Fr. Pavone Decries Michigan Governor’s Veto of “Choose Life” License Plate Bill

July 03, 2017

Staten Island, NY – Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, today criticized Michigan Governor Rick Snyder’s veto of a bill that would have allowed residents of the state to purchase “Choose Life” license plates.

“Governor Snyder says he vetoed a ‘Choose Life’ license plate bill because having such plates could ‘bitterly divide millions of Michiganders.’  And he doesn't think the veto is divisive? Moreover, by this standard, I can only conclude that he considers every other piece of legislation that he signs to be non-controversial,” said Fr. Pavone.

The Michigan legislature approved a measure that would have permitted drivers to pay $35 for a special “Choose Life” license plate.  Such plates are currently issued in over half of the nation’s states.  In his veto message, however, Governor Snyder called them “not appropriate.”

“Sadly, he makes the same mistakes too many clergy make, namely, considering 'Choose Life' to be a 'political' message rather than a fundamental statement of the values on which America, and civilization itself, are based," added Fr. Pavone.  “The 4th of July has come just in time for all of us, clergy and Governors alike, to revisit our founding principles."
