“‘If you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.’ He said, ‘Which ones?’And Jesus answered, ‘You shall not kill…'” (Matthew 19:17-18).
Reflection: The prohibition of murder is mentioned first by Jesus when he refers to the commandments in answer to the rich young man’s question about how to reach eternal life. Taking one’s neighbor’s life is the most direct contradiction to the love of that neighbor and to the goods God wants to give, the foundation of which is life.
Prayer: Lord, all the good you give us depends on life. Bring an end to all killing, that we may each walk the path to life eternal. Amen.
