NEW YORK – Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, today applauded the Senate’s vote to confirm Congressman Tom Price as Secretary of Health and Human Services.
“Secretary Price’s confirmation represents a new day for religious liberty,” said Fr. Pavone. “After five years of court battles which have taken Priests for Life to the Supreme Court and back, we have battled the department of HHS and its former Secretary. Now, as we welcome Secretary Price, we welcome new hope that the threats the HHS mandate poses to religious freedom will soon be a thing of the past.”
In February 2012, Priests for Life filed one of the first lawsuits against the HHS mandate, an administrative rule devised by bureaucrats in Department of Health and Human Services. The mandate has gone through revisions over the years, but each one has required religious non-profit groups such as Priests for Life to violate their faith by being complicit in the provision of abortion causing drugs and devices to their employees.
“We fought the HHS mandate all the way to the Supreme Court and we continue to fight it to this day,” added Fr. Pavone. “The government has no business telling Priests for Life or any other religious organization how or when we can practice our faith. Thank God, we now have a President and an HHS Secretary who understand that.”
