Fr. Pavone: Collision course now assured; time to recommit

Priests for Life

November 07, 2012

STATEN ISLAND, NY – Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, issued the following statement about President Obama’s re-election:

“The  collision course of the Obama Administration with the Catholic Church could have been averted yesterday, but now it is assured instead.

"It is therefore time to recommit ourselves to the basics: a clear proclamation of the truth, an uncompromising fidelity to our principles, and an unwavering commitment to civil disobedience.

"Many in Church leadership failed to connect the dots between personnel and policy. They prayed and preached against the HHS mandate, but then were silent about the election, and called the police to remove citizens who leafleted the Church parking lot trying to inform voters about where the candidates stood on this issue.

"Meanwhile, the national pro-life groups have done outstanding work in this year's election, with initiatives, creativity, and energy as great as I have ever seen, and there is no doubt that the election results would have been far worse without that activity.

"The pro-life cause will prevail in America. In the elections of 2014, we will take back the Senate to further blunt the ability of President Obama to damage the cause of life.

"And in the meantime we will continue the cultural progress that is so clearly on the side of life, as more minds and hearts embrace the unborn, as more abortion mills close, and as more women and men speak up about how abortion harmed them.

"I invite all pro-life people to join me and other pro-life leaders tonight to discuss our next steps on a national pro-life webcast to take place from 9 to 10pm ET. Sign up at www.ElectionWebcast.org."

@Peter Shaw - there are also Democrats for Life - so if the majority of the Senate is filled with both Republicans and Democrats for Life - we do stand a good chance of turning the culture of death to life. Hence the reason why Fr. Pavone did not mention a party per se.

During the Winter of 2012, I was petitioning for Rick Santorum. I was told by the Deacon of Holy Innocents Church in Neptune New Jersey that "What I was doing was breaking law". My response was, "We have a man in the White House that has broken every constitutional law". He told me to stop and said "A buzzsaw is going to take place here and that the parishoners will have you arrested." I am sick and tired of the corruption within the Roman Catholic Church. There are many people that are strong Catholics that I know that voted for Obama and that completely turns my stomach. I have no love for anyone that are putting us thru this tryanny. As Catholics, Its about time we completely break our bond with the federal government....immediatly. I have decided to leave my parish in Neptune, NJ after the way I was treated and find a Catholic Church that best suits christianity and does not wave their beliefs for the Federal Government. I refuse to join hands with the Liberals and break bread with them. After all, they that are dismantling our society. Any Catholic for Barack Obama is a renegade of the faith.

I think Fr. Pavone and Marjore Dannesfelser have it spot on. The economy is one leg of the Reagan coalition 3-legged stool: Economic, Foreign Policy, and Social issues (Pro Life and Defending Marriage). Obama won because his campaign message defined abortion as rape, and Romney campaign was silent, letting this narrative peel off enough women voters from Romney. A robust Pro-Life response/arguement would have easily countered this, and made major in-roads into the single women and hispanic voting populations.

The economic issues can get you close, but all 3 planks for the Reagan coalition are needed to seal the deal. Unfortunately, the Romney campaign wanted no part of the Pro-Life issue. I pray that we learn from this and do not make the same mistake again!

I agree with your statement about Civil Disobedience.

What has happened at the abortion clinic protests is that we have been stigmatized into being more passive.

We need to enact an aggressive, yet non-violent approach to abortion clinics and Planned Parenthood. If we are willing to be arrested over and over again - like Ghandi - like MLK Jr then we will have earned our right to say to God that we did all we could.

We need training in "real" civil disobedience - leading to arrests en masse of pro lifers ... that is the only way to get attention now. The secular society votes abortion every year and therefore we cannot expect our politicians and the Democratic process to rid us of this evil.

We need to develop the same fervor of the Civil Rights Movement of the 60's and the AntiWar protesters of the same era albeit with much grayer hair.

After the horse runs out of the barn is when we started to pay attention to this. Let's hope we are not too late. BTW, there are many Catholic priests who told me they voted Democrat which saddened me.

@JASON, such stinging words or manner of type your post is. 'Your Jesus' you say. I assume Hes not yours?

So so sad people HATE w.the vengance that seems to show on some of these posts. I guess a war mongering Repub was just as bad as a Baby Killing, Pro Gay Marriage was. Absolute utter nonsence, the better pick for you is NONE? Sorry, no offense but that sounds of ignorance. Good Heavens, you actually believe Mitt Romney wanted to start wars? What a sad commentary on your cogency.

So TRAGIC............May I suggest a listen to Michael Voris at Church Militant.com The Video that speaks on the election. As well the clergys lack of PROPER INSTRUCT. I am sickened that I belong to a faith, although now I am back at my maternal Byzantine Catholic Church, and all is different there. Yet still Catholic, I actually could vomit out the 'evildoers' in our churchs.

The tragedy here in Carson City NV is that we were not able to pass out prolife information about the candidates at St. Theresa of Avila Catholic Church. The last time we tried to do this we were told to leave immediately. An hispanic priest in Reno actually told his congregation that the leaflets were "all lies!!"
The church in Carson City has a huge social justice committee and is all about "fair trade coffee." These priests and bishops who have abandoned the faith will be held accountable. Our God is a God of Mercy AND Justice.

Catholic bishops and priests washed their hands and left their sheeps. I don't understand why they are afraid to say something against devil. They are hipocrits!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The election was between a war mongering fascist Republikan and a baby killing communist Demokrat. I don't know how you so called "Christians" can go out and vote for either one of these evil doers and then sit on amen row on Sunday when the Bible clearly says to have NOTHING to do with evil doers. I don't remember your Jesus preaching endless warfare, baby killing, and gay union.
