Fr. Pavone to receive Henry Hyde Award from American Catholic Press

Friday, October 12th, 2012

Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, will be honored with the 2012 Henry Hyde Award at the annual benefit dinner of the American Catholic Press (ACP). The dinner will take place Oct. 26 in Flossmoor, Ill.

The award named for the late chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, a longtime advocate for the unborn, grew out of another award, the Gratiam Dei Award, bestowed annually by the ACP and awarded to Illinois Rep. Henry Hyde in 1998. Subsequent honorees included Joe Scheidler of the Pro-Life Action League and Norma McCorvey, the “Janet Roe” of the Roe vs. Wade decision. After Rep. Hyde’s death in 2007, the organization decided to dedicate a second award, in his name, to those who work tirelessly in the pro-life movement.

“The prestigious Henry Hyde Award will be presented to Father Frank Pavone, who has advocated the pro-life cause for many years,” said Father Michael Gilligan, executive director. “Father Frank is known nationwide through publications, articles, media, and public speaking. His non-profit organization, Priests for Life, is wholly dedicated to the pro-life cause.”

The Cleary Family of Chicago will be this year’s recipients of the Gratiam Dei Award for their decades of service to area schools and churches and their support of ACP.

American Catholic Press was incorporated in 1972 as a not-for-profit. Its publications include the Leaflet Missal, “Parish Liturgy” magazine, “Diocesan Dialogue” and numerous books, all aimed at promoting liturgical renewal of the Latin Rite of the Catholic Church. The annual benefit dinner helps to fund ACP’s ongoing commitment to provide Leaflet Missal prayerbooks to shut-ins.

“I am honored to be receiving this award named for a man whom I was privileged to know personally, and with whom I discussed the cause of life numerous times,” Father Pavone said. “Congressman Hyde inspired me and millions of others. He was not simply a politician, but a statesman, and embodied the kind of people we need to elect to public office.”

Father Pavone hails House vote to repeal Affordable Care Act

Wednesday, July 11th, 2012

STATEN ISLAND, NY – Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, issued the following statement today following the House vote to repeal the federal Affordable Care Act.

“The health care law that President Obama signed two years ago and the U.S. Supreme Court upheld last month presents grave threats to unborn babies and imposes intolerable burdens on every citizen who valueshuman life. I commend the House of Representatives for voting for repeal.”

“As it stands now,” Father Pavone continued, “Americans in 34 states will have to pay an abortion premium if they are enrolled in insurance plans through their state exchange. Also, thanks to a secrecy clause in the law, insurance plans and state exchanges cannot disclose the monthly cost of the abortion premium. This is an injustice that every American should oppose, whether they are pro-life or not. This is not the American way.”

The Affordable Care Act also includes the Health and Human Services mandate that employers, including faith-based organizations like Priests for Life, provide contraception, abortifacient drugs and sterilization services to their employees free of charge. Priests for Life in February filed one of the first lawsuits against this unjust mandate, and that suit is continuing.

“I am and always have been in favor of health care reform,” Father Pavone said. “But the concerns that Priests for Life has voiced from the beginning about the law in its current form, particularly regarding abortion and the HHS mandate, override everything. “

Priests for Life is the nation’s largest Catholic pro-life organization dedicated to ending abortion and euthanasia. For more information, visit www.priestsforlife.org.

Happy Independence Day

Wednesday, July 4th, 2012

Independence Day is a celebration of life. In the liturgy for Independence Day, we read this prayer: “Jesus spoke to men a message of peace, and taught us to live as brothers. His message took form in the vision of our fathers as they fashioned a nation where men might live as one. This message lives on in our midst as a task for men today and a promise for tomorrow. We thank you, Father, for your blessings in the past, and for all that with your help we must yet achieve.”  Each time I say that beautiful prayer in the Mass of July 4, I reflect on the work that you and I do together to restore protection for the unborn. No work can be more American than that.

Prayer of Thanks for our Nation’s Independence

Tuesday, June 26th, 2012

The celebration of our nation’s independence is an important moment to reflect on the blessings of God, the meaning of freedom, and the task to expand the blessings of freedom to our unborn brothers and sisters who are still enslaved by our nation’s abortion policies.

That’s why Priests for Life begins today a special novena of prayer for our nation, in preparation for Independence Day. You can download the prayer at priestsforlife.org.

The prayer reminds us that our Founding Fathers took inspiration from the Gospel in founding this nation, and that our task is to secure liberty and justice not just for some, but for all, including the unborn.

Please visit priestsforlife.org, download the Independence Day Novena, and invite your family, pro-life groups, schools and parishes to take part in it.

You Can’t Practice Vice Virtuously

Wednesday, August 17th, 2011

Thanks to the undercover work of Operation Rescue, with which Priests for Life collaborates closely, nine abortion practitioners in Texas are on the ropes for misconduct or upcoming investigations into whether their abortion practice is violating various laws and patient rights.

The allegations range from mishandling private patient medical records and information, violating informed consent laws, disregarding the 24 hour waiting period, improper disposal of biohazardous medical waste, including human tissue, instructing minors to cross state lines to avoid Texas parental notification laws, and mishandling of drugs and prescription forms.

As I always say, you can’t practice vice virtuously. If someone kills babies, he or she doesn’t care much about how medical records are handled. The pro-life movement needs to continue to uncover the shady activities of these abortion mills, and prosecute the wrongdoing that occurs.
