NEW YORK -- Alveda C. King, director of Civil Rights for the Unborn for Priests for Life, will be honored with the NRB Chairman’s Award on Thursday at Proclaim 17, the National Religious Broadcasters convention in Orlando, Florida.
“As Chairman, I can think of no other person so worthy of the Chairman’s Award than Alveda King,” said NRB Chairman of the Board Bill Blount. “In a year that has seen significant racial unrest, she has been a clear voice to America to return to biblical values, which will strengthen families and communities, and bring hope and reconciliation to our country.”
In a statement
, NRB said Ms. King, the niece of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, was selected for her “lifetime accomplishments in addressing the moral and spiritual needs of the nation in an exemplary manner.” The Rev. Billy Graham is a past recipient of the Chairman’s Award.
“I am so honored and grateful to be receiving this prestigious award,” Ms. King said. “I have tried through my life and work to honor God and stand up for what I believe in, beginning with the right to life for all human beings. This award tells me that, with God’s help, I am on the right track.”
Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, will attend the awards ceremony with Janet Morana, Executive Director.
“When Alveda King and I first met, we both recognized that the pro-life movement is the civil rights movement of the 21st century,” Father Pavone said. “And then we realized we needed to combine forces, and she devoted herself full time to the pro-life effort as a member of the Priests for Life team. It is an honor to work side by side with her as we move closer to our goal of abolishing abortion in our lifetime.”
Mrs. Morana concurred.
“It was a blessing when she brought her ministry to Priests for Life,” she said. “Alveda helped us expand our pro-life outreach to the African-American and evangelical Christian communities.”
Also on Thursday, Ms. King will be honored with the Legacy and Leadership Award from Bott Radio Network. That award will be bestowed during a Bott Radio Network breakfast at NRB.
