March 22, 2016
I know that each time I write you a letter that, in addition to taking an
important action to help bring us closer to victory over abortion, I also
ask you to make a donation to Priests for Life.
Believe me, I don’t like having to do that because I know I put a lot of
pressure on you when I do. Still, I have little choice in the matter.
As you know, Priests for Life receives no financial help from any official
Church entity. None. And this in spite of the fact that many at
the Vatican – including Pope Francis – as well as bishops around the world
and here in the United States strongly encourage us in our fight to end
That lack of financial support, however, means it’s up to you and the
Priests for Life family to fund our work. All of it. Which is
why I am constantly asking you for help. I do so for two reasons:
1.Because, as I just said, you and your fellow Priests for Life ministry
partners are the only source of funding for our work.
2.Because I never know when you’re able to help with a gift. Not
knowing, I ask all the time because, since you are one of our most loyal and
most generous supporters, I know you’ll help whenever you can.
All that said, we really need your help right now.
I’m asking you to prayerfully consider making a donation right now because
the financial situation here at Priests for Life has hit a crisis point; and
this in spite of my absolute best efforts to keep that from happening.
Please click here and make as large a contribution as you
possibly can. Even if you can only send $15 or $20, that will help.
I’m asking you to do this because fewer of your fellow Priests for Life
family members than usual have chosen to take part in the “90-Day Campaign”
that I asked you to join a couple weeks ago. In prior years our 90-Day
Lenten Campaigns have produced tremendous response and enabled Priests for
Life to carry out vital work, especially with state legislatures.
This year, however, the Campaign has hit a wall. While it began strong in
February, it’s now floundering. In March, donations were down over
$400,000 compared with the year before.
And while I can’t say for certain, I believe this sudden and totally
unexpected drop is due to the fact that many Priests for Life family members
have allowed the heated election campaigns to convince them that their
pro-life dollars are better spent helping a particular candidate win elected
office than they would be funding our work here at Priests for Life.
Of course, nothing could be further from the truth.
And I’m doing everything I can to reverse that mindset, including contacting
you and your fellow Priests for Life ministry partners and explaining why a
donation to Priests for Life is the best way to maximize their – and your –
In fact, that’s one of my main reasons for writing you this letter.
You see, Priests for Life has been encouraged by multiple seasoned veterans
of the political scene to spearhead a very important election-related
project. Now like you, I know that the resolution to the evil of abortion
will not come through politics alone. Still, those we elect to office
play a critical part in our work. They can help advance it – as we’re
seeing now with the pro-life House of Representatives. Or seriously
hinder it – as we’ve seen with other Congresses and by this Presidential
Therefore, Priests for Life is going to lead a “Catholic outreach” effort
- Train people in Catholic principles
- Produce a grassroots mobilization of voters
- Get people registered to vote
- Get people to the polls during “early
voting” days and on Election Day
- Generate maximum Catholic impact on the
When one very politically savvy leader came to me and urged me to take this
on, the point he made that convinced me to do this was this:
“You’re the only ones who can do this with the Catholics.”
He’s right. We are. We know this because of how successful our
Priests for Life efforts were in with the Catholic Outreach movement in 2000
Now we need to do it again.
So even as you read this urgent appeal for financial help, I’m putting the
finishing touches on that project and will be sending you full details in a
couple weeks or so. One thing I can tell you now is that a key part of
this effort will be the distribution of what we’re calling the “Voter Tool
Kit.” This kit will give priests, pro-life leaders and activists
specific instructions on what to do and how to do it to get folks involved
in election process.
Again, I’ll have more details for you in a couple of weeks.
What I need from you right now is a financial gift that will
allow Priests for Life to take on this monumental task.
I’m asking you to do this because the Supreme Court is in jeopardy.
Religious liberty in America literally hangs in the balance.
The results of the 2016 Election can tilt both in our direction.
But it will cost Priests for Life roughly $250,000 to conduct this massive
enterprise. Making matters worse for us, that $400,000 drop in “90-Day
Campaign” contributions that I told you about has created a snowball effect
that threatens to squash us. That’s because the lost income prevented
us from staying on top of bills that we incurred to carry out various and
sundry projects; for example, our nationwide work with state legislatures,
our highly effective pro-life parish mission trips, our Youth Outreach
ministry and our work with friends in Congress … and especially our effort
to give Senate Majority Leader McConnell the support he needs to HOLD FAST
and not confirm any of President Obama’s nominees to the Supreme Court.
And that’s just a few of the projects we’re carrying out right now.
So our back-debt spiked and it’s now upwards of $350,000. Paying off
that debt is holding us back from doing other important work, such as the
special election project we have committed to do.
The only way out of this Catch-22 is if you and the Priests for Life family
digs deep and overwhelms us with a tidal wave of generosity. Which is
what I’m counting on you to do today.
Can you help do that? Please.
Just click here and
do what you can.
If you can make a $50 donation that would be fantastic. If
all you can do is $25 right now, that’s fine, too. And if $15 is all
you can give today, then okay.
The bottom line is that you send something.
What we’re doing together with the Priests for Life family is too important
for me to have any qualms about coming to you with hat in hand as I am
today. We need your help and we need it today.
And with that I’ll close this brief but terribly important message. I
pray that I will hear from you today. Thank you and may God bless you.
