Staten Island, NY – Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, issued the following statement today regarding the just-revealed death of a Southwest Women’s Options abortion clinic patient in New Mexico.
"The abortion of a child never helps the mother, and sometimes kills her. We mourn the untimely and unnecessary death of 23-year old Keisha Atkins and her baby. We ask God's mercy for her and his consolation for her family.
"The abortion mill that killed her is the same one we've been exposing through undercover phone calls (PriestsForLife.org/LateTermAbortion); the work of exposing these killing centers and the harm they do to children and their families has only begun.
"The New Mexico Attorney General’s Office is already investigating Southwest Women’s Options after Congress found the clinic to be violating the law. The death of Keisha, who had an incomplete late-term abortion at the Albuquerque business, only heightens the need to find out exactly what is going on there. New Mexico’s State Medical Board needs to join with the Attorney General’s Office in investigating this notorious clinic. That investigation should include the practices of its 80-year-old abortionist.
"When I lead prayers in front of abortion facilities nationwide, I read aloud a long list of mothers killed by abortion (http://priestsforlife.org/womenkilled). Now, sadly, Keisha's name will be added to that list. We will not forget her and will make sure that people on both sides of the abortion debate don't forget her either."
An autopsy report obtained by Abortion Free New Mexico shows that Keisha Marie Atkins, 23, died in February after undergoing a four-day abortion procedure at the Southwest Women’s Options clinic. Ms. Atkins passed away at the University of New Mexico Hospital after doctors there completed the abortion begun at SWO. It’s not clear how Ms. Atkins arrived at the hospital as records indicate that an ambulance request made by SWO was cancelled.
