Grown Up Christmas List

One of the Christmas songs playing on the radio this time of year is called “Grown Up Christmas List.” The singer says that the list is not for herself, but for a world in need. This list includes, “no more lives torn apart, that wars may never start…that right would always win.”

Christmas is a time for wishing for good things, because we know that God has given us His Son — and if He has gone that far, as St. Paul declares, how will He not give us everything else besides?

Let us increase our longing, then, that every life may be secure, safe from the violence of abortion and euthanasia, and from the ravages of poverty, crime, and war. Let us write our Christmas list with confidence.

Join Us in Saying an Advent Prayer for Life

As we enter the Advent season, Priests for Life invites all believers to pray a special Advent prayer for life, which you can find on our web site. The prayer reminds us that the Savior came to end all oppression, and therefore asks God to give us new strength to build a culture of life, in which the unborn will be freed from the oppression of abortion.

The Advent prayer for life also reminds us that welcoming Jesus as He comes enables us to welcome the children He sends into our world. It likewise reminds us of Jesus’ second coming, and asks that we may be ready for it. Please join the Advent prayer for life found at priestsforlife.org and invite your family, pro-life group, school and parish to take part in it.

[Bishop Fabian Wendelin Bruskewitz] is happy to endorse the book, which has something to inspire anyone who reads it. All aspects of the abortion issue are addressed in these powerful and precise essays. This book is to provide a boost of vitality to those who love and defend innocent life. — Rev. Andrew Menke, Vice Chancellor

Your book “Ending Abortion” is like dew on the parched landscape in America. It will educate and encourage all who read it to continue the battle for life with renewed vigor. With kindest personal regards, I am Most Rev. James C. Timlin, Bishop Emeritus of Scranton

Fr. Pavone’s new book helps us to strengthen our convictions with clear teaching and compelling motivation. — Most Reverend Anthony M. Pilla, Bishop Emeritus of Cleveland

Your Book will be a special blessing for all those committed to the pro-life movement, giving us much food for thought, insights from experiences over the recent decades, and an agenda with concrete ideas and suggestions for the future. — Adam Cardinal Maida, Archbishop of Detroit

I am happy to endorse your work and, in particular, this new book…A critical challenge for us today is transforming a culture of death into a culture of life. In his thoughtful book, Fr. Frank Pavone offers us a very helpful and wide-ranging set of essays on promoting life in our contemporary society. The book: Ending Abortion, Not Just Fighting It, is both encouraging and challenging for all of us who are concerned about respect for human life in American society. — Most Reverend Francis Kane, Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago

Father Pavone’s book, Ending Abortion, Not Just Fighting It, gives a very informative pro-life summary of the prayerful and pastoral ways of dealing with all the critical issues that are connected to the evil of abortion. — Bishop Michael Pfeifer, O.M.I. of San Angelo, TX

The book is indeed an important resource in promoting a deeper understanding of the need for all people to work for the protection of all human life, especially at its earliest and most vulnerable stage. This book also comes at an important time in our history, when the value of life is denigrated at all levels of society. As people who recognize the image and likeness of God in every human life, we must as the Church work to protect those whose voice is ignored and whose identity is disregarded. I am confident that your words and your books will help support that work, and through your efforts and your leadership, we will indeed come closer to the goal of a nation that protects all people and all life from the moment of conception to natural death. I commend you for the fine work you are doing in prompting the pro-life movement, both at a local and at a national level, and I hope that through this book and our shared ministry of preaching the Gospel of Life, more people will actively join the cause and become activists in the pro-life struggle. Thank you again for the gift of this book, and I wish you continued success in contributing to a world where the protection of all life remains our goal. — Most Reverend Arthur J. Serratelli, S.T.D., S.S.L., D.D., Bishop of Paterson, NJ

I commend you for your courageous efforts for the cause of life. And I am happy to provide a few words of commendation for your book and your continuous, persistent labors of love for the unborn: “The Right-to Life of the Innocent Unborn is the premiere civil rights issue of our time, and Father Pavone stands as one of the principal heralds of this important movement. His book Ending Abortion, Not Just Fighting it, is a clarion call for coordinated and consistent efforts to end abortion. I recommend this book highly for those who want to learn more about the why’s and how’s of supporting pro-life efforts and desire to help reverse the lamentable Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision of 1973.” Thank you, Father Pavone, for this very helpful and very readable book! — Most Reverend Robert J. Baker, S.T.D., Bishop of Birmingham, AL

Thank you for addressing this critical issue and for all that you do to promote a respect for all human life from the moment of conception to the point of natural death. — Most Reverend David A. Zubik, Bishop of Pittsburgh, PA

Father Frank Pavone has been a consistent and strong leader in the pro-life movement for many years, even in the face of the many obstacles which we face, he has remained steadfast and clear of vision. This new book reminds us that abortion is not simply about a social problem, it is about relationships. People are involved. The person of the unborn. The persons of the mother and father. The persons of those who run abortion mills and perform or participate in abortions, as well as those of us who demonstrate and teach against this tremendous evil which is being permitted by our government at various levels. This thoughtful book will help many to recognize the various aspects of the evil which is encroaching upon us, and, it does this from a very positive vantage point, i.e. that we are not just fighting abortion: we plan, with God’s help, to eliminate it. — Archbishop John J. Myers, Archbishop of Newark

Congratulations to you on your accomplishments. I pray that your insights will motivate all people to save the lives of millions of unborn infants. You are remembered in all of my prayers every day.
Bishops Joseph Howze, Bishop Emeritus of Biloxi, MS

You will be repaid at the resurrection of the just

Jesus said, “When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. You should be happy that they cannot repay you, for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the just.” This command to love and serve those who cannot repay us strengthens our resolve to love and serve the unborn children, who are in danger of being killed by abortion. They cannot know right now that we are helping them and speaking up for them. They cannot repay us. These are the ones we should love and serve above all.

“My only sibling was aborted”

In the course of my full time travels around the country for the cause of life, I recently met a woman who said to me, “I am alive because my mom changed her mind. She wanted to abort me but my dad talked her out of it. When she married another man and got pregnant, my only sibling was aborted.” People like her have a lot to be thankful of. So many others I meet explain how they too were almost aborted. The issue of abortion is not abstract. It’s about living or dying, surviving or being murdered. And it reminds us that the first thing we have to give thanks for is the gift of life itself. Let’s thank God, not just privately but publicly, for our lives and the lives of others.

Offering Our Prayers for the Unborn

The month of November is dedicated in a particular way to praying for the dead. This includes children who died before birth. These children did not have the opportunity to be baptized; the Church teaches, however, that we can hope for their salvation, and that we can entrust them with confidence to the mercy of God. The Lord loves these children even more than we do, and provides in mysterious ways for them to take hold of the eternal life we have in Christ. Praying for these children is an important way in which we recognize them as real persons, and in which we make reparation for the brutal way in which some of them were treated by abortion. If you want Masses offered for unborn children, simply send me their names at www.priestsforlife.org

God Alone is Lord of Life

Each Nov 1 the Church observes All Saints’ Day, and many of those saints were martyrs. But what is the difference between martyrdom and suicide? It is the difference between giving and taking. In suicide, one takes his own life, pretending to be the master of it. In martyrdom, one realizes that only God is master of his life, and therefore that he cannot hold on to that life at the cost of betraying God. Martyrdom is the very opposite of suicide, because the martyr declares that God alone is Lord of Life, and that being faithful to Him is worth any price, including death.
As we honor the martyrs and all the saints, let’s recommit ourselves to building a world that acknowledges God alone as the Master of life and death.

We must protect life at every stage

The service that the Church carries out to humanity embraces life at every stage and in every circumstance. Our “ethic of life” is indeed consistent, because love is indivisible. To fail to respect a human life at any stage of its development is to break the principle that holds it sacred at every stage of its development.

That is why one may never use our duty to life at one stage as a justification for destroying it at another. Some have tried to do this in the health care debate, by their willingness to expand child killing in the process of helping adults get medical treatment. This approach is self defeating, because as soon as we tolerate the killing of children, we undercut every rationale to provide health care to both children and adults.

The Power to Save Lives

We are all familiar with the power of ultrasound images have to save lives. Now we have a tool far more powerful than ultrasound. It is called embryoscopy. Though rarely used, this procedure has yielded powerful video footage of the unborn child. A tiny camera is placed up against the amniotic sac to yield full color video of the child from about four to twelve weeks old. A video containing this footage has been made which has such strong medical, secular credentials that it has won eleven awards and been endorsed by National Geographic. Now Priests for Life is distributing this video within the pro-life community and seeks to get it into all the churches, pregnancy centers, and schools across America. Praying for a Culture of Life

In their pastoral plan for pro-life activities, the Catholic bishops of the United States have asked that at every mass a prayer be offered for the defense of human life.

To help parishes fulfill this request, Priests for Life prepares an entire set of Prayers of the Faithful for each Sunday of the year, based on the readings for that Sunday.

Among these petitions each week is a prayer for an end to abortion and other forms of violence, and for the growth of a Culture of Life.

We also provide homily hints and bulletin inserts for each Sunday.

You can find these resources at priestsforlife.org, and we also provide them weekly via email.
Help your pastor today by bringing him these weekly pro-life resources for the liturgy. Visit priestsforlife.org for information.
