ride are about spreading the message that an entire group of Americans, the unborn, is being denied the most fundamental civil right, the right to live,” said Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life. “These new poll results confirm that the more people learn about abortion and its impact on lives, families, and communities, the more they reject it.”

In conjunction with the Freedom Rides, Priests for Life is releasing the results of polling and focus group work it recently commissioned among the African-American community. Commenting on the results, The Polling Company/Woman Trend President Kellyanne Conway said, “African Americans are concerned about the scourge of abortion in their community, and respond to related facts and figures.” She continued, “Large majorities agree that every life should have a chance, regardless of race, socioeconomic status or circumstance. They support pregnancy resource centers and call for greater assistance by family, friends and religious and community leaders to help pregnant women and their babies.”

Saturday’s first Pro-Life Freedom Ride, led by Dr. Alveda King, niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Director of African American Outreach for Priests for Life, will be preceded Friday night by a concert rally at the Birmingham Jefferson County Convention Complex Theatre starting at 7:00 pm. Details at www.ProLifeFreedomRides.com.

Priests for Life is the nation’s largest Catholic pro-life organization dedicated to ending abortion and euthanasia.

The Symbolism Behind the Freedom Rides

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

In nineteen sixty one, civil rights activists held Freedom Rides to oppose segregation. The rides increased visibility and participation in the cause.

Now, to fight the injustice of abortion, pro-life activists will hold Freedom Rides for the unborn. These rides, led by Priests for Life and Dr. Alveda King, will symbolize the fact that all the varied activity of the pro-life movement can be summarized by the theme of freedom. Pro-life education frees people from ignorance; pregnancy centers and healing ministries free them from despair; legislative and political action frees them from unjust laws.

The first ride is this weekend, from Birmingham to Atlanta. Along with the rides, there are activities everyone can do locally. Find out more at priestsforlife.org.

Why we Pray to End Abortion

Monday, July 19th, 2010

Fr. Frank Pavone
National Director, Priests for Life

On Priests for Life’s Facebook cause “Pray to End Abortion” (see www.ProLifePrayers.com), I recently began an online series of two-minute videos exploring in detail why and how we pray to end abortion. (These videos can also be seen on my You Tube channel, www.youtube.com/frfrankpavone.)

I begin by asking the question, “Why do we pray at all, when God already knows His own will and intends to carry it out?” As we know, in the model for all prayer, the Our Father, our Lord taught us to pray, “Thy will be done.” All our prayer is based on that attitude. But certainly we don’t need to remind God to do things He’s going to forget.

So why do we pray? Because God wants us to be involved in what He is doing! Of course He’s going to do His will. But our prayers really change things, because God wills that His decisions will rely in part on whether we pray and act.

One of His firm decisions, which in fact represents the purpose of salvation history, is that He will destroy death. And we can actually hasten the process and spread the victory of life.

“The Lord will destroy death forever!” This marvelous declaration from Isaiah 25:8 should sustain us daily in our pro-life efforts. When we pray to end abortion, we are not just asking God to do us some favor or to grant a request. It’s much more momentous than that. When we ask Him to end abortion, we are pleading for the fulfillment of His great plan of conquering death.

It was about this that God first spoke when He promised in Genesis 3:15 (the “first gospel”) that the head of the serpent would be crushed. It was for this that Jesus Himself died and rose again; it is for this that every Church ministry exists. Proclaiming the Gospel means proclaiming life! As Paul explains in 1 Cor. 15, as in Adam all die, so in Christ shall all be made alive, but each in his own order. Christ is the first to rise from the dead; then all things are to be made subject to Him, and in Him, all will rise at the end of time. “Then shall come to pass the saying that is written: Death is swallowed up in victory!” (1 Cor. 15:54).

When Scripture talks about the new and eternal Jerusalem, urging us to look forward to that day when we will all be gathered around the throne, it declares, “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying out nor pain any more, for the former things have passed away” (Rev. 21:4). That is why we pray to end abortion, because we are caught up in a mighty dynamic of history, over which God presides. Our prayers are a great Amen to a process in which we are all involved and which culminates in the eternal victory of life!

Silent No More Awareness Campaign

Monday, July 19th, 2010

Even if you have never been involved in an abortion, you can help those who have had abortions to make their voices heard. The Silent No More Awareness Campaign mobilizes men and women who have lost children to abortion. The Campaign helps these men and women find healing and gives them opportunities, in organized gatherings, to share their testimonies of pain and healing.

You can serve as a “Regional Coordinator,” to organize events at which these women and men will speak up and say, “I Regret My Abortion” and “I Regret Lost Fatherhood.” These events reach the public with the message that abortion is a dead end, an empty promise, and that the doors of the Church are open to all who seek forgiveness. Become a Regional Coordinator – find out more at Silent No More Awareness dot org.

Life is Priceless

Friday, July 16th, 2010

In the thirteenth chapter of Ezekiel, we read these words, which the Lord told Ezekiel to speak to the people: “Will you ensnare the lives of my people but preserve your own? You have profaned me among my people for a few handfuls of barley and scraps of bread. By lying to my people, who listen to lies, you have killed those who should not have died.” The ongoing tragedy of abortion is an example of how lies kill those who should not have died. And the most fundamental lie behind abortion is not that the fetus isn’t a baby – rather, the lie is that one has a right to kill that baby. The lie is that a few handfuls of barley – that is, economic reasons – can be balanced against the value of a life.

There are Some Abortions Only You can Stop

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

Many people around the country are awakening to the tragedy of abortion and the need to join the pro-life movement. “What can I do to help?” is one of the questions I hear most frequently.

One very important thing you can do is to memorize the phone number of the Option Line, at which people can find alternatives to abortion. The number is one eight hundred, three nine five, help. Run jointly by Heartbeat International and Care Net, the largest networks of pregnancy centers, this hotline connects people with the alternatives closest to them. It’s one eight hundred, three nine five, help.

At some point you are going to be able to give that number to someone who needs it. Remember, there are some abortions only you can stop. Get involved today.

Our Focus is Prevention, Not Punishment

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

When abortion becomes illegal again, are we going to start throwing all the women who have abortions into jail?

No – the people who should go to jail in that case are the abortionists. This is how it worked before abortion became legal, and how it should work again.

After all, the woman who gets an illegal abortion is the best source of information and evidence needed to convict the abortionist. If she feared prosecution, she would never admit to the abortion, which would make it harder to find the abortionist.

This doesn’t excuse the woman’s wrongdoing; rather, it is the same principle by which the state grants immunity to a small-time drug user in exchange for information leading to a big-time drug dealer.

The pro-life movement is not interested in punishing women, but rather in stopping the killing.

Silence is Not an Option

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

Some people think that because men cannot get pregnant, they have no right to say anything about abortion.

But any human being, male or female, has the right and duty to speak up when someone’s life is in danger. Real men don’t stand around with their hands at their side when innocent babies are being ripped apart. They do something to defend these children.

Saying that only women should have any say about abortion is like saying that only Jews can speak about the Holocaust, or only Blacks can speak about segregation, or only children can speak about child abuse.

The truth is that every human being can speak about human rights, and has a duty to defend those rights when they are under attack.

A Twisted Perception of Freedom

Monday, July 12th, 2010

We sometimes hear from those on the other side of the pro-life battle that they want to work together with us to (quote) reduce the need for abortion. It is part of our pro-life mission to reduce the numbers of abortions, and in fact our goal is not just to reduce but to end it. We have to start by making it clear that there is no need for abortion in the first place. No abortion is necessary, neither medically, nor morally. Women get abortions not because of freedom of choice, but because they feel they have no freedom and no choice. Yet when the People of God provide better choices, the way is clear to help both mother and child. Yes, we will reduce abortions, but let’s never imply there is a need for abortion.
