Titusville, FL – Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, today said that this morning’s oral arguments in the Supreme Court case of NIFLA v. Becerra will present a stark contrast in one’s view of government.

“At issue here really is the core question: Can the government tell ordinary citizens what views they may espouse?” stated Fr. Pavone. “In NIFLA v. Becerra, the state of California is literally telling pro-lifers that if they want to help pregnant women find alternatives to abortion, they must first violate their own beliefs by telling women about the availability of abortion.”

The Supreme Court today will hear from lawyers representing the National Institute of Family and Life Advocates and the California attorney general’s office in a free speech challenge to a law requiring pro-life pregnancy resource centers to inform women that they may be eligible for free or low-cost abortions. The centers must also post a phone number where women can call for abortion information.

“The term ‘Orwellian’ is probably overused, but not in this case,” added Fr. Pavone. “California wants to force a viewpoint – that abortion must be promoted – on people who oppose that viewpoint. In effect, the free expression of ideas is to be replaced by a state-approved opinion. Such oppressive government action is exactly what the First Amendment is designed to prevent. Priests for Life stands with our fellow pro-lifers and all Americans in upholding free speech and opposing the view that government authorities may penalize those who disagree with their moral or political opinions.”

Priests for Life has issued a special prayer for victory in this case, found at www.SupremeCourtVictory.com.
