Fr. Pavone Applauds Senate Vote to Rescind Obama Regulation that Forces States to Fund Abortion

NEW YORK – Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, today praised the Senate for passing a resolution that would once again allow states to direct federal family planning funds to organizations that do not provide abortions.

“The Obama administration did everything it could to promote and subsidize abortion, including forcing states to give family planning money to abortionists,” said Fr. Pavone.  “This action by Congress restores to states the right to send taxpayer money where it’s supposed to go – to clinics that don’t perform abortions.”

The Senate’s approval of House Joint Resolution 43, together with House passage of the measure in February, completes Congressional action on the rescission of a lame duck regulation issued by the Obama administration last December.  That rule required states to send taxpayer money to Planned Parenthood and other abortion groups through the Title X family planning program.  The resolution now goes to President Donald Trump for signature.

“Abortion is not family planning, it’s family elimination,” added Fr. Pavone.  “If states wish to send family planning money to organizations that don’t perform abortions, they should be free to do so.  I am confident that President Trump will sign this resolution into law so that states will once again be free to abide by their citizens’ wishes to not use public funds to support abortion.”
