A Remarkable Woman - St. Catherine of Sienna

Fr. Walter J. Quinn, OSA

April 01, 1980

ST CATHERINE was the most remarkable woman of her time. She was born in

1347 & died in 380 AD in Rome..... at the early age of 33.  At first her Parents

wanted her  to marry, but they finally relented.    She entered Religious Life

.....at age 18.  She became  a Professed Religious Sister of the Dominican Order.

SHE WAS A NOTED Scholastic Philosopher & Theologian. She worked tirelessly

to bring the  Papacy back to Rome....from Avignon, FRANCE...where the Popes

resided since 1309 AD.

GREGORY XI was the 7th & last Pope living at Avignon. In 1776  he returned the

Papacy to Rome.   St Catherine was the one who PRIMARILY urged Gregory that

the Papacy belongs to....& should be IN ROME...the Holy See of Saint Peter the

 Apostle, the Vicar of Christ!

ST CATHERINE also worked to establish PEACE among the warring Italian City

States.  Thousands were converted to the Faith due to her Good Example during

the time of the Black Death when 75 to 200 Million people in EUROPE DIED

between 1346 & 1353 AD.  She has long been regarded as one of the finest

Theological minds in the Church. Pope Paul VI Solemnly proclaimed her a Doctor

 of the Church in 1970.

1.z

POPE PIUS II CANONIZED her a Saint in 1461 AD.  She is Venerated by the Catholic

Church...& is held in highest esteem by the Lutheran & Episcopal Communions.

She has been declared one of six Patron Saints of Europe.  The others:..Benedict

of Nursia, SS Cyril & Methodius...& Saint Bridget of Sweden....& Saint Benedicta

of the Cross....(St Edith Stein of Germany).

In 1375 SHE RECEIVED THE STIGMATA...the 5 wounds of Christ in her Hands, Feet

& Side.  These wounds became clearly visible after her death!

CATHERINE IS A GREAT SAINT....IN FACT EVERY SAINT IS “GREAT”

...SO PRAY TO THEM OFTEN FOR HELP AND GUIDANCE.

THEY SUCCEEDED.....THEY MADE IT....THEY GOT INTO HEAVEN.

THEY WILL LISTEN TO YOU....AND THEY WILL HELP YOU GET INTO HEAVEN TOO!
