New York, NY—Priests for Life, an international ministry which assists clergy of all denominations to address the abortion issue, today announced the beginning of an ad campaign, challenging lawmakers, regardless of their religion, to responsibly represent all their constituents, including the unborn. The ads, which will be published this week in Roll Call and The Hill, include an open letter addressed to members of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives from Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life. (Fr. Pavone took this position in 1993 with the authorization of Cardinal John O'Connor.)

"Those who claim to be Christian face an irreconcilable contradiction when they embrace a "pro-choice" position, because abortion, as an act of violence, can never be compatible with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Those who also claim to be Catholic and pro-choice face a clear contradiction with the definitive teachings of the Catholic Church," says Fr. Frank Pavone in his letter. "The biggest possible mistake would be to overlook an entire segment of the public one professes to serve. After all, don’t all Americans, born and preborn, deserve equal protection under the law?"

The ads begin a national campaign to educate lawmakers, voters, and those running for elective office about their responsibility to protect the rights of the unborn. The message is not simply the result of religious beliefs, but of American ideals. As the United States bishops wrote in November of 1998, "As Americans, as Catholics and as pastors of our people, we write therefore today to call our fellow citizens back to our country’s founding principles, and most specifically to renew our national respect for the rights of those who are unborn, weak, disabled and terminally ill. Real freedom rests on the inviolability of every person as a child of God" (Living the Gospel of Life, #6)

In the next few months, Priests for Life will conduct a national education campaign on the abortion issue as it relates to the upcoming elections, making it clear to voters that the right to life is the most fundamental issue in any campaign. The organization’s message, from coast to coast, will reflect fully the teachings which the United States Catholic Bishops enunciated in their November 1998 document, Living the Gospel of Life: A Challenge to American Catholics, and in their 1999 statement, Faithful Citizenship: Civic Responsibility for a New Millennium (USCC Administrative Board).
