A new Pew Forum study found that in the news coverage of the elections of 2008, only one per cent of the news coverage was related to abortion issues. The study looked at over seventy-five hundred news stories from 48 news outlets, between June 1 to October 15.
This, of course, would explain part of the reason why many voters elected candidates without knowing where they stood on the abortion issue. The campaigns themselves, of course, also are reluctant to raise the topic, for fear that it will only inflame controversy.
It would be wrong, therefore, for any elected official to claim that the American people are calling in this election for fewer restrictions on abortion. If anything, Americans want far more restrictions on abortion, and in fact want it banned in most cases.
