Defending Life and The Catholic View for Women will kick off new seasons this week on EWTN, with new days, new times, and for The Catholic View, a new co-host.
In the season-opening episode, new co-host Elena Rodriguez, an EWTN radio producer, will introduce herself and join veterans Janet Morana, executive director of Priests for Life, and Catholic author, journalist and host of EWTN’s “The Catholic Connection” radio show Teresa Tomeo, to share their backgrounds and personal faith journeys.
Future episodes will focus on women in the new evangelization; one family’s efforts at radical evangelization in Costa Rica, and Olympic athletes who hold on to their Catholic faith.
Commenting on her new role, Ms. Rodriguez said: “I am honored and delighted to join Teresa Tomeo and Janet Morana. It is a great responsibility that comes with even greater blessings. Among those blessings is the chance to share with our sisters and brothers watching the show and addressing topics we seldom hear anywhere else.
“This season I pray and hope that – together – we can unite with our viewers and encourage one another to raise the bar in the way we live our faith and show our love for our neighbors, following in the footsteps of our Most Blessed Mother, who truly brings us a ‘Catholic view’ for women.”
Ms. Rodriguez replaces Astrid Bennett Gutierrez, who has launched a Spanish-language show for women on EWTN Espanol.
“We are so happy to have Elena join us,” Mrs. Morana said. “We have known and worked with her for years and I know viewers will appreciate the perspective she brings to the show.”
The Catholic View will air on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. ET; Saturdays at 3:30 a.m. ET and Sundays at 11:30 p.m.
Priests for Life’s Defending Life, the longest-running, farthest-reaching show on television devoted solely to the topic of abortion, will have its season 32 premiere at 11 p.m. Friday. Mrs. Morana and Father Stephen Imbarrato will return as hosts.
The first episode will be devoted to the memory of Norma McCorvey, also known as Jane Roe of 1973’s Roe v. Wade decision. Norma, who died in February, came to regret allowing herself to be used by the pro-abortion forces in the early 1970s and became a pro-life activist and a Christian. She credits Father Frank Pavone, national director of Priests for Life, with being the catalyst that ultimately brought her into the Catholic Church.
Viewers will learn of her incredible journey, which was closely intertwined with the work of Priests for Life, and learn some little-known facts about the feisty Texas woman whose most fervent hope was to see an end to abortion in her lifetime.
Also this season, viewers will find out how the Founding Fathers envisioned the role of the Supreme Court and how the Court has veered from that vision; the importance of a pro-life presence outside abortion businesses; how one man’s brutal honesty about his abortion experiences led to healing for his whole family, and the impressive progress of the pro-life movement.
“There is no aspect of the pro-life movement that has not been covered by Defending Life,” said Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life and creator of the show. “The program has served -- and continues to serve -- the entire pro-life movement by highlighting the works and resources, the strategies and successes, of countless pro-life organizations big and small.”
Father Stephen Imbarrato said he is looking forward to having viewers tune in to another season.
“This show gives us a platform to keep everyone informed about what’s happening in our fight to end pre-born child killing,” he said. “Since this is everyone’s fight, we also will make sure people know how they can get involved.”
