MLK Niece: 'Planned Parenthood Lying about Uncle'

Dr. Alveda King, niece of slain civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., has raised objections to Planned Parenthood's King Day press release linking her uncle to the pro-choice movement.

The release came 44 years after the fallen leader reportedly received an award from the organization recognizing "individuals' excellence and leadership in furthering reproductive health and rights."

Alveda King, pastorial associate of Priests for Life, accused Planned Parenthood of using the award to suggest her uncle was a supporter of abortion rights.

"Every year they lie," King said. "My uncle stood for equal protection and non-violence - two concepts that Planned Parenthood violates every day by being the nation's largest abortion business."

"Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. did not attend the event where his award was presented," she added. "We don't even know if he wrote the words of the acceptance speech that was read at the banquet."

King further charged that the organization's portrayal of abortion as a safe procedure is dangerous and misleading.

"Abortion is linked to breast and cervical cancer and so many other health problems," she said.

National Director of Priests for Life Fr. Frank Pavone suggested this isn't the first time the organization has lied, citing evidence they've been less than honest with women on the issue of abortion.

"Videotape reveals that Planned Parenthood doesn't tell the truth to women and doesn't tell legal authorities about possible criminal activity," Fr. Pavone said. "Its implied claims about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. are just more of Planned Parenthood's stock in trade -- deceit."
