Resolution on Human Life Foundation
A Statement
Issued by the National Conference of Catholic Bishops
November 20, 1975
1. Just over six years ago, the Human Life Foundation was established
to encourage scientific research in natural family planning, and to promote
educational efforts that would enable married couples to use responsibly
those natural methods of family planning "whose safeness has been proven and
whose harmony with the moral order has been ascertained (Constitution on
the Church in the Modern World, #87). The foundation was the first of
its kind in the entire world, and has played a major role in generating
international interest and worldwide scientific research.
2. The National Conference of Catholic Bishops takes this occasion to
recognize with approval and appreciation the dedicated work of the board of
directors, the advisory committees, and the staff of the Human Life
Foundation. We realize that those associated with the foundation have made
generous sacrifices of time, energy, and personal interest to pursue the
goals of the foundation, and we recognize the significant achievements that
have resulted.
3. The work of the foundation is far from complete, and the
accomplishments of the past generate a new spirit of confidence and a
renewal of hope for future activities.
4. In recognition and appreciation of the work of the foundation, we
pledge our continued support, encouragement, and collaboration to insure
that the work so effectively begun will continue and lead to more successful
achievements in the years ahead. The work of the Human Life Foundation, in
which we are proud to have a part, will considerably advance the welfare of
marriage and the family, by leading those who are skilled in the
sciences—notably the medical, biological, social, and psychological—to pool
their efforts in perfecting the natural methods of family planning so as to
explain more thoroughly the various conditions favoring a proper regulation
of births (cf., Constitution on the Church in the Modern World, #52).
