PALM SUNDAY 1998

Sunday, April 5

The Holy Father celebrated Palm Sunday Mass in St. Peter's Square at 10am Rome time today. The Square was filled with people from every continent holding palm branches as did the disciples and crowds in Jerusalem (see photo 1 and photo 2).

This marked the 13th World Youth Day. The Holy Father explained that Palm Sunday has taken on this special significance not only because young people greeted the Lord with palms on the first Palm Sunday, but because the message of the cross is addressed in a particular way to the young as they are called to bear witness to their generation that the cross provides the one hope of the human family. "Ave Crux, spes unica!" the Holy Father cried out as the youth from around the world applauded. "Hail, O Cross, our only Hope!"

At the conclusion of the mass, the special cross, which has traveled throughout the world to the special Youth Days held in various cities, was passed on from a group of young people from France, where last year's World Youth Day with the Pope was held, to a group of young people from Italy, where the next World Youth Day with the Pope will be held in the year 2000.
