Today’s Pro-Life Reflection

Thursday, March 13th, 2014

This reflection is taken from my book Pro-Life Reflections for Every Day, which is available for purchase at: ProLifeReflectionsForEveryDay.org

“We prepare to celebrate the Paschal Mystery with mind and heart renewed.” (Sacramentary, Preface of Lent 1).

Reflection: Lent is a season in which we prepare to celebrate Christ’s total victory over death, and our share in his life by baptism. Death was not part of God’s original plan for us. Scripture says that God created all things that they may have life, and that he does not rejoice in the destruction of the living.Standing with Christ in his new life means standing against whatever destroys life.

Prayer: Lord, in this Lenten season, strengthen and renew our commitment to be the People of Life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Today’s Pro-Life Reflection

Wednesday, March 12th, 2014

This reflection is taken from my book Pro-Life Reflections for Every Day, which is available for purchase at: ProLifeReflectionsForEveryDay.org

“They mutilated their sons and daughters by fire…till the Lord, in his great anger against Israel, put them away out of his sight” (2 Kings 17:17-18).

Reflection: The people of God inherited the Holy Land according to God’s promise but then offended him. Therefore, the Assyrians, swept through the land and brought them into exile. The shedding of innocent blood by child-sacrifice was one of the major reasons that this occurred.

Prayer: Lord, taught your people that their destiny on the land depended upon their fidelity to your covenant. Keep us faithful in our day, and free of the guilt of child sacrifice. Amen.

Priests for Life Takes HHS Mandate to Supreme Court!

Tuesday, March 11th, 2014

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, made the following announcement today:

“Priests for Life has taken the next step in our appeal to the US Supreme Court regarding the HHS mandate. Our response to the government’s objection to our appeal has been sent to the Court, and the Justices will decide, likely in a matter of days, whether to hear our case.

Our lawsuit is still on appeal in the Circuit Court in Washington DC, but in matters of particular public urgency, the law permits an appeal to the Supreme Court, even before the lower courts have finished hearing the case.

“Our reply brief was submitted through the American Freedom Law Center, and we are grateful to our attorneys, Robert Muise and David Yerushalmi, for their expertise and their continued commitment to this cause.

“As our reply brief states,

‘To ignore the gravity of the moral dilemma caused by the mandate, which is affecting countless lives (and souls), the uncertainty surrounding its enforcement, and the costs and burdens caused by this uncertainty is to ignore reality.’

“The Supreme Court has already agreed to hear arguments regarding the HHS mandate as applied to businesses, like Hobby Lobby. Inevitably, the court will also have to resolve the problem the mandate presents to religious groups, whose rights under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act are even less disputed. Therefore, we are asking them to resolve that issue now.

“As our brief also points out,

‘Moreover, what makes review of this case particularly compelling is the fact that this challenge goes to the very core of Priests for Life’s reason for existing as an organization. Consequently, Petitioners are well situated—and perhaps best suited—to challenge the mandate and its application to non-exempt, nonprofit religious organizations.’

“We continue to join in prayer and solidarity with the many other plaintiffs who have lawsuits against the mandate, and with all our supporters, on whose help we continue to rely. We will celebrate the victory together!”

Today’s Pro-Life Reflection

Tuesday, March 11th, 2014

This reflection is taken from my book Pro-Life Reflections for Every Day, which is available for purchase at: ProLifeReflectionsForEveryDay.org

“Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel” (Liturgy of Ash Wednesday)

Reflection: Lent is the time when we learn more deeply why we are pro-life. Turning away from sin means we put God above our “freedom of choice.” Believing in the Gospel means we believe in life, and reject the forces of death, including abortion.

Prayer: Lord, I fully repent of all the times I have given my choices more weight than yours. This Lent, renew my fidelity to you. May I be a living example of what it means to choose life, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Fr. Pavone to U.S. Senate: Americans Support Pain Capable Bill; Do You?

Friday, March 7th, 2014

NEW YORK, NY – A day after the release of a CNN poll that found 58 percent of Americans believe abortion should be illegal in some or all circumstances, Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, is calling on members of the U.S. Senate to take heed.

“The evidence is overwhelming that the tide is turning against legal abortion in America. A good first step, in response to this evidence, would be to protect children in the womb from the brutal dismemberment procedure that kills them halfway through pregnancy.

“Members of the U.S. Senate should pay close attention to what their constituents are saying, and vote in favor of the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act.”

Fr. Pavone Supports “Common Sense” Indiana Abortion Bill

Friday, March 7th, 2014

NEW YORK, NY  – Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, today issued a statement commending the Indiana Legislature for passing SB 292 and urging Gov. Mike Pence to sign the legislation into law.

“President Reagan once said of dealing with the Soviet Union, ‘Trust, but verify.’  All we can say with regard to dealings with abortionists is ‘Verify.’  It’s only common sense that the state should know that abortionists are obeying the law,” Father Pavone said. “This bill is sound legislation and we look forward to Gov. Pence making this bill a law.”

Indiana currently requires an abortionist to have local hospital admitting privileges or to have an agreement with a doctor who has such privileges to treat any post-abortion complication. The new bill would require an abortionist to provide to the state the written agreement he has with the hospital or the designated physician.

The legislation also would amend current law to require annual state inspections of abortion clinics instead of every two years and would require an abortion clinic to maintain a 24-hour hotline to answer emergency calls.

Lenten Pro-Life Prayer

Wednesday, March 5th, 2014

Lent is a season of repentance, which leads to life. Priests for Life urges all Christians to join us in saying the Lenten Pro-life Prayer, and making a special commitment to help others to see and defend the dignity of every human life, starting with
the unborn.

Father of all mercy,
We thank you for this season of grace and light.
We know that sin has blinded us.
Draw us ever closer to you, in prayer and penance.

Since you, O God, are light itself,
Give all your people a clearer understanding
Of what is sin, and what is virtue.

Grant in particular that we may see, as never before,
The profound dignity of every human life,
Including the vulnerable unborn children.

Give us grace to defend
Our brothers and sisters in the womb
By our prayers, our words,
And our self-sacrificing actions.

We pray through Christ our Lord. Amen.

24th Season of Defending Life to Premiere March 5 on EWTN

Tuesday, March 4th, 2014

NEW YORK, NY – EWTN viewers will get an inside look at the important work being done by Priests for Life and Gospel of Life Ministries when the 24th season of Defending Life has its premiere this week.JM

Hosted by Janet Morana, Executive Director of Priests for Life and co-founder of the Silent No More Awareness Campaign, and Father Denis Wilde, OSA, Associate Director of Priests for Life, the show will air at 2:30 a.m. ET every Wednesday and 11 p.m. ET every Thursday. Those tuning in by radio can hear the show at 6:30 p.m. Saturday and 6 p.m. Sunday.

The new season’s 13 episodes will introduce viewers to the Priests for Life Pastoral Team, including Bryan Kemper, the Youth Outreach Director, and Dr. Alveda King, Director of African American Outreach. Gospel of Life Ministries’ work around the globe will be highlighted by Bob Lalonde, Director of International Outreach for Priests for Life and Gospel of Life Ministries. Mr. Lalonde also will discuss the work of the Parliamentary Network for Critical Issues, which falls under Gospel of Life Ministries. Mrs. Morana’s book “Recall Abortion” will be explored.

Other guests to appear during the season will include Wendy Wright of the Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute, and Monica Miller of Citizens for a Pro-Life Society and author of “Abandoned,” who will discuss her work in recovering the bodies of aborted babies. Couples who have shared an abortion experience and now speak out as part of the Silent No More Awareness Campaign will be featured in the season’s final two episodes.

Defending Life was born from a conversation Mother Angelica and I had in 1994,” Father  Pavone recalled. “We were in her office discussing my pro-life work. She told me, ‘We need to have you tape a series on abortion!’ She picked up the phone right then and there, talked to one of the producers, and we scheduled it!”

Here’s some feedback Defending Life has received from viewers over the years.

“I had my own terrible experience with abortion years ago, but have experienced healing through Christ with His Church. I am a big fan of Father Pavone and enjoy watching Defending Life on EWTN. Thank you so much for your words of love and encouragement and hope.”

“I heard your TV program. I am a retired attorney and I work hard to save the lives of unborn children and the elderly. Your program put great arguments in my mind and I will use them.”

“The night before I was going to have an abortion, something woke me up and I saw your Defending Life program. Now I’m having my baby.”

Mrs. Morana noted that leaders of pro-life groups have told her they use the show to open their meetings and jump-start their planning on various projects.

“Every show contains good information that groups can adapt to their own needs,” she said. “Priests for Life also has resources that are available to the public to help individuals and groups increase their pro-life activism. In turn, we ask those groups to help us promote the show by announcing it on their social media sites and in their parishes.”

Today’s Pro-Life Reflection

Tuesday, March 4th, 2014

This reflection is taken from my book Pro-Life Reflections for Every Day, which is available for purchase at: ProLifeReflectionsForEveryDay.org

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted” — Matthew 5:4

Reflection: We are blessed, indeed, if we mourn over our sins, and over the evils in the world, like the daily killing of children by abortion. When is the last time we shed tears over the shedding of blood, and wept for the lives of these babies killed and moms and dads wounded? Let us pray for the gift of those tears!

Prayer: Lord, give me a broken heart over abortion. Give me the grace to do my part in ending this evil. And give me comfort, as you bring justice to the earth. Amen.

Today’s Pro-Life Reflection

Monday, March 3rd, 2014

This reflection is taken from my book Pro-Life Reflections for Every Day, which is available for purchase at: ProLifeReflectionsForEveryDay.org

“You shall not murder” (Exodus 20:13).

Reflection: God’s own finger wrote in stone the commandments he gave to Moses, and through Moses to us. “You shall not murder” refers to the deliberate act of taking an innocent human life, and is forever prohibited precisely because all life belongs to God, and God is life itself.

Prayer: Lord, we need your commandments. Your word is a light to our path, and sets the clear boundaries for our human community. Your prohibition on murder was literally written in stone and is as unchangeable as you are. Give all your people the gift of obedience. Amen.
