Where Wisdom Lies

Fr. Frank Pavone with Troy NewmanTroy Newman and I have worked closely together for many years as colleagues in national pro-life leadership. We have collaborated on many projects, including behind the scenes advice and encouragement on many undercover projects, including the most recent one of Planned Parenthood. Troy is completely committed to the principles at the foundation of our movement, including that of non-violence. Those who see him as an enemy do so not because he is some kind of violent fanatic, but precisely because he is effective at what he does, namely, researching the weaknesses of the abortion industry and then using the legal system to make them accountable for their unscrupulous and dangerous practices.

Troy is not being allowed in Australia not because there’s something wrong with him, but because there’s something wrong with those who are denying him entrance. And we’ve seen this pattern in other countries too. What tremendous tolerance these governments show to viewpoints and activities that might rip the mask off their mindless devotion to keeping the status quo on the greatest holocaust of human history.

Added to the completely baseless blocking of his international travel is the attempt to prevent him from traveling within the United States. That is simply outrageous, and an immediate correction and apology is needed on the part of whoever made that attempt. The Australian government, needless to say, has no jurisdiction here. Moreover, the American authorities have some explaining to do when they start limiting the movement of their own citizens. And those of us in pro-life leadership will be particularly vigilant regarding any attempt to limit our freedom because some people give too much credence to the smears and slanders that are regularly leveled against us because of our role in leading the movement against abortion. I know what those smears are like, having been the object of public protests organized by sitting government officials, leaders of Planned Parenthood, NARAL, Catholics for Choice, and other groups who have accused me of fostering violence.

But as the Lord said, time will prove where wisdom lies.

The Spirit of Truth

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth. His gifts enable us to understand created realities, their value, and their relationship to the Creator and to our happiness. We should ask the Holy Spirit to give us an understanding of the value of the human person. The Spirit enables us to cry out, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit Himself gives witness with our spirit that we are children of God.

Abortion, on the other hand, sees the human person as a disposable object. The Spirit of Truth likewise shows us the truth about our sins. In Him we come to understand the difference between good and evil. This works directly against the dynamics of the abortion movement, which identifies a moral evil as a “right.” “Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil.”

The Power of Testimony

The Christian Faith advances through testimony.  Jesus gives testimony to the Father; the Apostles give testimony to the Resurrection; Paul gives testimony to his conversion; Augustine gives testimony in his Confessions; you and I give and receive the testimony of how Jesus changes the lives He enters.  That is why the Silent No More Awareness Campaign is so powerful and necessary.  Men and women wounded by abortion and then healed are speaking out about the lie of abortion and the power of Jesus.  They are giving testimony to why life must be protected.  The power of their testimony is calling many to repentance and healing.  If you feel called to give a testimony about your abortion, or know someone else who does, contact us at silentnomoreawareness.org.

Using Images to Combat Rhetoric

Today I want to share with you the following e-mail I received from a pro-abortion person who visited the Priests for Life web site and saw the pictures of aborted babies. She wrote:

“I thought that you would like to know that you have changed the mind of at least one person with your web site, me.  Although I have never had an abortion myself, I have always thought that it should be a woman’s right to do what she wanted to her body.  Today I stand corrected.  Thank you for showing me the truth.  I will pray for success in your fight against abortion, and for all the children who die every day.”

Ignoring the Reality of Abortion

One of the best ways to see how to violate all the rules of logic is to examine the arguments – if you can call them arguments at all – of those who try to defend abortion. First of all, the last thing they want to talk about is the very thing they try to defend, namely, abortion.  They will talk about choice, freedom, the Constitution, the Church, women’s rights and sometimes, women’s health, but they won’t define or describe abortion itself.  The reason is simple: abortion cannot be defended.  As soon as it is described, or viewed, the human conscience objects to its obvious violence.

This is why one of the best things a defender of life can say to a defender of abortion is to ask, “Have you ever seen one?”

Changing Hearts and Minds

I received the following e-mail from someone who visited the Priests for Life web site and saw the pictures of aborted babies.  She wrote:

OH MY GOSH.  I just read your entire web page.  OH MY GOSH is all I can really say out loud.  I have seen articles and read about abortions before – but I still felt like it was the woman’s decision.  My mind was changed TODAY because of your web site.  I can’t tell you how much you touched me and turned me around in a full circle.  Thank you.  I will definitely share this message with other women I know.”

The Spirit of Life

In his Letter to the Romans, Paul writes, “If the spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, the one who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also.” The Spirit of Christ is the spirit of life, and to accept the call to follow Christ is to accept the call to welcome, nourish, defend, and celebrate life. We are the people of the One Who conquered death, and that is why we fight against the power of death as it manifests itself in evils like abortion. To stand with Christ is to stand with life, not to justify what takes life.

The Church’s pro-life work is not based on political ideology, but on the truths Christ has revealed to us.

Changing Hearts and Minds

Allow me to share with you today yet another email from someone who visited the Priests for Life website and saw the pictures of aborted babies. She wrote:

“To see all those innocent babies who didn’t even get to see the light of day except in pieces sickens and disgusts me. I once was pro-choice but now, I am definitely Pro Life because what is happening out there is nothing less than murder. All women should know the facts before even contemplating an abortion. I can’t understand why any one would perform one… I am 17 years old and to know this at this age, helps me prepare for the future and decisions I make.”

Join the Silent No More Awareness Campaign outside NARAL dinner

WASHINGTON, D.C. – All pro-lifers are urged to join the Northern Virginia, D.C. and Maryland chapters of the Silent No More Awareness Campaign this evening, Thursday, Jan. 26, outside the ballroom where NARAL will host its annual celebration of abortion.

Supporters of life will gather at 5:30 p.m. outside the Washington Hilton, 1919 Connecticut Avenue, NW, according to Nancy Tanner, Northern Virginia regional coordinator for Silent No More. They will remain in place until 7 p.m. and then will leave to have dinner and fellowship at a nearby restaurant. The Silent No More women and men and their supporters will return to the Hilton by 8:30 p.m. and will remain there until the NARAL event has concluded.

“It’s been pretty effective every year that we do this,” said Ms. Tanner. This is the seventh consecutive year she has organized the peaceful presence.

“We feel it’s important to have a presence when they’re celebrating, to show that there’s another side to this,” she said. “Many of us are hurt by abortion and regret that decision.”

Ms. Tanner will have signs on hand that say “I Regret My Abortion” or “I Regret My Lost Fatherhood,” as well as some that say “Women Do Regret Abortion” and “Men Regret Lost Fatherhood.”

At Monday’s March for Life, more than 50 women and men from the Silent No More Awareness Campaign shared their abortion testimonies in front of the U.S. Supreme Court. As they lined the streets with their signs awaiting their turn to speak, many were approached by marchers who thanked them for their courage, or whispered to them of their own regret.

“The pro-aborts in this country, like NARAL, say abortion is a good choice for women, but the women who have actually made that choice know better,” said Father Pavone, Pastoral Director of the Silent No More Awareness Campaign.

“One woman from Mississippi who shared her testimony said she wished she wasn’t standing on a cold, rainy street in Washington holding her sign. She wished she was home, with the 13-year-old she aborted,” Father Pavone said. “All the men and women of Silent No More feel that way.”

Since the launch of the Silent No More Awareness Campaign in 2003, 4,845 women and men have shared their testimonies publicly at over 865 gatherings in 48 states and 10 countries where more than 110,830 attendees have heard the truth about abortion’s negative aftereffects. More than 10,100 people representing 57 countries are registered to be Silent No More. Raising awareness about the hurtful aftermath of abortion and the help that is available to cope with the pain are two of the Campaign’s goals. The Campaign has over 1,300 testimonies posted here, with over 120 that are shared via video!

Let’s Encourage Societal Change Through Testimony

During these days many women who have had abortions are preparing to share their stories publicly at gatherings across America in observance of the anniversary of the legalization of abortion by Roe vs. Wade. They will share how their own despair deceived them into thinking abortion was the only option. They will speak about the pain and the fear, and the depths of darkness into which this so-called choice immersed them. They will speak of how abortion led to suicide attempts, drug abuse, divorce, and rebellious behavior. They will tell how it ripped families apart. Men will also share the suffering they experienced after abortion, and they will all share how Christ healed them. Let’s fight abortion by reading and spreading their testimonies to others.
