Today’s Pro-Life Reflection

Friday, May 23rd, 2014

This reflection is taken from my book, Pro-Life Reflections for Every Day, which is available for purchase at: ProLifeReflectionsForEveryDay.org

Let everyone submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which derives from God” – Romans 13:1

Reflection: Abortion supporters say the government has no business telling us what we can do in the bedroom. But laws do prohibit theft, statutory rape, child abuse, or murder in bedrooms. Moreover, abortions do not occur in the bedroom. They are committed in publicly advertised facilities, and they tear little children apart. The government does in fact have the duty to stop such violence.

Prayer: Lord, I thank you for those who serve you in public office. Give our legislators wisdom to enact laws that preserve the rights of all. Amen.

Fr. Pavone: New polls show voters will demand more protection for the unborn

Thursday, May 22nd, 2014

STATEN ISLAND, NY — Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, issued the following statement today about two polls on abortion attitudes that were released this week.

“The new Gallup poll on abortion, released today, and the Politico poll released earlier this week contain much good news for our nation’s unborn because they show support for additional measures to protect babies in the womb.

“The poll by Politico shows that support for measures like the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act will be strong this November,” said Fr. Pavone.  “When 80 percent of voters in highly contested states and Congressional districts say they want babies protected from late-term abortions, if not most or all abortions, it’s pretty clear who the extremists are – those who support abortion on demand.”

He continued: “The Gallup poll shows that 50 percent of Americans want some restrictions on abortion, with 21 percent of those saying it should be illegal in all circumstances. These are good numbers. Half of all Americans clearly understand that abortion on demand through all nine months of pregnancy is wrong. It gives me hope that, at the very least, we will soon be able to protect babies from the brutality of a late-term abortion.”

Father Pavone noted that both polls showed a minority of Americans – 28 percent in the Gallup poll and 19 percent in Politico survey — favoring legal abortion at any time and for any reason.

“These findings are consistent with what we have seen for many years,” Father Pavone said. “Most Americans reject most abortions. It is simply false to say that most Americans support Roe v. Wade, because that decision brought us the extreme policy of abortion on demand, which most of the public rejects.”

Today’s Pro-Life Reflection

Thursday, May 22nd, 2014

This reflection is taken from my book, Pro-Life Reflections for Every Day, which is available for purchase at: ProLifeReflectionsForEveryDay.org

“The human being is to be respected and treated as a person from the moment of conception” – Donum Vitae, 1

Reflection: Adult stem-cell research has been going on for decades, and has proven helpful in treating various diseases. This research does not kill anyone. Embryonic stem cell research, on the other hand, only began in 1998, and does involve killing a new human life in order to obtain the cells. The number of diseases that have been successfully treated with embryonic stem cells is zero.

Prayer: Lord, you love those who are unseen. I pray for the tiniest human beings. Free them from exploitation, and free us all from moral blindness. Amen.

Today’s Pro-Life Reflection

Wednesday, May 21st, 2014

This reflection is taken from my book, Pro-Life Reflections for Every Day, which is available for purchase at: ProLifeReflectionsForEveryDay.org

“The requirements of the Law are inscribed in their hearts; and their own conscience will also bear witness for them” Romans 2:15

Reflection: Since the early ’90′s, over half of the freestanding abortion facilities in the United States have closed. Abortionists admit that one of the key reasons is that fewer doctors are willing to do abortions. Despite all their money and influence, the abortion advocates have not succeeded in removing the stigma from abortion. And they never will.

Prayer: Thank you, Father, for writing your law on our hearts. Though it is often obscured by many things, it persists. May it strengthen us all in right conduct. Amen.

In time for Father’s Day, a new focus on men and abortion

Monday, May 19th, 2014

Father Watching His Infant SleepTurning the Hearts of Fathers is a new initiative of the Silent No More Awareness Campaign to enlist church leaders to share the good news of forgiveness and recovery to men who have experienced abortion loss. Silent No More is a joint campaign of Priests for Life and Anglicans for Life.

The new project has been launched in time for Father’s Day, because men who have lost a child or children to abortion are often more acutely aware of that loss on the holiday that celebrates children’s love and gratitude for their fathers.

“We have learned from fathers who have taken part in an abortion that their experience damaged them as men,” said Kevin Burke, Pastoral Associate of Priests for Life and coordinator of Turning the Hearts of Fathers. “Abortion attacks the fundamental nature of the gift men bring to the family:  a father’s love and protection of the children entrusted to his care. Violating this fundamental law of God can later weaken men in their vocation as husbands, fathers and spiritual leaders at home, in church and in their communities.”

Burke said priests and ministers are often wary of addressing the subject in their ministry and preaching for fear of hurting or alienating those in the congregation who have lost children to abortion. Turning the Hearts of Fathers addresses these concerns with information and resources to reach out with sensitivity and effectiveness.   At the website FatherhoodForever.org, clergy will find resources to help them preach about the topic, announcements that can be included in the weekly bulletin and information on abortion recovery programs.

“What a great blessing it will be for our families, churches and nation when the millions of men involved in abortion decisions turn to Christ for healing and restoration,” Burke said.

Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life and Pastoral Director of the new initiative, noted that the participation of priests and ministers across the country is vital for the project to succeed.

“Many aspects of abortion are very sensitive, but that doesn’t mean they should be ignored,” Father Pavone said. “The impact of abortion on the lives of our people is all the more reason a shepherd must pay attention to these wounds. Ministry involves confronting problems that provoke emotions. Ministry regarding abortion involves nothing less than life and death.”

Since the launch of the Silent No More Awareness Campaign in 2003, 5,715 women and men have shared their testimonies publicly at over 1,325 gatherings in 48 states and 17 countries. More than 14,979 people representing 77 countries are registered to be Silent No More.  Raising awareness about the hurtful aftermath of abortion and the help that is available to cope with the pain are two of the Campaign’s goals.  The Campaign has over 2,014 testimonies posted here, with over 293 that are shared via video!

Today’s Pro-Life Reflection

Monday, May 19th, 2014

This reflection is taken from my book, Pro-Life Reflections for Every Day, which is available for purchase at: ProLifeReflectionsForEveryDay.org

“If both you and the king who reigns over you follow the Lord your God—good!” (1 Samuel 12:14).

Reflection: Pro-abortion politicians will say to us, “My office does not deal with abortion.” But their position on abortion tells us what they think of government: does it protect rights that come from God, or does it give those rights itself? Whether one will vote on abortion is beside the point. Before we cast our vote for our leaders, we need to know what kind of authority they think we are giving them.

Prayer: Lord, keep our leaders aware of the difference between their role and yours. Amen.

Today’s Pro-Life Reflection

Friday, May 16th, 2014

This reflection is taken from my book, Pro-Life Reflections for Every Day, which is available for purchase at: ProLifeReflectionsForEveryDay.org

“The blind man said to him, ‘Rabbi, let me receive my sight’“ – Mark 10:51.

Reflection: People change when they see abortion. One wrote, “I was horrified by the gallery of photos of those tiny innocents – murdered, but I’m glad to have seen them. No one can truly form an opinion on abortion without seeing the horror. I had no idea the practice was so brutal.”

Prayer: Lord, sometimes it is only when we see evil that we are able to fully appreciate the good. Give your people courage to face the evils around us, that we may have greater strength to fight them in Your Name. Amen.

Today’s Pro-Life Reflection

Thursday, May 15th, 2014

This reflection is taken from my book, Pro-Life Reflections for Every Day, which is available for purchase at: ProLifeReflectionsForEveryDay.org

“The authorities are God’s servants, and they devote themselves to this service.” (Romans 13:6)

Reflection: As Martin Luther King Jr. said, the law cannot get the white man to love me, but it can stop him from lynching me. Laws restrain evildoing. They also have power to shape minds and hearts. When our children learn in school that something is legal, they are learning that such a thing is right. Whether regarding abortion or anything else, both hearts and laws must be changed.

Prayer: Father, give us a healthy respect for the power of law, and a Spirit-filled determination to shape law according to your will. Amen.

Today’s Pro-Life Reflection

Wednesday, May 14th, 2014

This reflection is taken from my book, Pro-Life Reflections for Every Day, which is available for purchase at: ProLifeReflectionsForEveryDay.org

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” (Genesis 1:1-2)

Reflection: The Spirit of God brought life and light out of chaos and darkness. The Holy Spirit is “the Lord and Giver of Life,” and this is true both on a natural and supernatural level. To worship the Holy Spirit, then, demands that we stand against all that destroys life.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, breathe on us and renew within us the fullness of life and the strength to defend it. Amen!

Today’s Pro-Life Reflection

Tuesday, May 13th, 2014

This reflection is taken from my book, Pro-Life Reflections for Every Day, which is available for purchase at: ProLifeReflectionsForEveryDay.org

“There is one mediator between God and man, Christ Jesus, himself a man” (1 Timothy 2:5).

Reflection: Jesus is humanity’s only mediator with God precisely because he is both God and human, and his humanity comes from Mary. All her importance flows from her Son, and our worship of the Son naturally leads to honoring his mother. Marian devotion teaches us something about our pro-life commitment. Mother and child belong together. To hurt one is to hurt the other; to love one is to love the other.

Prayer: Mary, thank you for being the mother of Jesus, who now shares our humanity. Teach us to honor every mother and child. Amen.
