Staten Island, NY – Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, today criticized Democratic members of the Senate Finance Committee who boycotted the markup session to confirm Congressman Tom Price as Secretary of Health and Human Services.

“If the pro-abortion Democrats on the Senate Finance Committee want to boycott meetings rather than work, they should just resign.  The Senate and the country would be better off without them,” said Fr. Pavone.  “It’s one thing to be upset about losing an election, it’s another to refuse to carry out your duty to the country.  Senate Democrats need to start acting like adults and fulfill their responsibilities to the American people.”

The Senate Finance Committee, as had been previously announced, was scheduled to vote on the nomination of Congressman Tom Price today.  In a surprise move, no Democrats showed up at the committee meeting this morning, thereby preventing a vote on the Health and Human Services nominee.  Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch expressed dismay at the boycott and said he would announce a new date for a confirmation vote.

“Committee Chairman Hatch said that the Democrats’ boycott of the hearing was ‘the most pathetic treatment [of Presidential nominees] I’ve seen in my 40 years in the Senate,’ added Fr. Pavone.  "It’s clear that these committee members are more concerned about doing the will of the abortion lobby than doing the will of the people.”

The Price confirmation is of particular significance to Priests for Life due to the fact that we have a federal lawsuit still pending against the HHS mandate which would attempt to force us to violate our faith by cooperating in making abortion available in the health insurance plans we offer our employees.
