NEW YORK – Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, today praised the Senate vote to apply the Reid Rule to Supreme Court nominations, thereby allowing high court nominees to be approved by a majority vote.
“This is not a nuclear option, it’s a no-brainer. This is common sense and I’m happy to see the GOP acting like the winners they are. If the Republicans hadn’t applied the Reid Rule to Supreme Court appointments, we can be sure that the Democrats would have done so the next time such a move would benefit them,” said Fr. Pavone. “The only reason the pro-abortion leadership of the Democrat-controlled Senate didn’t do away with filibusters for high court nominees in prior years is because Republicans didn’t filibuster President Obama’s picks.
“It can’t be stated often enough, the American people voted to have President Trump name the next Supreme Court nominee and to have a Republican Senate confirm that jurist,” added Fr. Pavone. “The Senate’s approval of Judge Neil Gorsuch will restore the Supreme Court to a full bench and end the abortion radicals’ attempted end run around last year’s election results.”
In 2013, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid changed the chamber’s rules so that lower federal court and executive branch appointees could be confirmed by majority votes rather than by super-majority votes of 60 Senators. Using that alteration as a precedent, current Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has extended the Reid Rule to Supreme Court nominations.
