What if abortion is not a personal decision between a woman, her family and her doctor?
What if abortion’s aftermath is so devastating that it affects our entire society?
In Shockwaves: Abortion’s Wider Circle of Victims, author Janet Morana proves beyond a doubt that 45 years of legal abortion have left the United States a wounded nation, with families torn apart, men and women alienated from each other and a death toll at 59 million and growing.
Published this month by Catholic Book Publishing, Shockwaves is the outgrowth of an initiative launched in 2015 by the Silent No More Awareness Campaign, which Mrs. Morana, executive director of Priests for Life, founded with Anglicans for Life President Georgette Forney.
Healing the Shockwaves of Abortion -- and the Shockwaves book -- is an outreach whose aim is to offer educational and healing resources to those whose lives have been shattered: Mothers and fathers who made the irrevocable choice to abort their children and were ill-prepared to deal with the unexpected emotional fallout; grandparents, siblings and extended families who experienced a generational upheaval when a single person was violently torn from the family tree, and pro-life advocates who pour their lives into trying to save unborn babies in a culture that considers children in the womb to be nothing more than parasites.
Shockwaves clearly illustrates how even abortion business workers and abortionists themselves have been dehumanized by their complicity in the lucrative, inhumane industry. Even they are in need of healing, and worthy of forgiveness.
“No one who is involved in the death of a child in the womb, even tangentially, is untouched,” said Mrs. Morana. “Abortion rates are declining and we are making progress toward abolishing abortion, but the fact remains that this nation has been wounded in myriad ways. Before we can take steps to heal our collective conscience, we need to recognize what the ‘right to choose’ has done to all of us.”
The book combines scholarly research and personal observations culled from Mrs. Morana’s nearly 30 years in pro-life work. Most devastating are the testimonies of those who are among the wounded, including former abortionists, sibling survivors and front-line pro-life activists who rely on prayer and fellowship to gird themselves for this life-and death battle waged daily.
“This book vividly sets forth how an abortion that requires a relatively short amount of time is the epicenter of a deadly earthquake whose aftershocks spread far throughout the lives of the mothers, fathers, families and the whole of society,” EWTN’s Father Mitch Pacwa, S.J., wrote in his endorsement for Shockwaves.
“This compassionate acknowledgment of the extent of abortion grief will be an invaluable resource for healing,” wrote Maria McFadden Maffucci, editor of Human Life Review.
Mrs. Morana’s first book, Recall Abortion: Ending the Abortion Industry’s Exploitation of Women (Saint Benedict Press, 2013), ably demonstrated that abortion is a harmful product that should be pulled from the market.
Shockwaves, a perfect complement to Recall, highlights the heartbreaking ramifications of allowing our notion of equal rights for women to require the sacrifice of our children.
