NEW YORK – Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, today praised the House of Representatives for passing House Joint Resolution 43, which would allow states to direct federal family planning funds to organizations that do not provide abortions.
“It’s outrageous that the Obama administration issued a lame-duck rule that forces states to fund Planned Parenthood and other abortion businesses,” said Fr. Pavone. “This House vote to nullify that rule will restore to states their proper role in deciding which clinics and organizations are best suited to receive taxpayer funds.”
Last December, in what has been described as the Obama administration’s “parting gift to Planned Parenthood,” the Department of Health and Human Services issued a rule that forbids states from denying Title X family planning funds to entities that perform abortions. Acting under the Congressional Review Act, the House has now passed a resolution to void that rule. The resolution must now go to the Senate before reaching the President’s desk.
“An overwhelming percentage of Americans do not want their tax money to pay for abortions,” added Fr. Pavone. “This resolution would simply let states do what their voters want – give health care money to providers that help women, not kill their babies. I call on the Senate to move quickly in approving this resolution.”
