This reflection is taken from my book Pro-Life Reflections for Every Day, which is available for purchase at: ProLifeReflectionsForEveryDay.org.
“You may well ask: ‘Why direct action? Why sit-ins, marches and so forth? Isn’t negotiation a better path?’ … Indeed, this is the very purpose of direct action. … It seeks so to dramatize the issue that it can no longer be ignored (Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Letter from Birmingham Jail, April 1963).
Reflection: There are strong parallels between the Civil Rights Movement and the Pro-life Movement. One of them is that the powers with whom we must negotiate are often unwilling to even begin negotiating, or do not see the need. Peaceful protest is therefore required.
Prayer: Lord, may your people faithfully protest injustice and awaken those in power. Amen.
