The Church calls for an end to war and to the death penalty. But both can still be used under certain circumstances, and it is possible to support such use and still be pro-life.
The reason is that the death penalty and war are carried out precisely for the defense of innocent human life, when all other means fail. While abortion always destroys innocent life, that is not true regarding war and capital punishment. The justified use of war and capital punishment to defend life requires that great care is taken to avoid harming the innocent.
