Dr.
Alveda King Says Hilton and Wilson Cases Linked by a ‘Consequence-Free’ Mindset
Washington, DC – Dr. Alveda King,
Pastoral Associate of Priests for Life, today commented on an issue raised by
the criminal cases of Genarlow Wilson, a man sentenced to ten years of prison at
the age of 17 for having criminal consensual sex with a 15-year-old girl, and
socialite Paris Hilton.
“On the surface, there’s nothing
similar about the cases of Genarlow Wilson and Paris Hilton,” said Dr. King,
niece of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “One would be hard pressed
to immediately see a link between the two and I wouldn’t presume to comment on
the details or merits of either person’s situation, but from a distance, they
seem to be examples of an attitude that’s at the root of many of society’s
problems. Too many of us feel we can do what we know is wrong and not have
to face the consequences of our actions.”
“I believe that a generation’s
having grown up with legal abortion is a big reason for the consequence-free
mindset that plagues our young; after all, if a culture says you can kill a baby
to ‘fix’ unwanted pregnancy, how serious could it be to deal with other problems
you cause? We need to pray for our children. We need to monitor the
media they absorb. And we need to teach them – if you want to avoid the
rude awakening of painful consequences, don’t do what’s ‘right for you,’ do
what’s right.”
