Fr. Frank Pavone of Priests for Life Praises Ohio Legislature's
Passage of a Ban on So-called Wrongful Life Lawsuits
<>"The Ohio
legislature has made a profound statement: it is never wrongful that a baby is
born," states Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life. "No
matter the disability involved, no matter the hardship in caring for a helpless
child, grace, beauty, and love increase when God creates another baby.
Birth should be a cause of joy, never a cause of action."
<>Fr. Pavone's words
come in response to the Ohio state assembly's agreement with the state senate on
a bill to bar what are called wrongful life or wrongful birth lawsuits.
Such cases claim that had a physician diagnosed a disability in a child before
birth, the parents of that child would have aborted the baby. Under this
reasoning, the child's birth is considered "wrongful" and parents should not
have to incur the costs of caring for their offspring. "The disabled are
like everyone else," concludes Fr. Pavone, "they're better off loved, not better
off dead."
