Dr. Alveda King in Port of Spain, Trinidad - March 2009

Dr. Alveda King travelled to the Caribbean nation of Trinidad and Tobago on March 27 at the invitation of the Emmanuel House Community.  Dr. King addressed a march for life and rally in Port of Spain, the capital city, warning pro-lifers of the Summit of the Americas Civil Society Forum to be held there in mid-April.

The Summit, a project of the Organization of American States, will bring together leaders from North and South America, including President Obama, to discuss issues such as "the promotion of women's human rights and gender equity."  Dr. King noted that such vaguely worded agendas are often used by international groups to pressure smaller, pro-life nations to liberalize their abortion laws. 

Dr. King urged pro-lifers on the island nation to remain "a strong voice for life in the world" and to keep Trinidad and Tobago "a city on the hill for taking a stand against abortion."

The weekend trip also included participation in an ecumenical pastors' breakfast where pro-life physician Dr. Heywood Robinson fielded questions from local clergy.  Dr. King was able to speak to Christians of all denominations over the course of her brief, but eventful trip, as well as Hindus and Moslems.
