Priests for Life Marks 23rd Anniversary

Wednesday, April 30th, 2014

On this day, April 30, in 1991, Priests for Life received its official recognition from the church as a Private Association of the Faithful. In a letter issued by Archbishop John Quinn of San Francisco, the goals of the organization were praised and its bylaws recognized.

In the church, associations are brought about in two ways. Either the faithful, that is, members of the church, form the Association on their own initiative, or the hierarchy establishes it on their initiative. In the case of Priests for Life, it was the former. Because of the urgent nature of the pro-life battle and the opportunity that they saw, priests and laity took the opportunity to create an Association which would support primarily the clergy but also the whole church and the urgent task of bringing an end to abortion.

Since its recognition by Archbishop Quinn in 1991, Priests for Life has been repeatedly praised the recommended by members of the hierarchy throughout the world, including by various agencies of the Vatican. This is not hard to understand, given the centrality of the church’s mission in defense of life, and especially given the pontificate of St. John Paul II, who emphasized in so many of his talks and writings that the right to life is the most basic and fundamental right, and the condition of all other rights, and that therefore its defense is a priority.

Over these two and a half decades, Priests for Life has not only grown but also diversified in its mission and structure, and is now a family of ministries, touching on every major aspect of the pro-life effort. In recent years, Priests for Life has worked with the Vatican and with Cardinal Timothy Dolan to expand its canonical structure to accommodate the broader range of activities that it has undertaken with great fruit. This process is continuing, and we look forward to an even more effective service to the church and to the unborn in the years to come.

Hobby Lobby Stands With Priests for Life!

Tuesday, April 29th, 2014

STATEN ISLAND, NY – Following a phone call today with Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, Hobby Lobby CEO David Green expressed his solidarity with Priests for Life and the other the religious, non-profit groups who, like Hobby Lobby, are challenging the HHS Mandate.  Mr. Green released the following statement:

“The religious freedom of believers of all denominations is under attack. Our family therefore joins in prayerful support of the Priests for Life case against the HHS mandate. As our Hobby Lobby case represents the concerns of businesses, so the Priests for Life case represents the concerns of the religious non-profit groups. Together, we stand against this injustice, and for the law of God.”

Father Pavone commented, “I was proud to pray outside the U.S. Supreme Court on March 25 as Mr. Green and his family were inside. We are grateful to Mr. Green and his family for their support of us, as both of our organizations continue to fight for the freedom of religion guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution. As Americans, we have to stand together to protect our freedoms.”

Priests for Life is the lead party in a lawsuit against the HHS mandate that will have oral arguments on May 8 in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia. A rally in front of the courthouse is planned from 9 to 11 a.m. that day. Fr. Pavone praises Oklahoma governor, legislators on new law regarding gravely ill unborn babies

Tuesday, April 29th, 2014

STATEN ISLAND, NY — Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, today praised Gov. Mary Fallin and Oklahoma lawmakers for enacting legislation to ensure that a woman who receives a dreaded diagnosis for her unborn child also receives information on available care for her and her baby.

“All too often, when a mother receives the news that her unborn child likely faces a brief lifespan after birth, she faces incredible pressure to have that child killed,” said Fr. Pavone.  “For years, we have been promoting perinatal hospice care, and this new law gives countless women that loving alternative to abortion.

“Governor Fallin and the Oklahoma legislature are to be commended for their compassionate and caring efforts to help mothers and fathers facing such heart-wrenching crises.”

Fr. Frank concluded, “When a child is very ill before birth, just as after, what matters most is not how much time the child has to live, but how much love we have to give that child.”

Priests for Life Ministry to be Dedicated to Saint John Paul II

Priests for Life, meets with Pope John Paul II
in the Vatican.

NEW YORK — Speaking from the international headquarters of Priests for Life in New York City, Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director, announced today that the ministry of Priests for Life will be dedicated in a special way to the protection of Saint John Paul II, who was canonized yesterday.

“I was privileged to converse with Pope John Paul II multiple times about the work of Priests for Life, and he expressed strong support and encouragement,” recalled Fr. Frank, who worked at the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for the Family under the pontificate of John Paul II. The Pontifical Council for the Family fosters the pro-life work of the Catholic Church.

“Given that connection, and given the priority he placed on the defense of innocent human life from the evil of abortion, it is highly appropriate that we place our entire ministry and activity under his special patronage,” Fr. Frank explained.

A special ceremony to carry out this action will take place at the next general meeting of the entire Pastoral Team of Priests for Life on Wednesday, May 21, 2014. At that time, the Priests for Life team will issue a more detailed statement about the importance of taking this step.

“All who do pro-life work need his intercession today more than ever, both to withstand the attacks that come from all directions and also to avoid the temptation to think that somehow the defense of the unborn should be less of a priority than other issues. Both for the Church and the state, there is one moral imperative today that stands above all the rest: to end abortion,” Fr. Frank concluded.

Today’s Pro-Life Reflection

Sunday, April 27th, 2014

This reflection is taken from my book, Pro-Life Reflections for Every Day, which is available for purchase at: ProLifeReflectionsForEveryDay.org

“Everyone who does evil hates the light and avoids coming near the light so that his misdeeds may not be exposed” – John 3:20.

Reflection: A key priority of our pro-life movement must be to expose the corruption of the abortion industry. Making abortion legal never made it safe, and keeping it legal can never keep it safe. You can’t practice vice virtuously. If you are willing to kill a baby, you will be willing to do many other kinds of evil as well.

Prayer: Lord, bring into the light the evils being done behind closed doors in abortion centers, that our nation may repent and be healed, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Today’s Pro-Life Reflection

Saturday, April 26th, 2014

This reflection is taken from my book, Pro-Life Reflections for Every Day, which is available for purchase at: ProLifeReflectionsForEveryDay.org

“An angel of the Lord descended from heaven, came and rolled back the stone, and sat upon it.” (Matthew 28:2)

Reflection: The stone is what sealed human beings in the grave. By sitting on it, the angel says that death is conquered – not only Jesus’ death, but all death. The stone is not going to roll back; it cannot any longer hold humanity captive to the grave. Our destiny is now the heights of heaven.

Prayer: Alleluia! The Kingdom of death has been overturned! The power of abortion, euthanasia, and other evils has already been defeated! Lord, your power is greater than death. May Easter give me confidence to be a witness to Life!

Today’s Pro-Life Reflection

Friday, April 25th, 2014

This reflection is taken from my book, Pro-Life Reflections for Every Day, which is available for purchase at: ProLifeReflectionsForEveryDay.org

“At dawn on the first day of the week…there was a violent earthquake.” (Matthew 28:1-2)

Reflection: In the Old Testament, earthquakes are a sign of the coming of God, the breaking in of the new age in which God’s kingdom will flourish.
That is what happens, of course, at the Resurrection. A new chapter of history now begins, in which the risen life of Christ is accepted by believers and overcomes humanity’s slavery to death.

Prayer: Father, you have shaken up the world with the Risen life of Christ, and you have shaken us loose from the stranglehold of death. In the light of the resurrection, may we continue to extend your victory over death!

Fr. Pavone: Pro-lifers are winning the pain capable battle

Thursday, April 24th, 2014

STATEN ISLAND,  NY – Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, today praised Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant for signing into law a bill to protect six-to-nine-month-old unborn babies.

“The abortion lobby believes that the painful dismemberment of babies should be allowed up until birth.  Mississippi, an increasing number of other states, the U.S. House of Representatives, and the American people disagree,” said Fr. Pavone.  “Governor Bryant and the Mississippi legislature are to be commended for their compassion in enacting the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. The protection of babies in the womb based on their capacity to feel pain is the next major battleground for the pro-life movement, and one that we are already winning.”

Today’s Pro-Life Reflection

Thursday, April 24th, 2014

This reflection is taken from my book, Pro-Life Reflections for Every Day, which is available for purchase at: ProLifeReflectionsForEveryDay.org

“You have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God” (Colossians 3:3)

Reflection: On Easter, many throughout the world are baptized into the Church, and those already baptized renew the vows of their baptism.
By baptism, we are immersed in the new life of Christ. Thanks to baptism, God looks at us through the eyes of His Son, and says, ‘You are my child; you died on the cross, therefore you will rise from the dead.’

Prayer: Father, thank you for immersing me into the death and resurrection of your Son! Thank you for making me part of the People of Life!

Fr. Pavone Lauds Oklahoma Governor, Legislature for Enacting New Abortion Law

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2014

STATEN ISLAND, NY – Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, today praised Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin for signing into law a measure that will enforce the federal Food and Drug Administration’s approved protocol for the administration of the abortion technique RU-486.

“The Food and Drug Administration set guidelines for the use of RU-486, and from the beginning the abortion industry has shown little or no regard for these guidelines, because they are more interested in abortion than in women’s health,” said Fr. Pavone.  “Obviously, we do not want any babies killed, whether by RU-486, which starves them, or by surgical forceps that dismember them. But Gov. Fallin and the state legislature are to be commended for trying to make this deadly procedure a little less dangerous for women.”

Oklahoma’s new law takes effect November 1. Abortionists have been using so-called “medical” abortions on women up to the ninth week of pregnancy when FDA guidelines restrict their use to the first seven weeks.
